If we’re gonna shit on 2005 movies…

— White Noise. Was supposed to be Michael Keaton’s comeback (9 years before Birdman) but was a “Fuck You, It’s January” release.

— Elektra. It’s a trigger word for SnoBorderZero.

— Hide & Seek. Ready for a horror movie starring ‘Meet the Parents’ era Robert De Niro?

— Constantine. That time between Matrix and John Wick when Keanu Reeves went back to being a punchline.

— Crash. Racism in America. From the point of view of a rich white Scientologist.

2005 was a bad year for movies. Scrolling through titles on Letterboxd, it's gotta be the weakest of the last 20 years sans 2020.

And even then an argument could be made 2020 was better.

I don’t quite recall “the twist”, but I remember that De Niro phoned it in.






Sno is tripping. 2005 was a great year to be a youth at the movies.

— Hitch was a great date movie.

— It sounds crazy to say in 2024, but Sin City was a legitimately beloved movie in 2005. It was even #1 in Dracula’s Top 10 list:

— Unleashed / Danny the Dog, Jet Li’s best non-Asian film?

— Revenge of the Sith, the cinematic event of the year.

— Batman Begins!

— Audiences hated War of the Worlds, but I loved it. I was an early defender.

— On the flip side, Fantastic Four and Burton’s Willy Wonka have questionable quality, but those were fun “let’s hang out at the mall and catch a movie afterwards” experiences.

— Wedding Crashers!

— Michael Bay’s The Island was a fun Saturday night crowd movie.

— The 40-Year-Old Virgin!

— Corpse Bride was a good Hot Topic crowd movie.

— I’ll die on this hill, but Chicken Little was great.

— Jarhead!

— Zathura is no Jumanji. Doomsday tells Jon Favreau that every chance he gets. But it is a shockingly decent movie.

— I don’t care about Harry Potter, but a young PhantomKnight had the time of his life.

— I didn’t care for Narnia, but a lot of people loved that movie. It was like the opposite experience of War of the Worlds for me. No doubt PhantomKnight loved this movie too.

— King Kong was a giant disappointment, but it wasn’t a bad moviegoing experience. As stated above, it’s a decent “let’s hang out at the mall and catch a movie later” type thing.

Dude, I pretty much disliked Narnia from the start.

Debatable.

The Passion of the Christ is still one of the wildest moviegoing experiences I’ve ever had. Doomsday can vouch for that.

Secret Window is one of the funniest “horror movies” ever. It’s one thing to watch a crappy B-movie and laugh at it. It’s another to witness a “real movie” with Johnny Depp at the height of his fame that didn’t know it was a comedy.

Shrek 2 was a cultural event.

Prisoner of Azkaban is the best Harry Potter.

Napoleon Dynamite became a cultural phenomenon. I still have a Vote for Pedro t-shirt somewhere in my closet.

I fucking loved the Terminal, but I know I’m alone on that one.

Spider-Man 2! That train scene still lives rent free in my head.

Anchorman.

The Bourne Supremacy.

Collateral.

I hated the Grudge, but people ate it up.

Sideways was amazing.

That Birth movie with Nicole Kidman was like watching a train wreck.

The Incredibles!

I’m not gonna defend it in 2024, but I did enjoy After the Sunset with Pierce Brosnan. Sorry SnoBorderZero.

Finding Neverland.

Prince Caspien was good.

Your acknowledgment that it’s the only good Harry Potter movie?

Wait, what? PK doesn't like Azkaban?

Not the filmmakers faults but the kids are still pretty awful at acting on this one. Improves dramatically afterwards but just nature of their ages I'm thinking.
