My Thanksgivings generally consist of three days of whirlwind travel, stupid amounts of food and wine, and 30-40 talkative Italian relatives. Shopping is the last thing on our minds.
Wouldn't trade it for anything.

Management typically worked ten hour shifts by default. He would still get home in the afternoon and have the rest of the day to relax and enjoy Thanksgiving. I don't shop on Thanksgiving (or Black Friday), but I have gone to the movies. I've never been to the movie theaters on Thanksgiving. I don't know a single person who has. I don't think they're even open. But I have been to the movie theaters on "Black Friday" and it's usually packed. In fact, the mall in general is crowded on Black Friday. The media always focuses on retail stores but the mall, arguably, gets more activity because there's more to do and more stuff to buy.

Except that you're suggesting that I should just expect dinner to be easy when I get home. I'm the one that generally makes a majority of the food, including the turkey, and we have no family in the area, so its not like I can defer it to them either. Sure, I can sit back and enjoy some of the day, but there is no time for the traditional gluttonous feast.

Black Friday is reserved for stingy, aggressive, glutenous consumers who have no sense of decency. And Thanksgiving is the day we celebrate giving the Native-Americans smallpox.
There. I met my "cynical asshole quota" for the day.

Yeah well our Thanksgiving celebrations have been a tradition for 66 years and reminds us the of struggle my Italian immigrant great-grandparents had to over come in their effort to embrace this new way of life and while keeping their homegrown traditions alive with in the family. I like to appreciate it for what it is verus what it was.
There. I've met my "raging bitch" quota for the day.

I'm the one that generally makes a majority of the food. I didn't know that. Sorry. NE....Are you actually trying to say working Thanksgiving is not a big inconvenience? ...No? I'm saying that 6am is better than 6pm. In Frizzo's case, it doesn't matter, because he's the one that cooks. But for other people, working in the morning is better than in the nighttime. You can at least have a proper Thanksgiving dinner. And for the record, I have worked on Thanksgiving. It just wasn't retail. I know people focus on retail because of all the Black Friday stuff, but other people work too. Food shelters are open. Restaurants are open. Toll booths are open. Police stations are open. Prisons still need security. Other important places need security. TV stations are open. Radio stations are open. The list goes on. Our Thanksgiving celebrations have been a tradition for 66 years and reminds us the of struggle my Italian immigrant great-grandparents had to over come in their effort to embrace this new way of life and while keeping their homegrown traditions alive with in the family. Same here. Except my family came over in the 80's from the Caribbean. I still laugh how my family didn't fully understand Thanksgiving until like the mid-90's.

For the first time in my life I have a job that gives me holidays off, so I'll be looking at everything in a brand new light this winter. I actually have a full week off at Christmas.

4 miles in 30 minutes...I know I can do better.
As for the whole Thanksgiving and working deal...I know plenty of people who can say they can't remember a time they weren't working or even home for the Holidays.

I have to work the day after Thanksgiving (not retail though). It can make travel interesting since the nearest family is still 2 hours away. But it wasn't that long ago that I didn't get holidays off, so I definitely will not complain.

I'm pretty sure I've had the same thought process the last 5 years, but I'd honestly rather work Thanksgiving and Black Friday than deal with my boyfriend's parents. His mother is just bonkers. I have to shut my mouth and nod while she talks about how many times her life was threatened at work (Leavenworth's public library is apparently a meet up point for ISIS based on the stories she tells) and how terrible she has it being half cherokee and how awful white people are and blah blah blah. You know who else is half cherokee but didn't turn it into a pity party? CHER!

I am insanely jealous. I may eventually get the opportunity to go to Japan. One of our vendors is based in Hiroshima, so I could go on a vacation and pretend it's mostly for business. My parents have both visited and they enjoyed the trip.

Assholes need to stop taking up two seats on the train. Your boys don't deserve any more room than mine.

So my plans are finally coming together for my trip to Japan next year. March to be exact. Nice!! Me and the wifey were planning Japan for 2016, but we got suckered into buying a time share. Well, not really, it made sense with our plans to travel at least once per year, and we get a free trip to Hawaii out of it. The sad part is that even though Japan was in the options book, Tokyo wasn't, which is where we mainly wanted to go, and we pretty much invested our next 3 years vacation money in the time share. No problem, Kyoto will do, as will Vietnam. Have fun and post pics when you get back. BTW, what part of Japan you heading to?

Subway courtesy in Toronto is beyond terrible. When my wife was very pregnant, she was rarely offered a seat. And not to mention the stupid kids wearing their backpacks, smacking into everything and everyone. I'm so glad I drive.

I'm still alive and kicking after my cup of Death Wish Coffee - so I had 2 cups this morning What was it like? It was like coffee. lol I drink a lot of coffee anyway so hard to distinguish much of a difference. It wasn't exceptionally tasty, it was pretty normal tasting, and for me, not really buzzy like drinking a whole pot of coffee, but it does wake you up - I'd probably buy it now and again. What I want to try next is Kopi Luwak - to see if there is really a difference and also just to say I've tried the most expensive coffee in the world

They do that because they want to discourage people from sitting next to them, especially if those people may or may not be crazy. It's a pretty standard urban survival skill. If you politely ask for the seat they will most likely move their bags.
