I deleted the first post in this thread thinking it would delete the thread, but now Dracula has the first post even though the thread was created by me. Strange.
Anyway, I've been recently torrenting 1080p episodes of this show. The reason I stopped watching is because what I had downloaded was just absolutely terrible quality, to the point that I couldn't even really watch it. I feel like I'm cheating a little because the 1080p copies are obviously 16x9 and that's not really what the show's creator intended for the viewer to see; even now, with the rise of Blu-ray and HD video, he stands by the 4x3 original airings. But, oh well.
I'm hoping to get back into it in the next few days.

This is a show I've been dying to watch but can't bring myself to sacrifice all my Netflix disc space just for this show, because I'd want to run through all 5 seasons consecutively. I'll probably end up doing what you are Torn once I finish "True Detective" because this is a show I need to see.

Yeah, I feel the same way. Its legacy still lives on to today and seems like it's always in that arena of 'best show ever.' Seems like it deserves my time.

Yeah, I knew it was legit when my friend who only watches movies and never television was raving about "The Wire" and that it's the best show he's ever seen. He's a tough person to elicit that type of response from, so the show must be awesome. I've seen the first two episodes and really, really liked them, but sadly since I don't have HBO those are the only two I've seen. Something like "True Detective" is only 3 discs to watch the first season, so I don't mind, but for "The Wire" and "Rome" I'm gonna have to go a different route to finally watch them in their entirety.

Amazon Prime Student Membership?
It is great... but I doubt I could watch it all again. The Female has been bugging to watch though, so maybe.

Are you asking SnoBorder?
I've been out of college too long for that.

I don't have anything Amazon other than a regular account, and I graduated college in 2012. If it's free for a month I'd do it and binge like crazy.

Amazon Prime membership is worth the price tag for streaming alone. They have a bunch of HBO shows available. I just watched the first episode of The Wire over the weekend. I've been hearing how great it is for a long time and I figured I'd give it a shot. I look forward to the next chance I get to watch. It's pretty good.

Does anybody have both Amazon Prime and Netflix? Which do they prefer? While I don't like the up-front cost of Prime, it's cheaper in the long run and I like the free shipping offered too. Maybe I'll make a switch after Netflix's Daredevil series is released.

Both here. HboGo as well.
I like Prime for certain things, Hannibal is nice to have, and their original content is becoming strong. I watch both, not regularly though, and Primes UI is absolutely awful, I have a feeling there are a lot of gems in there, but it is so hard to navigate. I got it for the free two day shipping primarily though. Gave my dad my password, and he watches Prime like it is his job.

It's hard to pick which is best. There is a lot of overlap between streaming services, but each has their own exclusives that make them worth having. Amazon prime has a lot of older HBO content and they have a lot of comedy central shows. Netflix has some cartoon network and adult swim shows that none of the other services have.
Between all the streaming services I subscribe to I don't even miss having cable (though the fact that I have access to my brother's DVR and HBO Go helps)

Really need to put a week aside to watch this, and The Sopranos. Not enough hours in a day.
If you could choose one or the other, which would people go for?

I liked The Wire a lot back then, but it hasn't really stayed with me much, honestly.

OK, I am watching through the series for the first time. I am going to watch the season 2 finale tonight. Solid show but nowhere near as good as people have been making it out.
Season 1 - 7/10 Season 2 - 6/10 - haven't seen the finale yet so score might change on this one.
Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire are both better shows imo. That opinion might change by the time I get done with the show but doubtful.

I've just started the show (better late than never) as well. I'm only 5 episodes in, and I've enjoyed it so far though not blown away. But it's very well written and interesting stuff, I'm excited to run through this show and see what all the hype is about.

I'm just about to start season 5 of my rewatch. one thing that struck me this time about season 4 is how good the kid's performances are. Even the secondary kids like Donut feel authentic.

Finished Season 2. I stand by my 6/10 score for it.
On Episode 4 of Season 3 now, feels much more like Season 1, more enjoyable.

Season 2 is better on a rewatch, but I remember feeling the port story was a distraction the first time as well. I really like the character of Frank Sobatka though.

Well finally finished The Wire. Not bad. Overall I give it a 7.5/10. It had a pretty solid finale too. Shows like this tend to try to force a happy ending on you but this one felt natural.
I would recommend this to anyone who hasn't sat down to it yet. Season 2 drags some but it picks back up and is worth the time for a good binge watch.
