Night and Fog - Yeah it's only like 20 minutes long, but it may also be the greatest documentary ever made. Disturbing and entrancing. We haven't been including documentaries. I'm not really feeling All that Heaven Allows. It's influence seems to mostly be on Ali: Fear Eats the Soul and Far From Heaven, two films we didn't even consider as important for their respective years.

I guess I won't argue with Marty. You're gonna open a can of worms by saying that.

Rebel without a cause for sure. I'd say it and Night of the Hunter are more or less locks.

No docs? Ok, then I'll go with "Diabolique" then instead.

Heh, I actually just watched the Scorsese/Coppola video the other day. The horror director panel looks interesting.

I might use this for an essay I'm working on. Thanks, Drac. Cool, it's an excerpt from a long video series called "A Personal Journey Through American Cinema with Martin Scorsese." Good stuff.

I think we're being too quick to dismiss The Seven Year Itch. It's a bad movie sure, but are we really going to ignore the image of Monroe's dress being pushed up by the vents? Never mind being a famous scene, that image is one of the most iconic in all of pop-culture and I think it be a pretty big oversight to not include it. Looking at stuff we could drop, I don't think we really need Rififi. Yes, it is seen by many as the film which perfected the heist film, but the ingredients for it were planted by The Asphalt Jungle, so we can always give the sub-genre its due when we get to 1950. However I'd rather have Rififi than The Blackboard Jungle. I get that socially conscious dramas like this were a big deal back in the 50s, but I think other films like No Way Out and The Defiant Ones are more important and would serve as better representations for the genre.
I think we can at least collectively agree that Rebel Without a Cause and The Night of the Hunter are locks.

Never seen "The Seven Year Itch", I kinda lumped it in with "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" as being not very good movies but only relevant due to Monroe. That is a famous scene though.
And yeah, those two have to be locks, absolutely agree there.

I won't defend the film's artistic quality. It's pretty bad and as Dracula mentioned it hasn't aged spectacularly well. But even so, that image is one of the most famous ever. Plus, Monroe should have some formal recognition on the list. I suppose we do have Some Like it Hot, but that movie is important for reasons beyond Monroe, whereas Seven Year Itch is all her.

Yeah I think "Some Like it Hot" should be enough to represent her, that film is leaps and bounds above the rest of her work and is one of the 100 best American films ever made. I think there are definitely better options for us to go with.

I don't remember that in his retrospective. Or Robin Hood.
Not that I hold much hope for his reviews.

I'm pretty sure Dracula hasn't reviewed Disney movies. He only did Pixar out of peer pressure.

I thought I remembered him commenting on The Sword in the Stone, but I may be making that up.

I thought I remembered him commenting on The Sword in the Stone, but I may be making that up. He was just mocking us for discovering King Arthur through that movie. He read the legend of King Arthur while still in the crib.

I definitely saw Lady and the Tramp and good number of the other "classic" Disney movies when I was a kid, but haven't seen them since and don't remember them particularly well. My retrospective reviews of family movies so far have largely been confined to movies from the last fifteen years or so. Don't remember committing to Sword in the Stone.

I remember them all, unfortunately. In precise detail. My family watched them all the time. I found them a little too drab and depressing for my tastes (as absurd as that may sound to some), even as a kid.
Disney movies did start to get better. I would say I started to enjoy them more with releases like Beauty and the Beast and Lion King. The only one of the 'classics' that I enjoyed somewhat more than the others was Sword in the Stone. Didn't care for any of the others (Pinocchio, Cinderella, Snow White, Dumbo, etc etc). That's why I haven't bothered seeing the new live-action remake of Cinderella, because most of the reviews have said they have enjoyed it, but in comparison with the original. I didn't really care for the original, so I figured I probably wouldn't like this one either.

Still, Lady and the Tramp should be considered.
Anyway, right now Rebel without a cause, Night of the Hunter, Blackboard Jungle are in. And I am giving a vote to 7 Year Itch, so it is in.
Its btween Diabolique and All that Heaven allows.
