BTW for those who are interested, Rifftrax's 2019 Kickstarter is up! they've already reached their $250,000 goal, but think of the stretch goals and donate anyway! This year they're threatening us with Octaman, Star Raiders, and a re-riff of Giant Spider Invasion.

How do I follow up Santa Claus fighting the Devil? With Dracula bickering with a Witch, of course! Today's Rifftrax review is the Halloween special The Night That Dracula Saved the World, with far less world saving than you might think. Also, Spring is coming, so get those toy boats ready and learn how to sail! Today's BONUS SHORT is Sailing a Toy Boat!

Insert witty self promotion comment here. Sorry I'm not really all that inspired by this one, so here is review of Joel, Trace, and J. Elvis's commentary on The Heat at MST3K, Rifftrax, and Beyond. Yes, this is a thing that exists. Our leads in the film look for drugs, and believe me I needed a lot to get through this particular movie. Now to kick the habit with our anti-drug BONUS SHORT Drugs Are Like That! Also, if you haven't backed Rifftrax's Kickstarter riff yet, the time is now! One of their stretch goals is a riff of the movie Street Fighter! This NEEDS to exist!

Star Wars? Tell you what, put that Han Solo in a bikini, make it much cheaper, and shoot it in Italy! Now that's a movie that will sell! Today's review is Starcrash! What a masterstroke!

Star Wars? Tell you what, put that Han Solo in a bikini, make it much cheaper, and shoot it in Italy! Now that's a movie that will sell! Today's review is Starcrash! What a masterstroke! Starcrash is one of those movies MST3K riffs that isn't really all that bad to begin with. By Italian knock-off standards, it's a masterpiece. That's not to say that it's good, but it is a fun watch that Jonah and the bots make even better. It's a shame Starcrash never got a proper sequel. There is a movie whose title (one of it's many titles) is Starcrash 2, but it has nothing to do with the original beyond using all of the FX shots from Starcrash in lieu of filming their own. Might as well refer to Space Mutiny as Battlestar Galactica 2.

I would totally be down for a Starcrash franchise. I'd be more likely to rewatch it over the Star Wars movies.
There were actually quite a few movies on the revival that I thought were solid B-movie fun. I had already seen Land That Time Forgot before it was on the show and enjoyed it, and had a wild time with Reptilicus, The Time Travelers, and Wizards of the Lost Kingdom also. If I gave the edge to season eleven over twelve for anything it's that they had a lot more fun movies featured.

I've become a bit concerned about the future of MST3K on Netflix this week. Netflix appears to be going through a shift in policy regarding their original content. Programs which they don't own outright are being cancelled, regardless of how many views they have. I don't see this being so much a question of "if?", but "when?" I'm sure that eventually, MST3K would be able to move to another streaming service, but that sort of thing takes considerable time, especially if the contract holds the rights up for several years. Actors and writers need to keep working, and may not be available once a new network decides to pick the show up.

Netflix has been on a crusade to own their own content for a while, and it's been obvious ever since they cancelled all of their Marvel shows. Since they've significantly shortened their classic MST collection by 50% this month, it does feel as if their ramping down on the series. The one thing that could be it's saving grace is how cheap it is to produce, and with other studios such as WB starting to pull their content for their own streaming services (rumors are abound that Arrow, Flash, ect will make the jump to DC Universe), they might need to fill that void with something easy.
In retrospect, Netflix probably wasn't the best home for the show. Granted it had the widest audience, and at the time it made sense because it was content hungry and was asking just about everybody for some. But as soon as Shout made the deal, the company seemed to change it's policies. It started to cancel more and it's allegiance with the content it wanted shifted. Add in the fact that MST isn't really a "binge" show, and they tried to turn it into one because that's their formula for success, it really seems like they "don't get it."
Shout has a clause in their contract allowing to shop the series around if Netflix dicks with them (at least they did with season eleven, twelve might be different). Even if Netflix passes on a thirteenth season, Shout has great relationships with Hulu and Amazon, so I have no doubt there will be a future for the series. Those would probably be better homes for the show anyway, and Hulu would likely return the show to the once a week format it thrives upon. And even still, Shout has it's own streaming service as well. Should they start producing original content for it, MST will be a safe fallback for them.

Disappointed that MST didn't riff all the Gamera movies? Maybe you'll be interested in checking out this new fan series called MST3K vs. Gamera: Round II! MST3K, Rifftrax, and Beyond has published our revoew of the first episode, Gamera vs. Viras, and we think it's worth a look!

My Twitter for my blog...just got followed by a porn star.
No seriously. Diana Prince, who now plays Darcy the Mail Girl on Joe Bob Brigg's The Last Drive-In, liked a dumb little tweet I made then followed me. I'm shocked, honored, and a little turned on.

I'm going to be covering something a bit different with my next reviews. I've considered something for a little while, but didn't think it fit the criteria of my blog. Finally I said the hell with it, it's my blog and I'll do what I want.
Anyway, get ready for something fun coming up soon. Multiple reviews will be up at the same time.

Okay folks, I'm ready to unveil a new section of my blog dedicated to The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. I've been considering it for a little while because I was a Joe Bob fan while I was an MST fan when I was a teenager and he helped groom my love for bad cinema. Now that both he and MST are back, I'm in heaven. But I was hesitant about adding him to the site because he's not a riffer, but finally I came to the conclusion that I can write about whatever the hell I want and everyone else can deal with it. I've started out by reviewing the first two movies of his original marathon. Get ready for some Texas Chainsaw Mannequin, because it's Tourist Trap! And Joe Bob follows it up with a camp counselor bloodbath and the infamous twist ending of Sleepaway Camp! I was also lucky enough to be able to watch this weekend's double feature live, and if those want to follow my live tweet storms during these airings can follow me at @ 1godzillafan (no space) on Twitter. This week Joe Bob watched on of his most recent movies, the New Zealand Evil Dead homage of heavy metal DEATHGASM. He then followed the blood and guts up with subtle atmosphere as we switched things up with The Changeling! For the record, I'm going to breeze through Joe Bob's Shudder output before I get back to MST. MST isn't going anywhere, but episodes of Joe Bob are already disappearing from Shudder and I want to get through them before I lose anymore. As of right now I can't review The Prowler, The Legend of Boggy Creek, and Phantasm: RaVager, but hopefully if Shudder regains the rights they'll put them back up. Plus having Joe Bob back is too much fun, and I'm totally addicted right now!

MAY THE 4TH BE WITH ME! Not you. Because I'm going Solo this year. Solo: A Star Wars Story, that is. Last year I watched every Star Wars Rifftrax there was, except this one since it wasn't out yet. It's time to give it it's due! HAPPY STAR WARS DAY! And once you get back from the galaxy far, far away and return to this great country, remind yourself What It Means to Be an American with today's BONUS SHORT! (PS, I know I promised more Last Drive-In entries, but my internet service went down and so far it hasn't been fixed. I'm working on a few, but it's a pain when you can only stream via phone. And people wonder why I hate streaming.)

It's been a while since I've done my previous Last Drive-In update, but that's mostly due to internet issues. But I've sucked it up and accepted that I was destined to watch Joe Bob on my phone. But because of the internet issues I missed out on logging Daughters of Darkness, which was removed from Shudder a week ago. I'm kind of pissed about that, since I love me some lesbian vampire movies. But without further adeau, here are the entries I was working on before everything went nuts. They're now ready for all to read! First, David Cronenberg brings us the chilling horror tale of the armpit vampire. It's Rabid! Up next, a magical creature uses your own desires against you in this horror sex comedy. No it's not Hobgoblins, it's the imp of Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama! Third, don't laugh at the tale. Heed if you call him. The legend lives, beware the Madman Marz. The Madman legend is real! And finally, Space Chief himself, Sonny Chiba, is the most kickass werewolf this side of Lon Chaney Jr. As he plays Wolf Guy: Enraged Lycanthrope! For the record, things are looking up for my internet access, which likely means I can keep up with further Friday night double features in the future. Too bad there are only three left! Hopefully Shudder orders more!
