I added a few more unriffed flicks to my collection. As a good luck charm, I bought Olive's blu-rays of Fire Maidens of Outer Space and The Space Children (I already owned The Deadly Bees), in hopes that maybe somehow karma will roundabout into a Volume 40 release with those titles. I haven't cracked those open yet, but I'll get to them.
While I was looking at blu-rays of MSTed films, I took the opportunity to order Code Red's release of Devil Fish also. This is one I was eager to take a look at, since I have a weird fondness for the episode. Picture is pretty good, though it looks a bit DNRed with frozen grain, and there are some print flaws still present, but slight.
I didn't have time to watch a full movie before bed, but I skimmed it. Interesting notes: That prologue with the middle age couple being attacked by the Devil Fish was actually taken from the middle of the film and tacked onto the beginning of the edit seen on MST, which I presume was done to get to the Devil Fish faster (the opening of the film here is the synth opening credits followed by the helicopter pulling the body out of the water). There's also a slight subplot scene of a woman who is murdered because she threatened to expose the government's link to the Devil Fish. I wondered if maybe the scene was cut for time, then the agent sent to kill her rips her robe off and she spends most of her death scene topless and in her underwear and thought "Okay, that's why it's not in the MST version."
I also had to compare the "I let one out for fun" scenes. Yup. There's definitely a surprise for the viewers there. It's a little shadowy, but it's there.
Finding these unedited flicks is pretty fun, honestly. I'm not sure if I want to collect them all, but here are the ones I have so far:
The Green Slime The Mad Monster The Corpse Vanishes The Crawling Hand Catalina Caper The Hellcats Godzilla vs. Megalon Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster Gamera Gamera vs. Barugon Gamera vs. Gaos Gamera vs. Guiron Earth vs. the Spider Gamera vs. Zigra Santa Claus Conquers the Martians The Giant Gila Monster Teenagers from Outer Space Attack of the Giant Leeches The Killer Shrews Hercules Unchained Indestructable Man Hercules Against the Moon Men Hercules and the Captive Women Tormented Fire Maidens of Outer Space "Manos" The Hands of Fate Swamp Diamonds Eegah Mitchell The Brain That Wouldn't Die The Wild Wild World of Batwoman Beginning of the End The Atomic Brain The Creeping Terror Bloodlust! The Skydivers High School Big Shot The Beast of Yucca Flats The Amazing Transparent Man This Island Earth The Brute Man Revenge of the Creature The Leech Woman The Mole People The Deadly Mantis Space Mutiny The Phantom Planet The Pumaman The Deadly Bees The Space Children Devil Fish The Screaming Skull It Lives By Night Reptilicus The Time Travelers
I also have seen these ones, but don't own them:
The Crawling Eye The Black Scorpion Gorgo The Land That Time Forgot Yongary, Monster From the Deep

On another note about that prologue actually being a later scene in Devil Fish, a stray thought occurred to me a while ago as to whether moving the scene hurt the film at all. My gut instinct was no, as the scene is a bit disconnected from the rest of the movie and it makes the opening a bit punch her (basically, the version on MST has far more problematic scene re-arrangement than this one AKA "Just because you CAN edit doesn't mean you SHOULD."). Then it occurred to me that it might offset the pacing of the movie a little bit, since the lackluster human story is countered by the Devil Fish attacks that are spread throughout, and that one is probably the highlight.
Then I had the sudden epiphany that the scene in question may have sevrved a purpose in the middle of the movie. The film in its uncut glory actually reveals the Devil Fish in segments and it slowly builds to the point that it's some weird Sharktopus creature. At the beginning of the movie they're pulling mauled bodies out of the water with no creature in sight. Then we get a face reveal as the Devil Fish snaps at a pair of guys in a broad, revealing it isn't a simple shark. Then that somewhat climaxes with the scene with the middle-age couple, which reveals that the Devil Fish has tentacles too. Bumping that scene to the beginning spoils what the Devil Fish is and completely fucks the reveal stages of the movie.
Like whoa man. Does Devil Fish have some sort of artistic integrity? My mind is blown right now. I mean, consider that Lamberto Bava would go on to direct the far superior Demons after this movie. There's talent present, just not fully utilized.

I'm thinking I need to revise my Devil Fish review. I was on the Shout TV app skimming the MST version and whew boy. Seeing the original version makes the editing of the MST version seem that much worse.
I was told many years ago that the version on MST was a TV edit that had choppy editing to cover up the gore scenes, but what I'm looking at here is something more. This is a hatchet job. The movie has been cut to pieces and looks like a jigsaw puzzle in the wrong order. That entire "Just because you CAN edit..." sequence is three seperate scenes chopped up and spliced together, and part of one of them is tacked on to the added prologue for no apparent reason.
I don't know what the editing intent is, but I think whoever told me this was a watered down TV edit was bullshitting me. Maybe there is a half-truth to it, in that this was the edit that was sold to television, but I'm suspecting this was a home video edit, kind of like how Film Ventures would create their own credit sequences for movies like Cave Dwellers and Pod People. It's possible they thought they were improving the movie somehow by adding a Devil Fish attack to the beginning and trying to rush through character introductions, but damn, it must be a director's worst nightmare to see the most well known version be such a hack job, even if the movie isn't very good to begin with.
I need to watch the uncut film and the MST version back to back. This is fascinating to me.

The Mads live stream of Walk the Dark Street was tonight. Very, very bad movie, but Trace and Frank are always fun to be around. I enjoyed Glen of Glenda more, and I have The Tingler on my laptop but haven't watched it yet, so I can't compare. Next month they're doing a collection of shorts, so needless to say I'm on pins and needles waiting for that. Trace and Frank shine with shorts.
We had a surprise guest this evening though, because Jonah Ray was streaming with them. He didn't riff, but he said hi in the intro and answered a few questions in the Q&A. It's great to see the new and old casts palling around, though Frank seems to be familiar with Jonah's episodes but Trace doesn't seem to watch them (he is unfamiliar with Mac and Me, at the very least).
Jonah was asked directly "When will we see you riff again?" His answer was a simple "I don't know," so still no news on the future of MST.

After the cancellation of the 1996 kids' show "VR Troopers", the cast and crew got drunk together and dubbed over the show for their own entertainment

Another great show from Trace and Frank tonight! Next month is The Brain from Planet Arous, and I'm excited just from hearing the title!

Just saw the theatrical screening of Rifftrax's Jack-O. I give it a thumbs up, so when this one hits VOD it's worth your money.
Interestingly before the main feature they riffed a short on Halloween Safety. Frank and Trace riffed this exact same short last night during their live stream, so wow. Two different riffs on this thing in two days. I don't even think it's new to the riffing world, because I believe Bridget and Mary Jo riffed it during a Halloween special a while back.

Eat My Dust. Battle Beyond the Stars. Movies I’ve recommended at the Film Club but PG Cooper & Dracula say I’m trolling. I guess Patton Oswald is a troll too.

Am finally watching an MST episode for my blog. Feeling great. Hopefully I can breeze through the last 36 episodes without trouble.
Hint: The next one is directed by Roger Corman and stars Beverly Garland. That doesn't quite narrow it down, but I'm pretty sure it's my last one with that pairing.

The Rifftrax channel on Pluto TV has been airing Wonder Women (1973) lately, and all it's topless glory too. My local Alamo showed it unriffed at their monthly AGFA Secret Screening the week before Wonder Woman (2017) was released.
