"Falling Man" by Don DeLillo First book in awhile that I couldn't finish. Threw it against a wall in frustration. It's how I quit books.

Here's the thing: DeLillo is a great writer from a stylistic point of view, yet this story is basically inert. All of his characters talk like smug intellectuals too. No one seems to use any colloquialisms, which is pretty hard to believe.

I just finished Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank (published 1959), which I hadn't read since high school.
I remembered it being quite good, but as an adult the story just didn't hold up very well. I suppose part of it is that we no longer live in the shadow of the Cold War and nuclear armageddon, but that's not what my main problems with the book are. The people of Fort Repose, the central Florida town the story takes place in, are all incredibly slow to respond and adapt to the collapse of civilization. Even the simplest and most obvious of responses like having a town meeting and determining how they should proceed in the wake of their sudden isolation is never even considered. Randy, the main character organizes the people who live nearby his own house, but nothing more until near the end of the book, by which time it's been nearly a year since The Day. There's a big river running right by Randy's house, but the notion of building a rudimentary hydro-electric plant is never even brought up. One of Randy's neighbors is the town librarian, yet all that comes of this fact is the revelation that now that there's no TV, radio or movies, everybody in town flocks to the library to read for their entertainment. The notion of using the town library as a vital resource to learn how to reestablish basic services like the telephone and electricity are never addressed. Everybody is just waiting for someone from the US government to show up and bring back civilization for them.

Saint Odd by Dean Koontz - the last of the series it was pretty good
Doc: The Rape of the Town of Lovell by Jack Olsen - this was a true story about a doctor who took advantage of naive Mormon women and basically used gynecological exams as an opportunity to stick his dick where it didn't belong. He did this over 25 years to all ages of women. Disgusting.
Mystery on the Isles of Shoals by J. Dennis Robinson - This was a true late 1800's story about a double axe murder that took place on a coastal Maine island (off the coast of NH actually) called Smuttynose.
One Deadly Night by John Glatt - this was another true crime book about a cop who killed his wife and two kids and tried to cover his tracks. Horrific crime. The book could have been written better.
The Woodchipper Murder by Arthur Herzog III - another true crime story which is, well, just what it says. Fargo for real - and real gross.
Silence on Monte Sol by Jack Olsen - curiously I found this on the true crime list instead of the WWII list, maybe it's because of the author, but The Rape of Nanking is another book on the same kind of subject - slaughter of innocents in war time, and that was on the history list. In any case, this was a true story about horrific events that happened near the town of Bologna, Italy. I just can't imagine the horror of being grouped up and mowed down by machine gun fire and staying alive under the dead riddled bodies of your friends and family while the Nazis try to finish everyone off by tossing grenade after grenade onto the bodies and then using s flame thrower to set everything ablaze. A must read for history and true crime buffs.

The Embrace by Aphrodite Jones - this one is a true story about Teenagers who find a leader in Rod Ferrell a misfit who believed he was a vampire - they role play and get way too deep into fantasy and basically run away from home for a joy ride. In the process they pick up a friend in Florida and Ferrell kills her parents with a crowbar in order to take their vehicle and drive to New Orleans. How'm I doin' Justin any better? lol

Ramplate is the Zodiac killer. Nope, according to a very compelling book that states a strong case for the real Identity of the Zodiac Killer The Most Dangerous Animal of All: Searching for My Father…and Finding the Zodiac Killer by Gary L. Stewart and Susan Mustafa - the killer's name most likely was... Earl Van Best Jr. who is now dead and buried in Mexico -biggrin-

Well, you would say that, wouldn't you.... .....ZODIAC! Ok yes, you got me, I admit it. The ages of 7 and 8 were rough for me, so I saved up my lunch money bought a gun and took a plane to California. There I proceeded to shoot couples kissing in cars so they would not spread dangerous kooties.

Blindsight - Peter Watts
I also tried to read The Martian by Andy Weir. But that was clearly a self published book... the quality is just not there. I'm sure it will be a decent movie though.
