Yeah I don't waste my time with the Globes, they're like a boring preseason game with nothing really at stake. Glad "Boyhood" won though, I think it's looking really good to take home Best Picture.

Lebanese film “Ghadi” vying for Oscar nomination “Ghadi” set in a fictional village near Batroun, tackles the daring campaign waged by a father to overcome villagers’ animosity toward his disabled son. Written by Georges Khabbaz, the film was previously awarded the audience choice award at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea and was recently selected by the Culture Ministry as Lebanon’s official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

What? Mel Gibson was great in Expendables 3, he was the redeeming factor in it.

If only Kirk's movie could win a Razzie and an Oscar. I think his movie should rack up the most. I haven't seen any of the films nominated (of course) but that movie makes "Left Behind" look amazing. I want that loon Kirk Cameron to win Worst Actor too, though he'd probably say the Razzies are run by Satan and protest. Then again, should we be giving that guy any attention?

What? Mel Gibson was great in Expendables 3, he was the redeeming factor in it. The people who run the razzies have proven time and again that they don't take their jobs very seriously and will nominate a celebrity they want to bash whenever given the opportunity. There's a good chance that the voters did not even bother to watch the movie.

I'll be backing Cage, as always. #TeamCagemeister
They really went to town on Kelsey Grammer...1 nomination for four movies. Ouch.

Best Picture
"American Sniper"
"Birdman"
"Boyhood"
"The Grand Budapest Hotel"
"The Imitation Game"
"Selma"
"The Theory of Everything"
"Whiplash"
[This would be the first time with only Eight nominees in the category, the only semi surprises are the absence of Nightcrawler (which was never truly an Oscar movie to begin with and clearly didn't have the support people thought it did) and the presence of Selma (which got almost nothing anywhere else and which I suspect was only begrudgingly voted for to fend off the angry think-pieces)]
Best Director
Alejandro González Iñárritu, "Birdman"
Richard Linklater, "Boyhood"
Bennett Miller, "Foxcatcher"
Wes Anderson, "The Grand Budapest Hotel"
Morten Tyldum, "The Imitation Game"
[The Bennett Miller nomination is a huge shocker. It's the first time since BP was expanded that a director was nominated without a BP nomination and clearly indicates that there was a lot more support for the movie in the Academy than people thought.]
Best Actor
Steve Carell, "Foxcatcher"
Bradley Cooper, "American Sniper"
Benedict Cumberbatch, "The Imitation Game"
Michael Keaton, "BIrdman"
Eddie Redmayne, "The Theory of Everything"
[The Cooper and Carell nominations were both semi-surprises, most people were thinking Gyllenhaal was a lock, but in retrospect it's pretty obvious that people were getting their hopes up to high for that. Oyelowo's absence further illustrates how poorly managed that movie's campaign was.]
Best Actress
Marion Cotillard, "Two Days, One Night"
Felicity Jones, "The Theory of Everything"
Julianne Moore, "Still Alice"
Rosamund Pike, "Gone Girl"
Reese Witherspoon, "Wild"
Best Supporting Actor
Robert Duvall, "The Judge"
Ethan Hawke, "Boyhood"
Edward Norton, "Birdman"
Mark Ruffalo, "Foxcatcher"
J.K. Simmons, "Whiplash"
[Pretty much exactly what everyone thought it would be]
Best Supporting Actress
Patricia Arquette, "Boyhood"
Laura Dern, "Wild"
Keira Knightley, "The Imitation Game"
Emma Stone, "Birdman"
Meryl Streep, "Into the Woods"
[Dern is only a minor surprise, everyone knew the fifth slot was open and she's a fairly obvious choice to fill it]
Best Adapted Screenplay
"American Sniper" (Jason Hall)
"The Imitation Game" (Graham Moore)
"Inherent Vice" (Paul Thomas Anderson)
"The Theory of Everything" (Anthony McCarten)
"Whiplash" (Damien Chazelle)
[The writing branch usually throws a bone to a critically acclaimed film that other branches don't care for and this year it was Inherent Vice. Kind of obvious in retrospect, adapting Thomas Pynchon into something semi-coherent isn't easy and most writers would recognize that. Also, the Academy clearly had not interest in Gone Girl if it couldn't even show up here.]
Best Original Screenplay
"Birdman" (Alejandro González Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, Armando Bo)
"Boyhood" (Richard Linklater)
"Foxcatcher" (E. Max Frye, Dan Futterman)
"The Grand Budapest Hotel" (Wes Anderson, Hugo Guiness)
"Nightcrawler" (Dan Gilroy)
[Another surprise Foxcatcher nod]
Best Cinematography
"Birdman" (Emmanuel Lubezki)
"The Grand Budapest Hotel" (Robert D. Yeoman)
"Ida" (Ryszard Lenczweski; Lukasz Zal)
"Mr. Turner" (Dick Pope)
"Unbroken" (Roger Deakins)
[Nice to see Ida and Mr. Turner get in, not so nice to see Unbroken get in (not Deakin's best work) and a little surprised to see Grand Budapest. Also there are inprobably two nominees here that are mostly in the 1.33:1 aspect ratio.]
Best Costume Design
"The Grand Budapest Hotel" (Milena Canonero)
"Inherent Vice" (Mark Bridges)
"Into the Woods" (Colleen Atwood)
"Mr. Turner" (Jacqueline Durran)
"Maleficent" (Anna B. Sheppard)
[Inherent Vice? Interesting... Otherwise not a ton of surprise here]
Best Film Editing
"American Sniper" (Joel Cox, Gary Roach)
"Boyhood" (Sandra Adair)
"The Grand Budapest Hotel" (Barney Pilling)
"The Imitation Game" (William Goldenberg)
"Whiplash" (Tom Cross)
[The Imitation Game nomination here is a bad sign which could signal broad support for it as a BP winner]
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
"Foxcatcher"
"The Grand Budapest Hotel"
"Guardians of the Galaxy"
[Hmmm, a set of makeup nominees without a single jarring embarrassment.]
Best Music (Original Score)
"The Grand Budapest Hotel" (Alexandre Desplat)
"The Imitation Game" (Alexandre Desplat)
"Interstellar" (Hans Zimmer)
"Mr. Turner" (Gary Yershon)
"The Theory of Everything" (Jóhann Jóhannsson)
[Didn't see Mr. Turner happening here...]
Best Music (Original Song)
"Lost Stars" from "Begin Again"
"I'm Not Gonna Miss You" from "Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me"
"Everything is Awesome" from "The LEGO Movie"
"Glory" from "Selma"
"Grateful" from "Beyond the Lights"
[Was worried that Glory would get sabotaged here, but now that it's in it will probably win.]
Best Production Design
"The Grand Budapest Hotel" (Adam Stockhausen; Anna Pinnock)
"The Imitation Game" (Maria Djurkovic; Tatiana Macdonald)
"Interstellar" (Nathan Crowley; Gary Fettis, Paul Healy)
"Into the Woods" (Dennis Gassner; Anna Pinnock)
"Mr. Turner" (Suzie Davies; Charlotte Watts)
[Nothing too shocking here]
Best Sound Editing
"American Sniper"
"Birdman"
"The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies"
"Interstellar"
"Unbroken"
[Even the visual effects branch is finally over the Hobbit movies, yet it's still in here]
Best Sound Mixing
"American Sniper"
"Birdman"
"Interstellar"
"Unbroken"
"Whiplash"
[Nothing too shocking]
Best Visual Effects
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier"
"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes"
"Guardians of the Galaxy"
"Interstellar"
"X-Men: Days of Future Past"
[First X-Men movie to get in, interesting. Very superhero dominant, but that is perhaps to be expected given how the year has gone. Also first time in a while there's no BP nominee here.]
Best Animated Feature Film
"Big Hero 6"
"The Boxtrolls"
"How to Train Your Dragon 2"
"Song of the Sea"
"The Tale of Princess Kaguya"
[the absence of The Lego Movie will probably be the most discussed "snub" of the day]
Best Foreign Language Film
"Wild Tales" (Damián Szifrón; Argentina)
"Tangerines" (Zaza Urushadze; Estonia)
"Timbuktu" (Abderrahmane Sissako; Mauritania)
"Ida" (Pawel Pawlikowski; Poland)
"Leviathan" (Andrey Zvyagintsev; Russia)
[Yep]
Best Documentary Feature
"CITIZENFOUR"
"Finding Vivian Mayer"
"Last Days in Vietnam"
"The Salt of the Earth"
"Virunga"
[Yep]
Best Documentary (Short Subject)
"Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1"
"Joanna"
"Our Curse"
"The Reaper"
"White Earth"
Best Short Film (Animated)
"The Bigger Picture"
"The Dam Keeper"
"Feast"
"Me and My Moulton"
"A Single Life"
Best Short Film (Live Action)
"Aya"
"Boogaloo and Graham"
"Butter Lamp"
"Parvaneh"
"The Phone Call"

THOUGHTS/COMMENTSBEST PICTUREAmerican Sniper Birdman Boyhood The Grand Budapest Hotel The Imitation Game Selma The Theory of Everything Whiplash No Gone Girl. No Nightcrawler. No Interstellar. But please, keep defending The Grand Budapest Hotel. It was a movie released in MARCH and almost everyone had forgotten about it. The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything... where's my barf bag? And I still don't know what the fuck Whiplash is. It's something about J.K. Simmons bitching at a drummer for 2 hours. It could be good. It could not be good. It's tough to tell because no one has actually seen it. The same can be said about American Sniper, which gets its wide release this weekend, and Selma. I love what the Academy Awards has become: let's nominate movies no one has seen and probably won't remember in 6 months. BEST ANIMATED FILMBig Hero 6 The Boxtrolls How to Train Your Dragon 2 Song of the Sea The Tale of the Princess Kaguya Eh. BEST DIRECTORAlejandro G. Inarritu, Birdman Richard Linklater, Boyhood Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher Wes Anderson, The Grand Budapest Hotel Morten Tyldum, The Imitation Game "You take the good. You take the bad. That's the facts of life. The facts of life!" Who knew an 80's sitcom could sum up the Oscars so well? BEST ACTORSteve Carell, Foxcatcher Bradley Cooper, American Sniper Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game Michael Keaton, Birdman Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything In a month, Michael Keaton will become the fourth Batman to win an Academy Award. Someone needs to get Val Kilmer a great movie and pronto! It's funny how there's a "Superman curse" but playing Batman is actually great for your career. BEST ACTRESSMarion Cotillard, Two Days/One Night Felicity Jones, The Theory of Everything Julianne Moore, Still Alice Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl Reese Witherspoon, Wild Marion Cotillard screws over Amy Adams. Oh well. And please tell me Julianne Moore isn't gonna win an Oscar for a movie that NO ONE will ever see. BEST SUPPORTING ACTORRobert Duvall, The Judge Ethan Hawke, Boyhood Edward Norton, Birdman Mark Ruffalo, Foxcatcher J.K. Simmons, Whiplash Predictable. Predictable. Predictable. They should have nominated Vin Diesel for Groot. That would have shaken things up. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESSPatricia Arquette, Boyhood Laura Dern, Wild Keira Knightley, The Imitation Game Emma Stone, Birdman Meryl Streep, Into the Woods Laura Dern? That came out of nowhere. Then again... no one has actually seen Wild. And can we please stop nominating Meryl Streep for everything? BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAYBirdman Boyhood Foxcatcher The Grand Budapest Hotel Nightcrawler Hey, look, everybody. It's NIGHTCRAWLER. Say hello to NIGHTCRAWLER. "Hi, Nightcrawler. How are you doing? Try not to get too drunk tonight." BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAYAmerican Sniper The Imitation Game Inherent Vice The Theory of Everything Whiplash JustinBEST CINEMATOGRAPHYBirdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) The Grand Budapest Hotel Ida Mr. Turner Unbroken ... I guess. BEST EDITINGAmerican Sniper Boyhood The Grand Budapest Hotel The Imitation Game Whiplash BEST PRODUCTIONThe Grand Budapest Hotel The Imitation Game Interstellar Into the Woods Mr. Turner WOAH! Stop the presses! Interstellar got a nomination. BEST COSTUME DESIGNThe Grand Budapest Hotel Inherent Vice Into the Woods Maleficent Mr. Turner Congrats to Justin . BEST MAKE-UP & HAIRSTYLINGFoxcatcher The Grand Budapest Hotel Guardians of the Galaxy Three movies? Really? REALLY? You could not think of two more movies to nominate? Really, Oscars? Really? BEST SCOREThe Grand Budapest Hotel The Imitation Game Interstellar Mr. Turner The Theory of Everything On principal, I can't agree with Interstellar. 90% of Hans Zimmer music is written by "additional composers." Hence why he RARELY gets nominated. He almost always gets disqualified. And as much as I loved the music in The Grand Budapest Hotel, I couldn't tell what was original and what wasn't. This is a sketchy category this year. BEST SONG"Everything Is Awesome" from THE LEGO MOVIE "Glory" from SELMA "Grateful" from BEYOND THE LIGHTS "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" from GLEN CAMPBELL: I'LL BE ME "Lost Stars" from BEGIN AGAIN The irony of nominating Everything Is Awesome was lost on the Oscars. BEST SOUND EDITING & MIXINGAmerican Sniper Birdman The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Interstellar Unbroken Hey, guys! The Hobbit got a nomination. American Sniper Birdman Interstellar Unbroken Whiplash American Sniper is gonna win so many Oscars. iverdawg is gonna be pissed. BEST VISUAL EFFECTSCaptain America: The Winter Soldier Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Guardians of the Galaxy Interstellar X-Men: Days of Future Past I think the Academy Awards confused BEST PICTURE with BEST VISUAL EFFECTS. Someone should notify them before voting starts.

In a month, Michael Keaton will become the fourth Batman to win an Academy Award. Someone needs to get Val Kilmer a great movie and pronto! It's funny how there's a "Superman curse" but playing Batman is actually great for your career. Christian Bale, George Clooney... who am I missing? Marion Cotillard screws over Amy Adams. Oh well. And please tell me Julianne Moore isn't gonna win an Oscar for a movie that NO ONE will ever see. I generally roll my eyes when you start ranting about movies "no one" saw, but it's actually true about this one. Predictable. Predictable. Predictable. They should have nominated Vin Diesel for Groot. That would have shaken things up. Voice only performances aren't eligible Laura Dern? That came out of nowhere. Then again... no one has actually seen Wild. And can we please stop nominating Meryl Streep for everything? It wasn't out of nowhere, she had a definate campaign going and was considered one of the lead dark horse possibilities. The irony of nominating Everything Is Awesome was lost on the Oscars. true

The movie has been on HBO for the past month. Most people should have seen it by now. Also, American Sniper is gonna end up at the biggest moneymaker of the Best Picture nominees. Warner Bros' advertising has been A+ and it's tracking to have a good opening weekend.
