Thankfully, no one walked out. In fact, at the end they started applauding. We got up to acknowledge it and it grew louder and everyone rose up out of their seats and all turned in our direction. A standing ovation. They proceeded to applaud us for about 10 minutes, maybe more. It was the most incredible, surreal experience of my life – and certainly the best.

Even the Academy Is Worried That the Oscars Will Be Boring This Year!

After last year’s Oscar ceremony, the Academy was riding high. Host Ellen DeGeneres pulled in record ratings and, nearly a year later, people are still talking about the fun-filled ceremony. Pizza! Pharrell! Selfies! Oh, my! But it looks like the Academy’s confidence isn’t quite as strong when it comes to this year’s ceremony, and it has a multi-million dollar plan to make sure you tune in.

According to The Hollywood Reporter and a report prepared by Haworth Marketing + Media, the Academy has allocated $5.5 million toward off-network media buys in order to address three major concerns. First and foremost, there’s a worry that the presumptive nominees this year aren’t as audience-friendly as they have been in the past. Or, as Haworth put it in its report to the Academy: “Predicted nominations focus on art films rather than major blockbusters that have mass appeal.” In short, no Jennifer Lawrence on the nominations list, no songs from Frozen, and no dramatic showdown between Leonardo DiCaprio and Matthew McConaughey.

Secondly, the report cites counter-programming as a credible threat. In this watch-the-highlights-the-next-morning-on-YouTube culture, it’s entirely possibly that viewers would opt to tune into popular Sunday-night shows like AMC’s The Walking Dead or PBS’s Downton Abbey instead of watching the entire ceremony.

The last concern has to do with social media. The Haworth report suggests the Academy increase its social-media budget to $500,000, which is about an 80 percent increase from last year. This might just be a sign of changing marketing times. But it’s also true that Ellen DeGeneres, with her 37.2 million Twitter followers and selfie-snapping ways, has a stronger social-media presence than this year’s host, Neil Patrick Harris. Not that Harris doesn’t have a following. His Twitter account boasts 12.6 million followers and his Instagram game is legen—wait for it—dary. But, at the very least, this emphasis on social-media marketing indicates that a Twitter follower count in the millions may be a new requirement for high-profile awards-show hosts.

I said it before and I'll say it again: Guardians of the Galaxy.

Well the Academy does need to spruce it up a bit, for example I hated that instead of showing clips of the film they elected to have other actors go on stage and gush about the nominees. "Oh DiCaprio, you're just grand!" Bleh. Movie highlights/clips/montages are awesome, especially with that orchestra score. Plus I'm sure they'll do something nice for Robin Williams, so people will be interested in that. I don't particularly enjoy the format of the show, and it takes forever to get to the good stuff, but I watch every year because I'm an insane movie person. Audiences shouldn't be scared off by not knowing what "Boyhood" and "Birdman" are, they should say "Hmmm, I should look into these films and see what the fuss is about!" But no, they just want MTV Movie Award bullshit Miley Cyrus dance numbers and categories like Best Kiss and Best Fight Scene (MTV is the worst). I say to hell with those people, but obviously the Academy wants their ratings.

Seriously though if I ever won an MTV Movie Award, firstly I'd hang my head in shame. Secondly, I'd blast them on stage and talk about what a bullshit sham the whole show is and slam my award on the ground and walk off throwing deuces. Yeah, that would be great.

Let's go back to 2009. Or should I say 2010? Almost nobody watched The Hurt Locker. If I'm not mistaken, it's one of the lowest money-making Best Picture winners of all-time. Or at least that was the case back then. I'm sure, by now, most people haven seen it. But that wasn't the focus of that year's ceremony. Everyone was fixated on James Cameron vs his ex-wife. I think this year's Oscars also needs some drama. And it's not gonna be Boyhood vs Birdman. It's not gonna be Gone Girl vs Nightcrawler. If the Oscars use their brains. If the Oscars play this right. This year it would be GUARDIANS VS. INTERSELLAR. I can guarantee you - and I would be willing to put money into this - if the Academy Awards nominate Guardians of the Galaxy and Interstellar in every single technical category, even the "important" ones like cinematography and editing, the Internet will crash within minutes. It would completely re-write the awards season dialogue. Neil Patrick Harris would have to re-do his entire opening number. This whole Oscar season would start from scratch. Why? Because there's nothing that movie geeks love more than a good "pop culture vs art" debate. This would be our generation's "Star Wars vs Close Encounters" battle. In 1978, Star Wars was nominated for Best Picture. Steven Spielberg AND George Lucas were nominated for Best Director. Who won? Woody Allen for Annie Hall. This could be a repeat of that.

Oscars, if you're out there lurking, you have one week to make this happen. Don't fuck it up.

I was rooting for Birdman in the comedy category and while I might have slightly preferred Carrell, I don't necessarily have anything against Theory as far as that performance is concerned, especially when it's not directly competing against Keaton.

Also I didn't bother watching the ceremony, which probably says something about how much I care about the Golden Globes.
