Old people are closer to death and aren't gonna obsesse over the movie. 10 years from now, we'll still be talking about Nightcrawler. 10 MONTHS from now, people aren't gonna even remember The Imitation Game or The Theory of Everything or Unbroken or whatever other cliche biopic will win an Oscar this year. I never said those biopics were any good...

Yeah, woo hoo! Interstellar for Best Score and nothing else! Considering that Hans Zimmer has an army of "additional composers", he probably won't even qualify.

Birdman should be at Redbox by now. If Fox re-releases it on theaters, I will slap them.

Oh, also A Most Violent Year. That and American Sniper are really the only two I'm waiting for before I close the book on 2014.

deadline.com/2015/01/benedict-cumberbatch-stephen-hawking-golden-globe-theory-everything-imitation-game-discovery-channel-1201342691/In one of those incredible coincidences that makes covering TV so rewarding: Thursday is Stephen Hawking’s 73rd birthday. Sunday is the Golden Globe Awards. The Theory Of Everything, the movie about Hawking’s early life, is up for a Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama. Eddie Redmayne, who plays Hawking in the movie, is up for a Globe for his performance. Benedict Cumberbatch is competing against Redmayne for that Globe, for his work in The Imitation Game, also playing a real-life British brainiac, Alan Turing. Cumberbatch also played Hawking, in the 2004 BBC telefilm Hawking, which also is about his early life. The Sherlock star did not win a Golden Globe for that work but did win a Golden Nymph. Discovery Channel will air Hawking at 10 PM Saturday as a sort of Golden Globe Awards walkup-cum-Stephen Hawking birthday salute. It’s a bid to attract fans of The Theory Of Everything, of The Imitation Game, of Stephen Hawking, of the Golden Globes Awards — and, of course, Cumberbatch obsessives (aka “Cumberbitches”).

Thoughts:
How the fuck is Foxcatcher an original screenplay??? And no Birdman??? For the first time this season, Boyhood has the edge.

If anything Captain America should be up there more than Guardians.
I love guardians but as a movie Captain had way more to offer

The WGA awards can be kind of weird, movies have to be written by people who are in good standing with the union, which often disqualifies movies that aren't written by established Hollywood screenwriters. Birdman, Selma, Mr. Turner, and The Theory of Everything were among the unelligibles this year.
Also they're considering Whiplash (which was sort of based on a short film the director made but sort of not) to be original while the Academy is considering it adapted.

I don't think Captain America is even in this race. I'm almost certain that Guardians will be "the" technical darling at the Oscars this year. It probably should be Interstellar, but that movie has no heat whatsoever. Guardians could probably end up being the big winner this year. Visual Effects. Sound Effects. Mixing. Make-Up? Set Design? Costumes?

The Foxcatcher book was actually published by Mark Schultz just this year in order to cash in on the release of the movie, it was written separately from the production, which was officially just based on "true events."

Just because it isn't based on a book, doesn't make it an original screenplay. It's based on the news. It's based on current events.

Also they're considering Whiplash (which was sort of based on a short film the director made but sort of not) to be original while the Academy is considering it adapted. I still don't know how that makes Foxcatcher an original screenplay. Unless a movie is credited to a specific book, historical movies are always considered to be original. The general rule of thumb is that anything that doesn't have a "based on" credit right after the writing credit will be considered original. It's a copyright distinction.

Mike Leigh getting screwed again, what a surprise. Easily one of the most underrated auteurs out there if not the most.
