I don't know if it said this anywhere, but it seems a lot of people are claiming that since this category is introduced that means these certain films can't be nominated for both. If anybody stated that anywhere then I must have missed it. What I do know is that being nominated for Animated didn't prevent Toy Story 3 and Up from being nominated for Best Picture. Though it sure aa hell didn't make their winning the Animated award such a surprise. That is the other problem. If they had done this last year the nominees for Fake Best Picture would have been Dunkirk, Get Out, and three other movies that won't win. The two with a shot are already real nominees so who gives a shit?

Which is kinda where I think my Battle Royale idea comes into play. Taking last years nominees into consideration you'd have, let's say for the sake of argument, Phantom Thread for best drama, Three Billboards for best comedy, Dunkirk for best action, Shape of Water for best fantasy/sci-fi, Get Out for best horror/thriller, and Coco for best animated. Then the academy awards a Best Picture out of those six at the end of the night.
You pretty much end up with the same nominees but you could cover more ground with what could be nominated. Maybe even The Disaster Artist might not have been snubbed (not bloody likely thanks to Hollywood politics) and you could make the net nerds happy by tipping your hat to Logan or Wonder Woman for best action movie. They don't have to win, but just being there seems to make people excited enough.

How would they vote for the overall winner during the show? Electronic controls, like in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

The last 10 years of Best Picture winners have been terrible winners. The only one I can say I really enjoyed in the last 10 years has been "Birdman" and that was just in my top 5 of that year. Best picture nominations blow. Gladiator, Titanic, Lord of the Rings were when they didn't try to just exclude Popular films. Nobody fucking saw these movies, Sorry Dracula, but I am all for this category. No one saw Moonlight or Spotlight. I can think of only a couple of people who went out of there way to see these movies.

Also The Dark Knight, Inception were better films than the best picture winners of these respective years.
These boring ass drama movies suck.

How would they vote for the overall winner during the show? Electronic controls, like in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Stick the directors in a cage and have them fight to the death. It could be a number of ways. On the ballets one could have an option of "of the films selected, which would you choose for best picture" or they could hold a final vote about a week before with NDAs and all that fun stuff. Dunno. I just dream, I don't think.

Best Fantasy Film: Batman Best Action Film: Lethal Weapon 2 Which of the two do you like better? Something like that.

So basically, the Oscars mean just as less as they did before?
Got it.

Now the Kid's Choice Awards can finally rule Hollywood. They've already planted John Cena as their Hydra Agent. Now is the time to STRIKE!

The amount of ignorance is one statement is astounding. I don't know. I've said a lot of things today. There is probably something that came out of my mouth that tops this. Just read an article explaining the changes tonight, this is not the Academy that is pushing for the Popular category. It's coming directly from ABC (Disney). They want the Academy Awards to be like the Super Bowl. More ratings, and Advertisement money... That Answers that question why the ratings have dropped in the last 10 years for the Osars. No one is willing to spend 20 bucks at the movies to watch "12 Years A Slave" IMAX, 3D, and Dolby Cinema is where they are finding audiences these days. The days where most audiences saw Forest Gump, Schlinders List, ect... have significantly dropped.

And ABC and the Academy are deluded if they think more people are going to tune in to see whether or not Avengers Infinity War or Mission Impossible wins this fake award that plainly means nothing and kind of implicitly insults whatever movie wins.

No one is willing to spend 20 bucks at the movies to watch "12 Years A Slave" IMAX, 3D, and Dolby Cinema is where they are finding audiences these days. The days where most audiences saw Forest Gump, Schlinders List, ect... have significantly dropped. Being nominated for the Best Popular Film Award is like having to sit at the kiddie table. Yeah, you still get a meal, but it's a way of saying you don't really belong with the adults and we don't see you as an equal. It's a sleight, not an honour. And yeah, like Drac said, someone who doesn't give a shit about the Oscars is not gonna tune in to the full broadcast to see this condescending category. Ratings are dropping for ALL event television because more and more families are cutting the cord. TV events were things "everyone" watched because "everyone" had cable. I don't think it really has that much to do with the films nominated. In fact, a lot of mainstream, high grossing movies have been nominated in the last ten years. Dunkirk, Get Out, Arrival, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, American Sniper, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street, Argo, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, The Help, The King's Speech, Black Swan, Inception, Toy Story 3, and True Grit all made over $100 million domestically, and many of which were frontrunners to win in their respective years. These ARE popular movies. And before you say, "Well, they're not Avengers popular", well, maybe not, but I guarantee you that if movies like this qualify for the Popular Film Award they'll be the winners. So basically you're advocating for a special award where superhero movies and large tentpoles will still lose. I also have fundamental differences with your "no one wants to see 12 Years a Slave"/"IMAX, 3D, and Dolby is where the money is". Being more popular is not the same as being better. I don't care that more people would rather see The Hunger Games 2, Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Despicable Me 2, Monsters Inc 2, or Fast and Furious 6 than 12 Years a Slave, but that does not mean they're more worthy of winning Best Picture. I'd probably rather get a McChicken, soda, and fries for under $10 than pay $30 for a quality steak, but I still know that the steak is better. Besides, making a shitload of money has its own reward. Namely, you know, the shitload of money. You think Disney would give up their billion dollars for Infinity War or Black Panther if it meant they got a Best Picture nomination?
