PG Cooper I don’t have a problem with the best picture list. (Even though I do believe the nominations have been lackluster the last few years, tons of great movies weren’t on the ballot when they should have been) The problem is ABC realizing they need a new category all together just to get more ratings, not because they deserve an Oscar. Since the Dark Knight. They said the best picture list would could go up to 10 movies, and in the last 10 years they have never shown us 10 movies as a best picture nomination. The easy solution for them should’ve been add more movies to the nomination, instead of creating a whole new category for popular films

If the Oscars want more viewers ABC should stream them free on their website with ads. That would do a lot more to get people watching.

Here's the rub, a lot of people like me and I'm sure a lot of you CS folks watch the Oscars for the historical component. Regardless of my thoughts on a movie, I find it cool to see the movie that industry folks have chosen to represent this particular year in the future. I hated Shape of Water but in fifty years when people ask 'what movies did they watch in the early 2000s?' the first thing they're going to do is see what won Best Picture and that's what's going to pop up.
Unfortunately though, at the end of the day the Oscars is still a tv program like any other, dependent on ratings and viewership. Sometimes we forget about that when this 90 year old institution starts making these big changes. I certainly don't agree with these idiotic changes but unfortunately the Oscars don't count on the opinions of movie fans, they count on those movie fans tuning in. I think it's hard to Monday morning quarterback the Oscars by saying what they can do to get more viewers without putting Hollywood in general under the microscope but personally if they got rid of some of the 'tributes' or song and dance numbers that would trim it down tremendously.

Just pointing out 12 Years a Slave actually made a decent chunk of profit. It probably benefited from Oscar buzz boost, but plenty of people saw it.
I haven't seen it, but I do intend to at some point. Same with Spotlight and Moonlight. Some of the Best Picture winners I did see in the last ten years wound up being among my favorite films of their respective year, such as The Artist, Birdman, and Shape of Water. It's true that they aren't my favorite films of those years, but my interest in film is far more diverse than just "art" or "blockbuster" so I don't think that much of it.

Awards shows suck. Lets face it. But I always said that I would continue to watch the Oscars so long as they continued to showcase the smaller awards, like cinematography, editing, sound, etc. The fact that they still featured these awards showed that they were still dedicated to celebrating the whole film-making process.
I always said if they ever stopped showing the smaller awards I would stop watching The Oscars. So... I guess I'm done watching the oscars.

They did something similarly stupid in 2005 and gave out the awards to people at their seats. Lasted one year and they realized how stupid it was and stopped.

Here's a question: what are the qualifications for a movie to win this award? How is it different than Best Picture? They've already said a movie can potentially win both. Are they really going to tell voters "Ahhh, just go nuts with this one. Turn your brain off - what does your heart say?"

All they gave us was the name and "details forthcoming." They came out later in the day to clarify that movies can win both, and we've got nothing since.

"What most of you guys have all said," is my feeling right now. And if this isn't the biggest slap in the face to moviegoers, I don't know what is...

I feel like the Academy may yet walk back on these choices. Why? Because, with the exception of FShuttari, no one seems to think this is a good idea. The response has been almost universally negative.

In our circles, but I don't know that we actually have that big a voice. At least I hope not, cause that would mean that people are actually listening to those idiots whining about Last Jedi all the time.

I think this indignation is misplaced. Imagine watching the speeches of these directors after they win the lowest common denominator award.
It's gonna be amazingly awkward.
Embrace it.

Academy Award Winner Michael Bay He can put it between his two Razzie Awards and his dusty old DGA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Commercials. He has also apparently been nominated several times for something called the "Sexist Pig" Award from the Alliance of Women Film Journalists.
