Dracula PG Cooper PhantomKnight Ratings tank again, down over 15% from last year which were already the lowest in almost a decade. We’ve discussed this before, but it’s worth repeating, the Oscars no longer reward the best movies. This isn’t a matter of objectivity. Harvey Weinstein may have raped a lot of women but he also tarnished the Academy Awards by turning it into a big commercial for small movies. Remember when big movies won Oscars? Dances With Wolves. Forest Gump. Braveheart. Titanic. Even if these weren’t actually the best movies of the year, it got people invested and they tuned in. No one gives a shit about Moonlight, Spotlight and The King’s Speech. Why would anyone waste 4 hours watching an awards show filled with nominees they have no intention of watching? The problem isn't the Oscars, the problem is Hollywood. If Hollywood would get back to making actual respectable movies at a big budget I'm sure the Oscars would be happy to nominate them.

Event TV in general has seen a decline in rating. Oscars, grammys, superbowl.

Do the ratings include people watching online? Not often. Usually that's a separate chart entirely.

I watched it over the air antenna, I don't think they have anyway of tracking that either.
Most of the ratings come from Cable and such.

The have a representative sample of people put a tracking box on their TVs and write reports. It how they've done ratings since the 50s.

Oscars Creating ‘Popular Film’ Category In Academy Awards ReformIt’s all change at the Oscars – the Academy has unveiled plans for a new category, a shorter telecast and an earlier airdate set to roll out in the coming years. The most attention-grabbing announcement is the arrival of a new award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film. Further details and eligibility requirements are yet to be announced, but the category is expected to cater to more blockbuster and genre films, often seen as maligned by awards ceremonies.
Other planned changes include the televised Oscars show being cut down to three hours (an hour shorter than usual). “To honor all 24 award categories, we will present select categories live, in the Dolby Theatre, during commercial breaks (categories to be determined),” a letter to Academy members reads. “The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast.” The 92nd Oscars have also been brought forward from 23 February to 9 February 2020, though the eligibility dates for Oscar releases and the voting period will remain the same. The next ceremony will be the 91st Academy Awards.
The new Popular Film category is bound to be controversial, even before concrete details about it have been confirmed. While it should help to close the gap between the habits and tastes of cinemagoers and the films celebrated by the Academy, the division between ‘Popular Film’ and ‘Best Picture’ could prove a sticking point. Either way, expect this to shake up the Oscar race in future.www.empireonline.com/movies/news/oscars-creating-popular-film-category-academy-awards-reform/

Then they just switch it up the category names to "Best Movie Everyone Saw" and "Best Movie Only Dracula Saw."
Now if only they would accept my suggestion for "Least Shitty Direct to Video Film" we would be all set.

Awful, pathetic decisions by the consistently gutless Academy.
What a useless award. You think that people are going to care and tune in now that a category that holds no merit has been created? That it will appeal to people tired of the Academy snobbery? Of course it won't, what do they care if Avengers: Infinity War or Black Panther win the award?
The problem with the Oscars isn't the time dedicated to technical achievements, which is also horribly insulting to the many men and women who work their asses off (more than most actors and actresses do, that's for sure) to make the movies great (what is Dunkirk without its expert sound editing/mixing? What is any movie without these? It's insulting!), the problem is their uninspired musical numbers, pat-themselves-on-the-backs segments in-between the awards, and inability to make showing the clips of these films make viewers want to seek them out.
It's another case of the Academy not looking at themselves as the issue but looking for gimmicks to attempt to appease casual moviegoers. The Oscars are the only awards show I force myself to watch, but I don't really enjoy watching it. With this step they've gotten far closer to the MTV Movie Awards. Pathetic.

And to Dracula's point, how is this even determined? Titanic was the "popular film" of the year, but also worthy of Best Picture. Same with The Return of the King, and countless others.
Is it based solely on box office performance? Is it a way to dance around rewarding a movie like Avengers: Infinity War a Best Picture nomination while giving it a useless "congrats on the money you made!" award instead? No matter what criteria they make up, it's a useless and trivial act that won't make moviegoers who dislike the snobbery of the Oscars change their opinion, and will only aggravate cinephiles and people working in the industry.

The biggest outrage is that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen missed out on its chance at this Oscar. SMH

As I've said a kazillion times, there was an era in which the Best Picture winner was actually a popular movie. Nowadays the Oscars are just a commercial for small movies that people don't give a shit about. If the Best Popular Film award had existed in 2010 and Inception had won, while King Speech won "Best Picture", we would know which are the real and fake awards. Where's the Best Stunt award? ?

Though if I were to make a mildly serious post, I think it's interesting to note that the very first Acadamy Awards had two Best Pictures, one of "Outstanding Picture" (Wings) and another for "Artistic Merit" (Sunset). This kind of reminds me of that, though more pandering. Maybe that's why I don't give a shit, because it seems like the two awards switched places a bit. But then again maybe that duo award ended after one ceremony for a reason.
I don't know if it said this anywhere, but it seems a lot of people are claiming that since this category is introduced that means these certain films can't be nominated for both. If anybody stated that anywhere then I must have missed it. What I do know is that being nominated for Animated didn't prevent Toy Story 3 and Up from being nominated for Best Picture. Though it sure aa hell didn't make their winning the Animated award such a surprise.
I remember Richard Roeper said in an interview once that he believed the Oscars should work in genre categories, such as an award for drama, one for comedy, one for fantasy/sci-fi, one for action, or whatever else. That might have been a neat move, and at the end of the night you could pit the winners against each other in a Best Picture vote. I think that would be fun, personally.
But the Oscars aren't fun, damnit! Moving pictures is very serious business!
