We'll know for sure after the Golden Globes. 4 years ago, everyone was certain that The Social Network would win Best Picture. 9 years ago, Crash wasn't even being discussed. This is why Dracula is still on edge. Well "The Social Network" should've won and "Crash" is a piece of shit so he has every right to be. I'm totally fine with either "Boyhood" or "Birdman" winning even though I'm a bit more partial to "Boyhood", but if another movie wins Best Picture then that's pure bullshit on the Academy. Inception should have won, but it'll be a long time till the Academy acknowledges another blockbuster in the top category.

I've seen Goodbye to Language. It doesn't deserve to be there. The Immigrant and Two Days, One Night are both infinitely better.

Fellini and Visconti are both dead. Godard is in his 80's.

That would be pretty hilarious, a bunch of old auteurs trying to remain hip and trendy in the digital cinema age. Goddard is the only one of those still kicking, but maybe they can have Lars von Trier as the bad guy, I could see that working quite well.

They've put posters up for Goodbye to Language at some of my local theaters. I'm as shocked as anyone that Goddard is still around.

I've heard mixed about the use of 3-D. Some say it's amazingly inventive, while other are complaining that it gave them a headache. As for the story, there isn't much of one--it's completely incomprehensible. Godard apparently lost his mind somewhere in the 70's.

I guess that means that everyone on the Criterion Collection facebook page is going to gush how it's the best movie of the decade.

I haven't seen any of his work outside of the '60s and '70s, but I've heard he's made some good stuff since (here and there). Goddard is difficult, but he's also a badass and I'll watch anything the guy puts out there good or bad.

That's because nobody cares. The Oscar movies that people wanted to see (Boyhood, Birdman, Gone Girl, Nightcrawler) were released ages ago. All that's left is American Sniper and Foxcatcher. Nobody cares about The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Unbroken, Wild, and Cake. Nobody knows what Whiplash is. It's something about a drummer. The Grand Budapest Hotel is already on HBO and Redbox and VOD. Big Eyes came and went. Selma will probably attract an audience, but it's not a movie people are hyped to watch. Overall, this is a shit year for the Oscars. Yeah, there will be a few standout movies getting honored, but they were released so early into the year that people just don't care anymore. That's why I suggested the Oscars go crazy this year and start nominating movies people wouldn't expect. Spice things up. Get people's attention again. Put some energy into the ceremony.

You seem to have some very confident notions of what "people" care about. Also, Foxcatcher has been out for well over a month.

If you really believe people are forming long lines to watch The Imitation Game, then you're delusional. I'll give you Unbroken. That made more money than anyone anticipated, but that was mostly older audiences. No one under 40 is gonna watch Unbroken except people like you who need to watch every Oscar nominated movie.

The theater I saw The Imitation Game in seemed pretty crowded, and old people's money is just as green as young people's money.

Old people are closer to death and aren't gonna obsesse over the movie. 10 years from now, we'll still be talking about Nightcrawler. 10 MONTHS from now, people aren't gonna even remember The Imitation Game or The Theory of Everything or Unbroken or whatever other cliche biopic will win an Oscar this year.
