I almost believe Manchester should be Best Picture over LLL just because it really had it all - acting, superb writing, direction, cinematography, etc. It was just a well-made film on every level, and possibly even above critique.

No surprises really. Tornado mentioned on Facebook the lack of a nod for Amy Adams but I wasn't all that surprised. Looks like a strong-ish year for leading ladies.
Streep would get nominated for playing a park bench.

Wow, they're really sticking with this Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge thing. And how is Dev Patel considered 'supporting' actor for Lion? It's his movie.

I never thought I'd see Mel nominated for an Oscar again.
I'm a little surprised to see no nod for Michael Keaton. Not that The Founder was all that great but it was a movie and a role tailor-made to get one.
And is it time to go back to 5 Best Picture nominees yet?

is it time to go back to 5 Best Picture nominees yet? Probably. 2010 is the only year it felt justified and they still managed to fuck it up.

Uh damn, the Academy is really over slurping Hacksaw Ridge. Yeah I just watched it yesterday, I don't get it. War scenes are pretty good but other than that I thought it was actually kind of bad.

Haven't seen five out of the nine yet (Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Lion, Moonlight), but I saw Hidden Figures this past weekend and wile it was by no means a bad movie, it was very much that typical, safe kind of race-related Oscar bait film that I knew was going to get nominated as I was watching it. I'm glad the story of it was finally told in a film, but it's so by the numbers in terms of execution.
But there are no big surprises here as far as I can see. Though it's curious Silence got virtually snubbed. I wanted to try and see that, but after just one week, the showtimes have gone down to just once-a-night showings and the earliest is at 9 p.m.
Lion honestly didn't look THAT interesting to me, but of course, look who's behind it...

I'm not all that familiar with him but from what I've heard so far it sounds a bit too god-loving for my liking. Kinda neat that he won without a major label though.

Chance and Anderson.Paak are the future.
I missed the Tribe tribute, and the Metallica/Gaga microphone fuckup.
A music critic acquaintance of mine didn't take too kindly to Bruno Mars, calling it "a poor attempt at dress-up." Then I remembered that all music critics are assholes.
