We know you wanted Mad Max to win. That would have been decidedly preferable, that would have at least been a unique and interesting choice. The good news though is that I suspect that Spotlight will win SAG and that Mad Max or The Revenant will then win the DGA, leading to no clear predictive consensus leading into the Oscars. Then we'd have a real race for once.

I like how the show that needed to be dragged into hiring a black woman a year ago suddenly thinks it can be smug about such things...

I like how the show that needed to be dragged into hiring a black woman a year ago suddenly thinks it can be smug about such things... SNL is a reflection of its writers. Now that they have Michael Che and a bunch of other Black writers, they should be allowed to make sketches about race. In its first 5 seasons, the only Black castmember was Garrett Morris and the show RARELY made sketches about racism and inequality. But as soon as Eddie Murphy becomes the star in season 6, SNL suddenly becomes the predecessor to In Living Color, Chappelle Show and Key & Peele.

The Big Short is the least deserving of all the nominees.

www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/oscar-voter-diversity-push-is-858695I do agree with this person that the push to be more 'racially inclusive' is quite ageist. The faces of the Academy are so desperate to shed the 'old white male' image that they come out with these absurd new guidelines in the hopes that it will change...what? There are thousands of Academy members and now some of them aren't going to be eligible anymore? What for? That doesn't automatically mean that the voting is going to become more diverse. This is yet again another nonsensical, knee-jerk reaction from people who panicked when The Internets called them 'racist.' Yeah there are puss cakes like Matt Damon who say 'ohh it's shameful' and all that (funny you bring this up now Matt and not previously, I wonder if that has to do with your embarrassing Project Greenlight snafu) but they're only trying to make themselves look good. If these millionaire actors and filmmakers like Damon or Jada Pinkett-Smith are so concerned why don't they themselves produce more films with black people (FYI coming from Los Angeles, the definition of diversity over here is black and/or gay, that's all)? That's right, they won't, they'll just pat themselves on the back while accusing an organization of being too old and white.

You were probably thinking of Ennio Morricone. He has zero Oscars - except for his Lifetime award in 2007. He's the one who's gonna win cause the Oscars "owe him one."

Doomsday Dracula SnoBorderZeroThe Eddies Best Editing (Drama) Mad Max: Fury Road Best Editing (Comedy) The Big Short PG CooperScreen Actors Guild are tomorrow (today). If Big Short wins, this race is over. The Directors and Writers Guild could still go in a different direction, but Big Short winning Producers, Actors and Editors gives it like a 75% chance of winning Best Picture at the Oscars. I know all eyes are on Spotlight, but is it really a major contender? The Directors Guild will VERY likely choose George Miller and in the Writers Guild it's in a different category from Big Short. I think Mad Max and Big Short are the two frontrunners with Spotlight a close third.

I think Mad Max and Big Short are the two frontrunners with Spotlight a close third. Every year we're increasingly seeing a gap in the "critics awards" which include The Golden Globes and the various regional awards and the industry awards like the guilds and the Oscars. The movies that win in both groups are the ones that are essentially compromise choices that everyone can agree on but increasingly those compromise choices have been different. We have these years where the critics groups go for movies like The Social Network and Boyhood but then the industry awards see things differently and give their awards to The Kings Speech and Birdman. This year Spotlight was the critics compromise choice, possibly because they are all journalists of sorts and they like seeing their profession get flattered and they pick up on how "authentic" it is, but the industry seems to be going for The Big Short, possibly because they all have large stock portfolios.

Alright, I just learned that this was the first year that the members of AFTRA (The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, who merged with SAG) have been able to vote on these awards... apparently a huge chunk of their membership consists of broadcast journalists... which would explain why Spotlight won.

I was rooting for Straight Outta Compton to win, just to piss off the Oscars. The Help won a few years back, so it wasn't entirely impossible.
