I predict right now The Revenant winning Best Picture/Best Director making Inarritu the first person in 65 years to win back to back Best Director Oscars.

Adam McKay is completely undeserving. The Big Short was decent but a lot of its problems stem directly from McKay's choices. He should be swapped out, either for Tarantino or Lenny Abrahamson (Room). Otherwise, it's a solid batch of nominees.

Either that or Ridley Scott will get an Oscar before he dies. That seems to be the theory right now. Adam McKay is completely undeserving. He's a great director, one of my favs but Innaritu deserves it and I think The Revenant has the momentum.

Either that or Ridley Scott will get an Oscar before he dies. That seems to be the theory right now. I'm not gonna lie, if I was in the Academy it would be tempting to vote for Scott for that very reason. Adam McKay is completely undeserving. The Big Short was decent but a lot of its problems stem directly from McKay's choices. Are these... comedic choices you didn't find funny? No. McKay tries to replicate a similar editing style as Scorsese (particularly in The Wolf of Wall Street) and is not nearly as successful. The rapid editing, cutaways, and fourth wall breaking seen in The Big Short often seem random and unneeded. On top of that, the film's realist visual style runs counter to to its broad characters and highly stylized editing. The film also has a lot of unnecessary elements (the Brad Pitt subplot, the celebrity cameos) that could have been cut, with the important bits streamlined into the rest of the film. Basically all of these things could have been improved with a better director at the helm.

I agree I didn't like the cameos, but otherwise really liked the film. Don't know about best director though.

This is the Oscars we're talking about. Inarritu won't win because he won last year.

These are great. I'm hoping Kevin James and Sandler "win" big this year. Jupiter Ascending and Fifty Shades of Grey might pull off the upset though.

The only one I've seen is Fifty Shades of Grey and that was a nonsensical piece of garbage.

I know they've been getting strong reviews, but have either Brooklyn or Room had Best Picture buzz before now? Those are the two where, when I saw them listed, I said, "Really?" Looks like I have four nominees to see: The Big Short, Brooklyn, The Revenant and Room. But out of the ones I've seen, I would've swapped out Bridge of Spies with either The Hateful Eight or Sicario.
The absence of Ridley Scott for Director is also disappointing.

Have either Brooklyn or Room had Best Picture buzz before now? Yes. And Brie Larson, whose in Room, is the frontrunner to win Best Actress.

Brooklyn and Room both have 97%+ on RT. So yeah, they're not surprises.
Sicario should've been in over Bridge of Spies.

When I saw that they were all-white nominees part of me we 'Yes! Let the firestorm begin!'
But seriously though, this is less of a reflection of the Academy and more of a reflection of the state of Hollywood that has been the situation for quite a while. When more roles are offered to minorities you'll start seeing more nominations. The Washington Post made a list of people who were 'snubbed' including John Boyega for Star Wars and Jada Pinkett-Smith for Magic Mike XL. That's kind of a reach.

Some feel that Idris Elba was snubbed for Beasts of No Nation. They could have chosen him instead of Eddie Redmayne for another Oscar bait performance.
