Have either Brooklyn or Room had Best Picture buzz before now? Yes. And Brie Larson, whose in Room, is the frontrunner to win Best Actress. Brooklyn and Room both have 97%+ on RT. So yeah, they're not surprises. Sicario should've been in over Bridge of Spies. I'm not doubting their quality at all, but it just goes to show how up-to-date I've been keeping with the buzz this year. I'm glad Brie Larson is the frontrunner, though. I haven't seen Room yet, but she blew me the fuck away in Short Term 12, and she looks just as incredible in Room.

That's true, I was surprised Redmayne received yet another nomination for yet another role where he begs for awards.

It just goes to show how up-to-date I've been keeping with the buzz this year. To be fair, almost no one has seen Room and even less people have seen Brooklyn. Unless you're a mega film fan, those movies won't be in your day-to-day conversations.

As expected, though, more theaters will start to show them tomorrow. But all the listings for Room, on average, only have about two showtimes a day per theater.
At least The Danish Girl didn't get a Best Picture nod. Now I can keep on having no interest in making an effort to see it.

Brie Larson is excellent in Room, if you thought she was great in Short Term 12 (which she was) then you'll be very pleased with Room. The son is honestly the real knockout of the film, though. He was fantastic.

I'm surprised the son in Room isn't getting the recognition he deserves. He was fantastic.

Completely agree. The whole cast was terrific in the film, but he was in a league of his own.

Hard to get too worked up one way or another on this one. That The Hateful Eight was snubbed is obviously terrible, but I'd already resigned myself to that happening. Besides that they mostly did what I expected while mercifully avoiding the baity bullshit like Trumbo and The Danish Girl.

Mad Max got quite a few nods, eh? Dracula almost jumped out his office window. It deserved most of them, I've never questioned the movie's technical prowess and they didn't do anything silly like trying to give ti screenplay or acting nominations.

It still got Best Picture and Best Director. On that note, Revenant didn't get a screenplay nomination either. Some consider that a handicap.

I know that you have this weird assumption that anytime someone expresses any misgivings about something that means they "hate" it but that is not the case, I quite like the movie, it will probably end up somewhere on the bottom half of my top ten list. I probably wouldn't have given The Revenant a screenplay nomination either, that movie is a visual feast but the dialog is functional at best, its structure is straightforward, and it isn't that thematically profound. Everything about it that works is rooted in execution rather than writing.

Idris Elba would have been considered for Best Supporting. He should have been considered, but I can understand why the Academy resisted it as a Netflix movie. I also agree with Dooms in that the nominees reflect the state of Hollywood and not so much the racial politics of the Academy.

United States of Tara. Scott Pilgrim. Don Jon. Short Term 12. The Spectacular Now. Community. Trainwreck. She was also a singer 10 years ago.

Spike Lee, continuing to be annoying to stay relevant because he hasn't made a movie worth watching in over 10 years. Sad.

Ok, I'll give you that. It does seem to channel the energy and political smarts that made Do the Right Thing the amazing movie that it was. My point is still that Spike Lee is only relevant still because of his absurd protests towards other filmmakers (Tarantino, Eastwood) and for being the most annoying Knicks fan in the world. He needs to focus on making films, because as a filmmaker he's been ho-hum since making his masterpiece.

Chi-Raq was a step in the right direction and he has a Michael Jackson documentary around the corner.
