Dracula PG Cooper SnoBorderZeroThe Golden Globes put The Martian in the comedy/musical category. Doesn't that pretty much guarantee a Best Picture nomination and a possible Best Actor win for Matt Damon? I don't know what that'll mean for the Oscars, it might not mean anything at all, but it's certainly interesting. Worst case scenario, this could be the most awards love The Martian gets. Matt Damon wins Best Actor (Comedy) for The Martian.

Cool choice. Before you get your hopes up for Oscars, remember that the Globes didn't go for Birdman like the academy did so they had making up to do with Inarritu.

I've only watched a couple clips so far but wow that Amy Schumer/Jennifer Lawrence bit was painfully unfunny. Even the crowd's reaction was mixed at best. But as usual social media is calling it 'amazing!' because WOMYN!
I'll be politically incorrect for a moment but what I don't get is that people complain how there aren't enough women in comedy, then we get force-fed people like Amy Schumer who are popular solely because they're women. It's a weird cycle.

It's a weird cycle. I'll agree that some of the hype around Amy Schumer is a bit excessive and some of that might be out of a "politically correct" desire to support women comedians but to say that Schumer is popular solely because she's a woman if patently ridiculous. She's popular because her show is funny and so was Trainwreck. There's a reason why that movie was well liked and other female centric comedies like Hot Pursuit and Sisters didn't.

She came into the picture doing standup that would have relegated her to open mics in dive bars had the same sets been done by a man. Her show has writers who deserve as much credit as she does but if she had been born with a penis she (he) wouldn't be anywhere.

I can't say I'm overly familiar with her early standup, but the show and movie that have made her famous are funny and she deserves credit for both. You're entailed to feel differently about the merit of her work but to insist that there's some wild conspiracy to make people enjoy her work is pretty silly. No offense, but you have kind of a history of "not getting" a lot of very popular comedy by male comedians of the Seth Rogen school as well so maybe the disconnect has more to do with your unique taste in comedy than "political correctness run amok."

There's a difference between not getting something and not being overly fond of dick/fart/weed jokes repeated ad nauseum. There's not a whole lot 'not to get' with the movies in that vein. I give Seth Rogen et al. as much credit as they deserve when they deserve it. If anything, it's his legitimately funny movies like Observe and Report that seem to go over peoples' heads. Not enough cum jokes for the hoi poloi I guess.
As for Schumer, yeah, there is a concerted effort to 'make things PC' so to speak, even in comedy and especially in entertainment overall. Look at SNL. There was an phony outcry from Jezebel or some rag that 'there weren't enough women of color' involved with the show. A 'special' casting call specifically for black women was held and boom, just like that Sasheer Zamata was added to the cast and Leslie Jones was brought on as a writer, later moved to a cast member. Sure they deserve some credit but they were cast primarily because they were specifically looking for black female talent. Why? Because nowadays you just gotta have it. If you don't it wouldn't be....well you know the term. Schumer applies. I'm sure you have access to HBO Go or HBO Live. Go watch a few minutes of her standup at the Apollo. Maybe you'll find it funny. I doubt it but maybe.

If anything I think Any Schumer has become more tame than her better early stuff.
She becomes painfully unfunny to watch when she's limited by network suits, but she's still cool in my book. Any woman that could give shit back to Patrice Oneal is alright.

Inarritu, The Revenant Tom McCarthy, Spotlight Adam McKay, The Big Short George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road Ridley Scott, The Martian Spotlight is still in the game. Adam McKay moves up the ladder. But the race is between Inarritu, Miller and Scott. Will that also be true at the Oscars? We'll know in a couple of days.
