I'm planning on seeing Spotlight soon. I could have seen it a week ago, but I was waiting to see how it played out during awards season. All the screenings where I live are in the evening, when adults usually go to the theater, and post-matinee tickets are now $12. That's very expensive for a movie that doesn't get extra value from the big screen. It's a movie about a newspaper. You can watch it at home, with your HD TV, and it would make no difference. I think Hollywood is starting to realize that and it's why they put no effort into the theatrical release. Room, for example, is barely in theaters. They just use the Oscars and the other awards to promote the rentals. That's all that awards season is now - a giant commercial.

I'm still of the mind that you just can't beat the theater experience when it comes to movies. Blu-ray/HD is awesome, but it's just something about the atmosphere of a movie theater -- assholes who refuse to turn off their cell phones aside. That's why I have no problem seeing small movies like Spotlight in their theatrical runs. That, and I want to be in the awards conversation, so I need to see the movies.
Spotlight is playing at the local indie theater here, and now one of the multiplexes. I was originally going to go to the indie theater today -- they only have matinees on weekends -- but I was too busy, so now I'll be seeing it someday this week at the bigger theater.

Spotlight probably wouldn't benefit immensely from the theatrical experience, but I do take issue with the notion that the only movies that "need" to be seen in the theaters are effects blockbusters. To me the movies that really "need" the theatrical experience are the ones with subtler nuances and atmosphere. The ones that you really need to pay attention to and which you don't want the many distractions of home viewing taking you away from the proceedings.

I do take issue with the notion that the only movies that "need" to be seen in the theaters are effects blockbusters. That's not necessarily true. Sicario was a great theater experience. Those landscape shots of Mexico. The music. It really played well. The theater can be distracting too. People talking. Cellphones. Baby's crying. etc. But I get what you mean.

To Pimp a Butterfly is a little overhyped (Section.80 remains my favorite Kendrick Lamar album by far) but it's pretty plainly the most accomplished of the nominees. Haven't listened to the Weeknd album in its entirety but I like all the singles off it. 1989 is obviously the most popular of the year and a couple of the singles off of it proved to be surprisingly tolerable. Minimal interest in the other two.
As for the singles categories. Kendrick should obviously win Song of the Year given that Alright has becomes something of an anthem in the Black Lives Matter movement (even if that wasn't necessarily the intention). Beyond that, yeesh, the Taylor Swift song might be my second choice. See You Again got old fast and that Ed Sheeran song is secretary rock bullshit. The other song is a country song so fuck it. In Record of the Year I'd probably lean Weeknd. Uptown Funk was good by people went a big overboard on it and it wasn't an extended cocaine metaphor. The D'Angelo song is also quite good, glad it got nominated.
