Dracula PG Cooper SnoBorderZeroThe Golden Globes put The Martian in the comedy/musical category. Doesn't that pretty much guarantee a Best Picture nomination and a possible Best Actor win for Matt Damon? I don't know what that'll mean for the Oscars, it might not mean anything at all, but it's certainly interesting. Worst case scenario, this could be the most awards love The Martian gets. Although the Martian isn't a full on comedy, it has enough humor to qualify as a comedy. So the question now is, how good is David O. Russell's Joy? And does The Hateful Eight have enough humor to qualify as a comedy too? The Golden Globes are gonna be interesting this year.

Speaking of which, with the exception of The Fighter, all of O. Russell's movies have been in the Comedy category. Even if Joy isn't a comedy, the Globes might put it there so Jennifer Lawrence has a strong chance of winning Best Actress.

I take criticisms of "too long" with a grain of salt. There are plenty of examples of films which should be shorter, but in this age it seems that any film that's over two hours automatically is labelled "too long". I'm not sure if it comes from a generation of cell phone users with endless media at their fingertips, but it's a sentiment I've rarely shared. I'm more than willing to be patient and take my time with a movie.

Doomsday Dracula PG Cooper SnoBorderZero DeexanSight & Sound was super impatient this year. They already released their list of the best 2015 movies. 1. The Assassin (Taiwan) 2. Carol (UK / US) 3. Mad Max: Fury Road (US / Australia) 4. Arabian Nights (Portugal) 5. Cemetery of Splendor (Thailand) 6. No Home Movie (France) 7. 45 Years (UK) 8. Son of Saul (Hungary) 9. Amy (UK) 10. Inherent Vice (US), technically a 2014 movie

PG CooperJoy got its first awards screening last night. The reception, from what I can tell on Twitter, is a lot better than The Revenant which turned off some viewers due to violence. That means nothing, of course. Oscar voters are generally old white people. Audiences may react differently, but it does paint an early picture of where award season is heading. Jennifer Lawrence, in particular, is being singled out because she plays the character from her youth until her 40's. Will there be make up involved? I have no idea. The main criticism for her performance in American Hustle was that she wasn't believable as someone over 30. Has that been rectified in Joy or are people gonna laugh at the idea of Jennifer Lawrence playing a woman in her 40's. And how will actresses react to Jennifer Lawrence, who's only 25, playing 40-something? I feel like there will be some sort of backlash around the corner. Either way, Joy is going to be a major player this season. O. Russell's streak continues.

I've heard rumors that Lawrence will be running a sort of anti-campaign to quietly discourage people from voting for her because she's afraid that getting "too much too soon" could lead to a backlash. They say she did the same thing with Hustle because of that and because beating Lupita Nyong'o would have looked bad for her.

People thought her role was a joke and the weakest part of the movie. The internet even turned her scenes into meme's. The same could happen now with her playing a woman in her 40's. But on the other hand, it is a super weak year. Can you name me 5 actresses who are worthy of a Best Actress nomination? And don't start pulling names from non-English speaking movies. This is the Academy Awards. Getting just one of those is a rarity. So, Lawrence, love it or hate it, will be a major contender. It's the flashiest female performance we're getting this year.

Unfortunately, Juliette Binoche's awesome work in Clouds of Sils Maria will probably be ignored.

Worthy or likely? Brie Larson in Room, Juliette Binoche in Clouds of Sils-Maria (which is at least 85% in English), Cate Blanchett is apparantly amazing in Carol, Saoirse Ronan is supposed to be really good in Brooklyn, Lily Tomlin in Grandma is well liked, and so is Charlotte Rampling in 45 Years.

Yeah. I guess that's the better question: worthy or likely. Of the ones you mentioned, only 2 or 3 are likely. I think Brie Larson and Cate Blanchett are the only sure bets, with Jennifer Lawrence taking the 3rd spot. The next two are wild cards.

Dracula PG CooperI'm reading the conversations in other sites. People seem to think it'll be Jennifer Lawrence vs Brie Larson. The argument is that Lawrence has the edge because it's a one-woman-show while Larson had her young co-star, Jacob Tremblay, to bounce off of. Like I said, Lawrence has the flashier performance. That's no guarantee though. People also seem to champion Cate Blamchett and Saoirse Ronan. But as of right now, the consensus seems to be Lawrence vs Larson, who coincidentally, are both young and blonde and play a character named Joy. You know Chris Rock is already writing some jokes about this.

Before you get too high on Mad Max's prospects, keep in mind that the NBR is infamous for being Warner Brothers' bitch, like to the point where I'm surprised they didn't start throwing awards at fucking Black Mass.

I haven't seen Spotlight but anything that could get Michael Keaton an Oscar will get my support. Screw Eddie Redmayne. Screw him. Screw him.
