Do you think they ignore a movie automatically that was released in 2013, even if it wasn't in release here until 2014? Have they already forgotten it? Other than "Casablanca", a 1942 film released in December that won the 1943 Best Picture, I can't think of a movie that wasn't totally forgotten by the next year.

I meant it should have been nominated in those categories. I know it wasn't. Maybe. Snowpiercer is the movie that got fucked royally. I'm still shocked it didn't AT LEAST get nominated for Make-Up. Did the Oscar not realize that was Tilda Swinton as the old lady? And for the record, Tilda Swinton should have been nominated. That is a snub that nobody is bitching about. Some other movie had the whole old tilda swinton thing covered

Snowpericer was over-rated.
It had an interesting concept, but was executed terribly

The VFX Predictinator, 87th Academy Awards Edition PERSONALLY, I thought “Interstellar” had a slight edge in the race. “Gravity”, like “Interstellar”, also featured large-scale, impressive space visual effects. Like “Gravity” (which was up against big superhero, sci-fi and fantasy blockbusters), “Interstellar” is arguably the most ‘important’, least spectacle-based, thought-provoking film of the nominees, and the film most likely to garner additional Academy Award nominations. “Interstellar” is a vote that would make Academy voters feel ‘good’. It’s the classy choice, versus choosing comic book films or sequels.

Snowpiercer probably deserved to get in for Art Direction, but otherwise I can't say it was snubbed. Tilda Swinton is awful in that movie.

Yeah, I don't get all the love for Snowpiercer. It was an entertaining B movie, that's about it.

In hindsight, it's not that great. It's entertaining conceptually, but the execution is manic and goofy.

Yeah. Plus it was trying way to hard. That stupid monologue at the end was trying so hard to make it me convince this is a deep movie.
I had already checked out at that point.

I didn't think about it before. Michael Keaton is the only Best Actor nominee this year who played a fictional character. That raises the question: why did the Oscars have a hard-on for biopics this year? Jake Gyllenhaal and Ralph Fiennes should have been nominated. And replace Benedict Cumberbatch with the guy who played MLK in Selma. That would have been a much more diverse list.
This year's Oscars have no imagination when you think about it. They went for the laziest and most bland options.

I really think there should be a separate category for actors who portray a non-fictional character, like how they have best adapted and original screenplay categories.

It creates a very well-realized environment and society, features a very rare strong performance from Chris Evans (Tilda Swinton's pretty good, too), has some excellent action sequences and some interesting ideas at play near the end. I re-watched it on Blu Ray a few weeks ago and my opinion of it still holds up.

I really think there should be a separate category for actors who portray a non-fictional character, like how they have best adapted and original screenplay categories. That probably wouldn't work because people would argue that some characters are too fictional. Like Bradley Cooper in American Sniper. I'll step up to bat for Snowpiercer; it's a pretty awesome movie. I can't defend the screenplay but the movie is definitely well-made. The CS! hatred for Snowpiercer is silly.

And replace Benedict Cumberbatch with the guy who played MLK in Selma. That would have been a much more diverse list. This year's Oscars have no imagination when you think about it. They went for the laziest and most bland options. Steve Carrell is technically playing a real person, but it's a little different. Very few people know or particularly care what John Du Pont looked and sounded like, so he's being recognized more for his performance than for his mimicry and the movie isn't really a biopic at its heart. You're right though that biopics seemed to really take over this year, three of the five best actress nominees are also based on real people. It's kind of an easy genre to build consensus around. Also, CS doesn't "hate" Snowpiercer, we just don't love it and think it's kind of uneven. It's a weird jumble of ideas, some of them work and some of them don't.

Very few people know or particularly care what John Du Pont looked and sounded like, so he's being recognized more for his performance than for his mimicry. He put on a funny nose and did a weird voice. It's obvious he's trying to mimic someone. That's very different from Michael Keaton, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ralph Fiennes who had to create original characters from scratch. I'm not discrediting actors who play real people. That takes skill too. I'm just saying that the Oscars went over-board with biopics this year. There should be more of a balance.

DoomsdayDraculaPG CooperSnoBorderZeroJustinCritics love Boyhood and have showered it with many awards. But there was always a suspicion that industry people would relate more to Birdman and that became a reality last night when the Producers Guild gave Birdman the Best Picture award. Birdman is now the frontrunner at the Oscars. The Screen Actors Guild Awards is tonight on TNT.

That's a hell of a coup, the PGA is the only of the guild awards that uses the Academy's preferential ballot system. They've matched up with the Oscar choice every year since 2007 (although there was a tie last year so that could have easily blown their streak).
Anyway I think the SAG awards will tell us a lot. If Boyhood wins, game over, that means the actors branch loves it so much that they were willing to overlook the fact that there were only four people in the cast and two of the were non-professionals. If The Imitation Game wins, game over, it means the acting branch loves the movie despite some largely average work by the supporting actors. If Birdman wins, that will be a huge boost in its momentum but not necessarily a game over, that's definitely an "actor's movie" and sag's support might not necessarily speak to a larger respect within the academy and may have been entirely responding to the fact that it had an impressive set of stars spitting banter. If The Grand Budapest Hotel wins (which it may out of the sheer size of the cast and the number of stars in it), then look out because this race is wide open. Oh and if The Theory of Everything wins then... this will officially be a strange year.

Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) beat Michael Keaton at the SAG Awards.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
