I'm settled in nice and comfy with my love of Forrest Gump. No light to be seen there, since I'm already basking in it.

I’m not one to defend Forrest Gump. Fuck that movie. But I was always under the impression it was about a retarded guy who slept walked through history. An inspirational story. Not some right-wing manifesto.

There's a very, very personal reason why I love Forrest Gump so much and connect with certain aspects of the material so strongly, and no amount of analyzing/breaking down of it will ever succeed in convincing me otherwise. No offense or disrespect meant, PG Cooper and Dracula.

Not some right-wing manifesto. The right wing manifesto argument has always struck me as ridiculous. PG Cooper might be too young to realize that many of those hippies from the 60’s either became sellouts in the 80’s or lifelong burnouts. Jenny’s character isn’t necessarily far fetched. The issue here is that both her character and Forrest himself come across as cartoon characters. They’re both too unrealistic to be taken seriously. Which also speaks to the movie itself. I’ve never quite understood what the point of the movie is. You can say it’s “boomer nostalgia” but it’s too detached from reality to really work that way. I think the movie is ultimately about an autistic guy who found himself in some extraordinary situations. It’s the only thing that makes any sense. This movie was made in the aftermath of Rain Man and My Left Foot and other similar movies. It’s Oscarbait nonsense.

I don't think the movie is a right wing manifesto, but it is an affirmation of "American Values". The stated goal was that Forrest represent pure America and Jenny represent the opposite. The fates of each tells you what the film thinks of both. And there's definitely something to be said about the hippie generation selling out, but the film is so detached from the actual content of what any of the social movements or events it depicts were actually about that it can't really go there. It's all aesthetics, no substance.

Like you said, he spends the whole movie trying to win Jenny and then she dies. I think the “box of chocolates” is what the movies ultimate theme is. You have no control. You just have to deal with whatever life gives you.

I wasn't going to say anything but, that was kind of one of the arguments in the video that kind of made me say "wait a second" because there probably are plenty of shades of truth in the notion that there were some pretty toxic elements in the hippie movement and that living a Jenny-like lifestyle during the 60s would legitimately have sucked and such disillusionment among people like that was real. But where the movie goes wrong is that it gives her conservative counter-parts, Lieutenant Dan, this whole redemption arc that ultimately ends in happiness while Jenny is killed off for her sins while also basically making this argument that being a down the middle guy who keeps his head down and doesn't ask questions like Forrest is some kind of model for a happy life.

That the hippie movement was rampant with misogyny and many did grow to be disillusioned is certainly true. I'm not bitter that the hippies got the shaft. What irks me is the way the film more generally dismisses any alternative life styles or challenges to the status quo as these misguided aberrations. Just be nice and follow the rules and you'll be okay. The other issue is the film is largely disconnected from the actual values of any of the people or events it depicts. Its primary concern is just reproducing elements of American culture the audience will recognize.

The novel is a bit more biting from what I hear, and they reference the movie in the sequel.

The novel is a bit more biting from what I hear, and they reference the movie in the sequel. I watched a bonus feature on the Blu-Ray for research about the adaptation where the author talks about how they sanded off the edges of his character and story. He mentions for example, how in the novel when asked how he'd describe Vietnam, Forrest responds with something like "It was shit". But then by the time the movie was made in 1994 the filmmakers didn't feel like they needed to make that sort of statement. Dude also talks about people asking him to sign copies of the book with "Life is like a box of chocolates" even though he never wrote that line. He seems to kind of resent the movie (or at least that it's eclipsed his novel), but also love the money the movie got him.

Not surprising. Most author's hate adaptations of their work.

Not surprising. Most author's hate adaptations of their work. I know my Dad read the book (my parents love the movie) and I don't think he cared much for it. He might actually still have it somewhere.

The worst thing about the video is PG Cooper shitting on Doomsday ’s masterpiece Ready Player One. That movie might be some nerd shit but it’s better than both Forrest Gump and Benjamin Button. Yeah, no shitting on Ready Player One Coop. Leave that to me.

No offense or disrespect meant, PG Cooper and Dracula . None taken. Good video, as always. But to echo what Ian said, we're just on very different wavelengths on Forrest Gump. Benjamin Button, you can go to town on.

SnoBorderZero named Murnau's Faust as his #1 movie watch of July and coincidentally I came across this video today. Nothing groundbreaking and certainly not Eyebrow Cinema level but it's a fun watch on Nosferatu.

I'm particularly interested in the Robert Weine movie The Hands of Orlac.
