So in your perfect world how does one respond to this? The writers set it up to kill off Roseanne's character. Just have her OD on pain pills. John Goodman could carry this show on his own. The last episode where he punches the wall in frustration as the basement is flooding is fantastic.

It would still force them to pay her. The show must die.

Nah, ABC is owned by Disney, guess what else they're about to own.

Nah, ABC is owned by Disney, guess what else they're about to own. Technically the Fox network is not a part of that deal (something about conflict of interest with ABC), though the higher ups at 20th Century Fox who own it in the meantime have already applauded the show's cancellation.

Where does FOX News fit in to all of this? It's a separate entity, or...?

Fox News isn't part of the deal because it's the big money maker and Rupert doesn't want to part with it. Fox Sports isn't part of the deal because Disney already owns ESPN, and there aren't enough competitors for big sports networks to make regulators happy. The Fox Broadcasting Network isn't part of the deal because Disney already owns ABC.
FX and FXx (and any other basic cable stations owned by Fox that I'm forgetting) are included, since there's no shortage of basic cable channels showing a combination of reruns and original content.

As for whether or not Roseanne can continue without their title character, the answer is yes. It's been done before. Valerie Harper (The Mary Tyler Moore Show/Rhoda) had a sitcom on NBC in 1986 called Valerie. The show was about Valerie Hogan raising three boys (Jason Bateman and two other kids whose names are of no consequence) while her husband was almost always away from home as an airline pilot. It was very popular for two seasons, and then Harper decided she wanted a huge raise, and figured she had NBC over a barrel. After all, they couldn't possibly make the show without her, right? Well, NBC decided to see if it could be done. Season three of the show opened with a new title (Valerie's Family) and began with Valerie's husband and children returning home from her funeral! The husband's sister moved in to help everyone deal with their mom's sudden death (played by Sandy Duncan) and the show continued on until 1991, with Jason Bateman's character taking over the focus for the show.

Another example the the Cosby Show spinoff, A Different World, that was create as a vehicle for Lisa Bonet's character. Then Bonet became pregnant and was kicked off the show its first season, so the show's supporting characters pretty much became its ensemble cast for five more years.
And while quality of the final seasons might be debatable, both Happy Days and The Office survived the loss of their lead character and lasted a respectable amount of seasons further.
And then there's the idea of format change, like transitioning All in the Family into Archie Bunker's Place. I don't think many fondly remember the latter all that much, but it still lasted four yeara, and coupled with All in the Family that pushed that particular series to a whopping 13 seasons.
Like I said before, I'm all for a shifted focus on Darlene, and if Dan and Jackie were to stay on the show that's even better. Still there would be the stench of PR stigma on the show and it probably wouldn't get the same ratings. That's purely hypothetical of course.

The Hogan Family Yes, the title did eventually transition from Valerie's Family to The Hogan Family. I think there was even a network change at some point.

The Hogan Family Dont mind him, he's speaking Canadian.

Yeah he wants an apology when he's spouted a lot of vile insults directly at many many targets and has NEVER apologized for anything in his life. Get a grip, Trump!

I'm reminded of the book what happened to Kansas, and a lesser extent the ideas behind the documentary the brainwashing of my dad. It is terribly sad. But I'm not going to pretend like things will change even when that generation largely dies off. These roads weren't even paved in good intentions. But they were paved nonetheless.

New story of the day is Samatha Bee calling Ivanka Trump a 'fecklass cvnt.' Now the other side of the aisle is calling for her firing even after she apologized.
And who says women aren't as funny as men?
