First things first, I'm considering this board a safe space and I'm kind of putting myself out there on this one, please don't laugh or anything.
So as some of you may know I've been a non-drinker for my entire adult life for a variety of nerdy/possibly insane reasons but recently I've been making some efforts to move away from some of my crazy idiosyncrasies and become a little more normal. I have zero intentions of drinking anything to the point of drunkeness but I want to stop being the weirdo who flat-out refuses drinks in social situations. As such I semi-impulsively went to a liquor store today and bought a six-pack of Heineken bottles and a bottle of red wine so I could get used to the stuff in the privacy of my own home without an audience.
Anyway, I'm trying some of the beer now and... I think it tastes like poison. Like, it will taste kind of tolerable when it's in the front of my mouth but I'm overwhelmed by its awful bitterness and I kind of gag swallowing the stuff. Why do people drink this shit? I had to open up a can of Dr. Pepper and use it to wash the taste out of my mouth between sips in order to finish the bottle. I know they say this stuff is an acquired taste but I had no idea it would be this extreme.
So, I guess I'm fishing for advice. Was the issue just that Heineken was a bad choice? Are there other kinds of beer out there that don't taste like weed killer? Or do I need to just suck it up and keep drinking this stuff in order to get used to it? What other kinds of liquor am I maybe better off taste testing? I'm still planning to try that red wine next time I have some Italian food, maybe that will work out better but man, this little leap into the unknown has not gone well so far.

Well, there are lots of different kinds of beer, so maybe you just need to sample some. Heineken is pretty mass market. I could tell you my favourite beers, but there's no saying you'll have the same taste. Maybe you will like hoppy beers, or amber, or dark beers like Guinness. Or maybe you just wont like beer.
One thing is for sure though, beer out of a keg tastes quite a lot better than out of a bottle or can.
You might like the wine better. Be sure to let it breathe.

I don't think Heineken is the best place to start. It's a bit...not strong, but has a very specific taste. My buddy also started drinking with that and didn't much see the appeal in drinking (something has certainly changed). I'd say you're best trying stuff like Coors Light or Rolling Rock (which the AVGN drinks), as they are lighter and will help ease you in. Stuff like Budweiser might also be good. It's not exactly good beer, but it's widely consumed because it's generally pretty drinkable.
Other than that, you just kinda gotta get used to it. Like I said, start with the lighter beers and just nurse em casually and eventually you'll (probably) come to appreciate the flavour and it'll come easier.
Good luck with the wine. My experience with wine has mostly been bad (the last time I got really sick from drinking was doing a bottle and a half in the span of like, 3 hours) but I've only drunk cheap shit so far.

Heineken is notorious for getting a "skunk" taste.
To what Ian said, the only real way you may figure out what you like is with experimenting. Stores like Wegmans or Whole Foods may be able to sell beer in your state, and if so both have the option to "mix and match" a six pack. Choose different beer styles to see what you like, but try to keep them all at under 6% ABV at least at first, do you don't get overwhelmed by the booziness. A pils, a lager, a red ale, a stout, and two others in the craft beer variety is a good jumping off point.
If you're curious as to how craft beers rank relative to others, beeradvocate.com has a pretty solid ranking system.
American lagers or pilsner can be good in certain circumstances, but really don't showcase much flavor being watered down.
And from someone who has had a DUI in the past, keeping it at home can make you over-confident when you do go out. A beer per hour is the general rule of thumb to be under the legal limit but no more than 6.

Some people don't drink. It's perfectly normal and you shouldn't feel like you're abnormal if you choose not to. If you don't like it, or it does nothing for you, then simply don't drink it. Who cares what people think?
That's my ultimate view point, anyway. If you do feel like you have to drink something to fit in better... nah, fuck it. I gagged a little writing that sentence. If someone judges you for choosing to not have an alcoholic beverage, then maybe it's better that you choose someone else to hang out with.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The most manly "lady drink" is Pina Colada. No one will judge you for drinking that. It's just pineapple juice with alcohol. Pretty much everyone drinks it at beach resorts.

Yep, all true and I don't regret my decision to skip all the wild keggers when I was younger. But I've been rethinking all my reasons for wholesale avoiding alcohol even in reasonable moderation all these years and they've started to seem kind of paranoid in retrospect. I'm not solely looking into this out of delayed peer pressure, I do sort of just want to know what I've been missing.

I'm not solely looking into this out of delayed peer pressure, I do sort of just want to know what I've been missing. Yeah, that's what I was wondering when I added my edit. If you just feel like taking a dip in that pool for the hell of it. I'll put it down below if you missed it: So maybe just a couple suggestions. Or rather, this is just simply advice from someone who doesn't drink that often, to a non-drinker. I consider myself a realist, but some people genuinely like the taste of alcohol. Being that you're not used to any of it, you probably won't ever find any alcoholic drinks that don't taste somewhat off. It tastes like poison to you because it is. Alcohol is poison. Every drink is going to taste like it has cleaner or perfume or something that shouldn't be in there to you. Firstly, let's get it out of the way. Beer tastes like crap. There's no way around it. The best tasting beers still don't really taste good, even if they taste "better". As a non-drinker, I would be highly surprised if you ever find a beer that you genuinely like the taste of. Now, I suppose if this is all about appearances sake, then this doesn't help much, but "lady-drinks" are the way to go, imo. Of the ales and malts you can find at parties, the fruity ones taste the best. Redd's Apple Ale or Mike's Hard Lemonade, for example. For over the counter, I like a Long Island Ice Tea, Amaretto Sour, or a good Mudslide. They probably have a bit more kick to them, so I guess that's bad if you're trying to avoid getting drunk, but they do taste better. Then again, I feel like it's a pointless venture to make if you're not even getting a little drunk. Doesn't taste as good as non-alcoholic drinks, costs more, and you're not even getting a buzz out of it. Just my two cents.

There is really nothing wrong with having an amaretto sour. It a nice refreshing sipper. As for beer, I could list a ton to try, but they could all have that nasty taste that makes it off putting for you. What type of red wine did you get? There is a bit of difference between the types of wine. I could even suggest a bottle of Ballatore sparkling wine to try, if anything else you can mix it with orange juice for a mimosa. Keep us posted on your journey.

*Waits patiently for a tidal wave of awesome Drunk-Drac posts*
Seriously though, hating beer first time around is perfectly natural. I remember first trying it aged 13 or 14 and thinking it was disgusting and that I'd never like it. Now I have beer for breakfast. (Just kidding. Except for Sundays.)
You might want to try having a shandy. Half pint of beer, half pint of carbonated lemonade. Then gradually reduce the amount of lemonade you're putting in over time. I was never a fan but that's how a lot of people begin their great pilgrimage to beer heaven in the UK.
Also, cider may be your jam. Kopparberg and Rekorderlig's ranges are particularly delicious to the point of not even tasting like alcohol. Dangerous in all the right ways.
Failing all of this: Sambuca.

Deexan mentioned cider so I'm gonna go ahead and mention Somersby apple cider. It tastes pretty much exactly like apple juice. Very sweet and refreshing. Now, the risk there is it goes down so well that you can get pretty drunk without realizing how much alcohol you're consuming and can end up sick (a risk with all alcoholic drinks which are really sweet) but you seem to be going into this venture and really considering each drink so I don't think you'll have that problem.

I'll throw in my two cents.
I drink however I wouldn't consider myself a drinker. I'm more of a social drinker, having beers or cocktails at parties, weddings, when out with friends, etc. I never drink otherwise although I know a lot of people do. I never come home from work and 'unwind' with a beer or have one at dinner (which never made sense to me, it just fills you up). I used to drink and party all the time but I got tired of feeling like shit for 3 days afterwards. My point is, if you don't feel like drinking then you certainly shouldn't. You're right, just about everything is going to taste like piss when you first try it but you'll notice that having a buzz is pretty cool.
You bought yourself a bottle of wine. Cool, that'll get you feeling pretty good. Just remember, PLEASE remember that the alcohol content of wine is higher than that of beer. There was a day in my life when I didn't really think that was the case and I paid a very steep price. If you have a glass of beer you'll feel okay. If you drink the same size glass of wine especially during your first experience with wine, things could go very very south. If you indulge in the wine take it easy, don't go nuts. Same goes for when you try hard alcohol, that'll get a newbie pretty wasted pretty fast.
As for hard booze, I don't know if you're quite there. The next time you're out with people or are in a bar just ask someone for a recommendation. Ask a buddy 'hey what do you think I'd like?' Personally I like whiskey, Canadian whiskey to be more specific because it's a little sweeter than scotch or other whiskeys. I'd recommend a 7 and 7 (Seagram's Seven whiskey and 7-Up) because it's easier to drink without feeling like you're drinking ash.
Also, even though we've never met in person I know you're a very practical person. You also aren't 19 anymore. If you get drunk you're going to feel like you've been hit by a bus which is natural at any point in your life but at our age you might feel like that for a couple days. For me, I just don't look forward to getting hammered on a Saturday just so I can feel thrashed on Sunday AND Monday. Sure there are special occasions but those aren't as frequent as they once were. I doubt you'll want to do the same so try to find your 'limit' as to what you can drink while feeling pretty good while not getting really drunk.
So I guess my point is that if you don't feel like drinking, don't. It's probably for the best in the long run, I have a lot of close family and friends who eff themselves because of it. Not because they're alcoholics but because some have DUIs, they do stupid stuff and hurt themselves, etc. Just stay in control, drink with people you know and trust until you get a handle on your limits and find what you like. Don't feel like you have to like everything. I hate gin. I hate scotch. I don't care for tequila. Find out what your tastes are. Find out how much you can drink. Don't drive if you've had more than 2 even if you think you're good, that's just my personal rule of thumb. Have yourself a glass of wine or two tonight and see how you feel during and after then report back to us.

I'm with you Dracula, I hate the taste of alcohol. I have tried to drink at many occasions. parties, birthdays, weddings, ect... But everytime I do I realize I hate the taste and I have no interest in consuming more since I don't want to get tipsy or drunk.
My wife on the other hand, loves the taste of beer, she will consume it not to get drunk or tipsy but for enjoys the different flavors.
My friends, and family know at this point that I don't like anything with alcohol, so they don't ask.
A lot of people don't drink you don't have to think you are weird or anything... If anyone is making you feel this way, you might consider getting them out of your life.
Everyone enjoys different aspects of life, and hobbies. I have friends who don't care for movies, but talk about sports a lot. Were still friends and have different interests, it's not a big deal.

There's so many different hipster/craft beers that you might want to start with. They have a lot of flavor unlike coors, miller, pbr and other shitty beers. Look for Traveler Grapefruit Shandy. It's really good. Personally I like IPAs that have some sort of fruit flavor to balance the hoppiness. Descheutes Fresh Squeezed IPA is yummy. I second thebtskink s advice and build your own 6 pack at the liquor store. If you want to try a cocktail that isn't girly and you like ginger go for a Moscow Mule. It's lime, ginger beer, and vodka.

I like some stouts, Blue Moon and Sam Adams Cherry Wheat and that about it. That said I don't really drink much and beer only maybe 10% of the time I do.
I tend to go for whiskeys and I really Japanese shochu in terms of preferred drinks of choice.
But just try stuff and see what you like.
