That's cool, let me know if you change your mind. I work right next to a Barnes and Noble and right next door to that is a post office.

Just imagine Ian trying to smuggle his Criterion blu-ray copy of Armageddon back into Canada.

Are you on FB and do you have Venmo/Paypal? Not sure how expensive shipping would be from California to Canada but I can pick up a couple for you if you want. Venmo? Are you a sex worker?

Hurm, that depends on how much stock you put in extra features and packaging. There's some new supplements from Criterion that are pretty insightful and I was happy to have. The real treat is the packaging through. I love the cover and the slide out case is also really nice. The set also comes with an envelope featuring an essay written on the Plan R forms from the film, a magazine style booklet featuring a piece on the film by screenwriter Terry Southern, and the credits are found in a tiny book titled "Holy Bible and Russian Phrases", which also really does include some Russian phrases translated to English. Also, I'm not an expert on these things, but the transfer did seem better this time around. Overall I'd say it's worth it.

For day one of the sale I managed to pick up The Manchurian Candidate, Dr. Strangelove, Clouds of Sils Maria, and Speedy. However, they were already sold out of The Player and Bicylce Thieves, which pisses me off. Hopefully they'll restock for when I go back later. Might check a different location later.

I just picked up The Manchurian Candidate and Brief Encounter. They were out of Dr. Strangelove but I'll get that in the next couple days. Looking to blind buy A Touch of Zen when that comes out in two weeks.
EDIT: I managed to snake Dr. Strangelove. Hoping to give those a spin this weekend.

Went to a different B&N location and picked up Bicycle Thieves and The Player. I should be set now until they release Carnival of Souls, A Touch of Zen, and The New World later this month.

I find it so odd that they have diffing transfer qualities on the different cuts of New World. That's kind of turning me off, to be honest.

I find it so odd that they have diffing transfer qualities on the different cuts of New World. That's kind of turning me off, to be honest. From Criterion's perspective the director's cut is the main attraction and the other two cuts are essentially bonus features that are included for comparison purposes. A bit like the 1.85:1 and 1.33:1 cuts of On the Waterfront that are included with the 1.66:1 main attraction.

I haven't seen The New World since it was in theaters. I didn't like it at all but at the same time maybe I wasn't as experienced in Malick's methods or mature enough to appreciate it. I won't buy it but I'll probably watch it again sometime soon.

October titles announced:
Pan's Labyrinth - October 11 Trilogia de Guillermo del Toro - October 11 Boyhood - October 18 Short Cuts - October 18 The Tree of Wooden Clogs - October 18 The Executioner - October 18
We get Boyhood which I can't imagine anyone is really clamoring for, in the meantime that means we're still waiting for the Before Trilogy to be released. Boyhood? Really?

If there are a lot of Boyhood fans I haven't run across them. Out of Linklater's movies I know people have really wanted the Before Sunrise trilogy Criterionized, I just didn't know there was a big demand for Boyhood.

Watched the Before trilogy last week.
Hard to pick a preference. I mean, in Before Midnight you can tell they've mastered the craft of acting, but it's just so damn unhopeful. And the second ends too abruptly. So Before Sunrise takes the award.
Still think 'Everybody Wants Some!!' is his best though. Need a second watch to cement it.
Watching Dazed and Confused tomorrow for the first time.

My understanding is that the current blu-ray is "decent" in the "I just want to watch the movie once and there are three puff-piece spacial features thrown in so they can have bullet points on the box" kind of way. The Criterion is going to be loaded with bonus content and despite how much I love the movie I've skipped out on the current BR because I knew this one was coming. Also let's not get too wrapped up in this narrative of Boyhood cockblocking the Before series. The reason Criterion hasn't already put that out is because the three movies were put out by three different studios and getting the rights to Before Sunset (which Warners, who only just started playing ball with Criterion at all, holds) have been particularly tricky.

I personally think Boyhood is a new American classic, I gave it a 10/10 in 2014 and stand by it still. I will absolutely pick up a Criterion version of it.

Late to the party but yes, this is what I was aiming for and honestly I didn't think people regarded Boyhood that highly. I guess I was wrong. Anyways, I think I got my Criterion pickups out of the way for the current Barnes and Noble sale. I picked up Easy Rider The Manchurian Candidate Dr. Strangelove Brief Encounter A Touch of Zen The Game I already have a mini-list going on in my head for November with McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Blood Simple and Pan's Labyrinth being released between now and then.
