I love Search for Spock, it’s one of my favorites. I still don’t know why some people have a problem with it.

I love Search for Spock, it’s one of my favorites. I still don’t know why some people have a problem with it. Well it's wedged between arguably the best liked installment in Wrath of Khan and the popular blockbuster The Voyage Home, so it loses points by comparison. Then it gets lumped into the whole even/odd thing.

I don't hate it, but its plot is just a 90 minute retcon and I don't really care.
Christopher Lloyd is great in it, though.

I still don’t know why some people have a problem with it. it's wedged between arguably the best liked installment in Wrath of Khan and the popular blockbuster The Voyage Home On the surface that's true. But the movie does nothing with the genesis project and it wastes Kirk's son. Like 1godzillafan said, it's just an odd retcon in the middle of two popular installments. If the movie had any ambition whatsoever it would have stood out more. You can't really blame the odd/even thing. They just coasted through Search for Spock. For no reason other than sheer laziness.

My whole thing is the story was built around the regret of killing off Spock at the end of Khan, so you have an uphill battle to convince me that you need an entire movie devoted to reversing the thematic conclusion of the previous film.
Search for Spock comes really close. It's on the right track by reversing that theme and turning it into a story of Kirk risking everything in his life for the small chance that he can save Spock. Throughout the film he loses the Enterprise, his son, and potentially his rank in Starfleet, all because he has one sliver of hope that his friend can be saved. Search for Spock loses me because most of this loss that Kirk has holds no real dramatic weight to me as a viewer. The Enterprise's destruction is well done, but it feels as if it's a point that has been rushed to and rushed through. David's death is an attempt to make him seem heroic by saving Saavik's life, but the problem is that we've barely knew David as a character and Kirk had barely met him himself, which makes both his death and existence in the franchise at all seem pretty pointless. David is a glorified Red Shirt. Kirk's stature in Starfleet isn't addressed by the end of the film at all, and if it weren't for some jackass alien probe with a hard on for whales in the next movie, he surely would have been reprimanded.
Search for Spock is the skeleton of a really good movie, but it just settles for being a pretty decent one. I have no problems watching it, but it rings hollow.

13. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier 12. Star Trek: Insurrection 11. Star Trek: Nemesis 10. Star Trek: Generations 9. Star Trek: The Motion Picture 8. Star Trek Beyond 7. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
6. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)
I'll admit, when I first read the basic synopsis of this movie's plot, I was concerned that it might either come off as dull or hokey (in terms of the cultural clash), but fortunately, neither was the case. Instead, the script is able to maintain the right tonal balance of keeping the stakes prevalent while incorporating comedy and more light-heartedness than the last two films. Actually, The Voyage Home kind of resembles a heist movie in a way, given how the Enterprise crew has to find a way to snatch up a whale and get it back to their time. Seeing how the crew goes about trying to accomplish their mission is interesting, plus the script peppers in some good character moments and interactions, not to mention natural flourishes of comedy, and of course those lofty Star Trek ideas. Clearly, the filmmakers were using the plot as an indictment for the state of our affairs when it comes to treating the planet right, and it never feels too heavy-handed. The Voyage Home marked a nice change of pace after two more heavily action-adventure oriented installments.

Quite possibly the funniest piece of Trek media ever made. Challenged maybe by Star Trek XII: So Very Tired.
