Norm is my all-time favorite comedian. Seriously? [/ianthecool] I'm glad I'm not the only one who really dislikes Colin Quinn. Colin was great on that Comedy Central show.

I never got George Carlin. If you find him clever then alright, that's your taste. I just don't get how he's this supreme deity in the pantheon of stand-up comedians. I've never found him that funny, everything sounds so incredibly rehearsed, he's more clever than he is anything else. I know I'm the .01% of the population who isn't a fan of him but hey sue me.

I got to go with PG Cooper and Neverending on this. George Carlin is hilarious. I used to watch his HBO specials, late 80's to mid 90's, over and over through the years and would bust a gut every time.
Dennis Leary had some classic stand-up as well in the 90's.

NEW LIST for PG CooperTHE 10 BEST MOVIES OF 1976I learned today that PG Cooper has a list of his favorite movies from 1976. He won't show it to me unless I show him mine - you know how it is - so here's MY list. #10 - THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALESBefore 1992's Unforgiven, which is an Academy Award winner for Best Picture, The Outlaw Josey Wales was highly regarded as Clint Eastwood's most prestigious western. It's about a Missouri farmer whose wife and son are killed during the Civil War and he joins the Confederate army to get revenge. On paper, the plot sounds problematic. Our hero is on the wrong side of the war! But the movie isn't racist. Women and minorities are cast in positive roles. And despite the subject matter, the story focuses more on characters and relationships than gunfights and carnage. It's Eastwood's first foray into serious filmmaking. #9 - OBSESSIONCarrie is the most popular Brian De Palma movie from 1976, and for good reasons, but I slightly prefer Obsession. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, it tells the story of a man who loses his wife and then finds her doppelganger years later. It's a movie that's both hauntingly beautiful and very disturbing. #8 - MARATHON MANWere people scared of the dentist before 1976? In Marathon Man, Dustin Hoffman plays a Ph.D. student who gets caught in the middle of a fight between a U.S. secret agent and a former Nazi. The story is effectively executed and leaves a lasting impression. #7 - ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MENBack-to-back Dustin Hoffman! All the President's Men is about the two Washington Post reporters who uncovered that U.S. President Richard Nixon was involved in the Watergate scandal. Robert Redford plays the other reporter. And although the movie is politically motivated and tells a real-life story that's widely well-known, the film succeeds because it offers an insight into the world of journalism. We always read and hear important news, but we hardly ever get to explore the steps it took to report that news. All the President's Men is much more than an historical drama and that's why it resonates. #6 - SILVER STREAKA decade before the Coen Bros made multi-genre movies their trademark, there was Silver Streak. It's the first pairing of Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor and it's easily their best. Silver Streak is a romantic drama, a wacky comedy and an action film rolled into one. Watch it and be amazed. #5 - SILENT MOVIEForget The Artist! Silent Movie is the definitive modern day silent film. Mel Brooks, fresh from his success with Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, directs and stars in this meta-comedy about a director who has to assemble an all-star cast in order to finance a silent movie. It's hilarious and one of Brooks' best. #4 - THE OMENRichard Donner's breakthrough movie is about a father who discovers that his adopted son is the spawn of the devil and must be killed for the sake of humanity. The Omen is highly-stylized and a tad over-the-top, but it's also creepy and thought-provoking and it probably gives most people goosebumps. #3 - NETWORKSatire is a powerful tool. Director Sidney Lumet and screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky use that art form to tell an outlandish story about an unpopular news anchor who becomes an overnight sensation thanks to a drunken outburst on the air. I use the word outlandish because that's what it was in 1976. In 2015, however, Network is seen as ahead of its time since it predicted what television would turn into. It's not a soapbox for the disenfranchised. It's a platform for corporations to profit from those who feel disenfranchised. Life is comedy. Don't ever forget that. #2 - TAXI DRIVERTaxi Driver is PG Cooper's favorite movie. I don't know what that says about PG Cooper, but if I lived in Canada, I would lock my door just to be safe. I kid. I kid. Taxi Driver is widely considered to be Martin Scorsese's masterpiece. I wouldn't go that far. Between Paul Schrader's depression and Scorsese's cocaine addiction, this movie is a bit questionable. But there's no denying that it's masterfully executed. #1 - ROCKYBeing the child of immigrants and having lived my entire life in the working class, Rocky is a movie that speaks to me. Rocky is not simply an underdog story. It's a movie about finding a purpose in life and achieving more than what's expected of you. When Rocky is in the ring with Apollo Creed, a man so spoiled by success that he doesn't even bother to train properly, he's not fighting another person. He's fighting for his own spiritual survival.

11 TIMES THE INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS CHOSE BETTER THAN THE ACADEMY AWARDS!There's an expression that's commonly said during awards season, "win on Saturday and lose on Sunday." That's referring to the Independent Spirit Awards, which usually take place on the eve of the Academy Awards. There have been times when both awards chose the same winner. Platoon, for example, won Best Picture at both awards. But it's generally expected that both awards will choose different winners. And here are 11 times when the Spirit Awards chose better than the Oscars. #11 - AFTER HOURS (1985)After Hours is Martin Scorsese's criminally underrated comedy about a man who's having the worst night of his life. If you haven't seen it, and I bet you haven't, I highly recommend it. And I'm not alone in praising After Hours. It won the first ever Independent Spirit Award for Best Picture. The Academy Awards, however, had a very different movie in mind for their award. Out of Africa, a romantic drama about two White people in Africa is what they chose. You have the give the Oscars credit. They're consistent. #10 - RIVER'S EDGE (1987)The Last Emperor is a visually stunning epic by Italian filmmaker, Bernardo Bertolucci, but it's also one of the most forgettable Oscar winners for Best Picture. River's Edge, the Spirit Award winner in that category, is also very obscure among the general public. So it's fair to say that both awards made bad choices that year. But I'm gonna give the Spirit Awards credit for at least choosing a movie that's actually relevant to American viewers. River's Edge is a teen drama about a group of high school students whose lives are turned upside down when a classmate murders his girlfriend. River's Edge isn't "forgotten" because it's bad. It's obscure because it's WAY ahead of its time. If the movie were released today, it would definitely make an impact. #9 - SEX, LIES AND VIDEOTAPES (1989)Sex, Lies and Videotapes isn't a great movie but almost anything is better than Driving Miss Daisy. Seriously. What the fuck were the Oscars thinking that year? #8 - PULP FICTION (1994)Pulp Fiction was also in my list of 10 times the MTV MOVIE AWARDS chose better than the Academy Awards. comingsoon.boards.net/post/3085#7 - FARGO (1996)Welcome to another edition of, "What Were They Thinking?" The Academy Awards chose The English Patient for Best Picture. The Independent Spirit Awards corrected that mistake and gave it to Fargo. There is justice in this world. #6 - MEMENTO (2001)Believe this! The Oscars have become a joke since the turn of the century. You're gonna be seeing a lot of "what were they thinking" moments throughout the remainder of this list. So in 2001 - or 2002 to be exact - the Oscars chose A Beautiful Mind as Best Picture. What?! Thankfully, there was the Spirit Awards and they gave that honor to Christopher Nolan's Memento. #5 - SIDEWAYS (2004)Clint Eastwood has his fans. I'm one of them. But come on. Sideways is definitely better than Million Dollar Baby. I know this is CS! and you guys will always choose drama over comedy, but you Google Bots out there know I'm right. #4 - BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (2005)It has been 10 years, but the memories of Crash winning Best Picture at the Oscars still haunt us. But if it helps you sleep at night, the Spirit Awards gave Best Picture to Brokeback Mountain. #3 - JUNO (2007)I love the Coen Bros and respect No Country For Old Men. But come on. Juno. It's awesome! #2 - BLACK SWAN (2010)It has been 4 years, but the memories of The King's Speech winning Best Picture at the Oscars still haunt us. But if it helps you sleep at night, the Spirit Awards gave Best Picture to Black Swan. #1 - SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (2012)Ar-go fuck yourself. Silver Linings Playbook should have won Best Picture. The one time we needed Harvey Weinstein to rig the Oscars, he failed us. To Weinstein and the Oscars,

There is no fucking way Juno is better than No Country for Old Men. I like Juno. It's a fun and clever movie, but No Country is damn near perfect.
Otherwise, most of these films are clearly better than the Oscar winning equivalent for the most part. I haven't seen The Last Emperor so I'll refrain from commenting on 87 (I have seen River's Edge though), and I also think Million Dollar Baby is slightly better than Sideways, but it's close.
