Doomsday SnoBorderZero 1godzillafan PhantomKnight PG Cooper Dracula Wonder Woman 1984 severely underperformed in China this weekend, grossing $18.7 million. It’s the lowest opening for the DCEU. To put it into greater perspective, it’s less than Mulan, which opened to $23.2 million and was considered a major flop in China. I know AT&T cares more about HBO Max than theatrical revenue, and HBO Max has seen subscriber growth in light of Wonder Woman 1984’s release on the platform, but this is terrible news for Warner Bros. If there was somewhere in the world where the movie could do business at the box office, it was China. As it stands, AT&T turned one of pre-Covid’s most anticipated movies of 2020 into a sacrificial lamb. That’s incredible. One for the history books. Meanwhile, 2020 came and went and we never got the new James Bond movie. You had one job, Apple+. I think the problem they, and other studios are having, is that the uncertainty around these release dates make it impossible to do the kind of long term advertising campaigns that normally gin up big opening weekends. |

Wonder Woman has been on bags of Dorito’s for most of the year. Can’t buy better advertisement. |

The first movie of 2021, Liam Neeson’s The Marksman opened to $3.23M. What a major difference from a year ago when 2020’s highest grossing movie, Bad Boys For Life, opened to $62M.
