The Ant-Man opening sounds low... but it's $20 million more than what the original got in its opening weekend. That's pretty much a typical MCU increase at the box office for a sequel to a franchise at Ant-Man's level of popularity.

I'm generally of the belief that you can't conclusively pass judgment on any movie without seeing it... but I make an exception for the Mama Mia movies based on the fact that any movie that extensively features the music of Abba simply cannot be good.

I saw a good chunk of the first one and it was some vile shit.

I paid $84 for a year subscription to Moviepass and so far I've seen $42 in movies. I really wish I got this a year earlier so I could have laid waste.

If nothing else MoviePass has completely freed me up to see documentaries theatrically. I have to think it has something to do with the sleeper success of RBG and Won't You Be MyNeighbor this year.

160on movies for prob 80 bucks. And I've got like a portion of my 160 bucks in amc cash back from it as well. So say add like 60 bucks on for popcorn/drinks.
220 for 80 bucks.
I don't think we are regular users though.

I don't think we are regular users though. The "regulars" are even worse. MoviePass' main audience isn't moviebuffs, it's cheapskates. MoviePass or not, I'm sure you're still very cautious of when and where you watch a movie. The average moviegoer just sees "free movie" and watches movies whenever and wherever they want. They're the ones driving MoviePass out of business. I'm sure MoviePass thought to themselves, "sure, we'll lose money in the beginning, but once life gets in the way, the average joe will be paying $10 a month without watching any movies." Problem is, if you take concession out of the equation, you've just given people cheap entertainment and an excuse to leave the house.

I'm pretty sure a bad business model is what's driving MoviePass out of business, not the moviebuffs nor the skinflints.

I'm pretty sure a bad business model is what's driving MoviePass out of business They're selling data, similar to Facebook, and they've teamed up with studios to promote movies. Where they fucked up is allowing people to watch movies everyday. If they had limited it to one-movie-per-week they might have succeeded. Look at Netflix. In the beginning, when it was just DVD rental, they had two options. You either rented one movie at a time or three movies at a time. They created those limitations so they wouldn't go bankrupt. MoviePass just took it to the extreme.

The #1 movie this weekend was..... The Equalizer? Um, okay. Caught me a bit off guard. It made $35 million. Mama Mia was close behind with $34 million. We'll have to check the final numbers tomorrow.
Opening next weekend is Mission Impossible.

As crazy as it sounds, Black Panther is still in US theaters after 23 weeks! It's been stuck at $699 million for past seven weeks, reaching $699,931,862 (estimate) this weekend. Disney appears to have convinced/threatened 126 discount theaters to put the film back on their screens this weekend for another $25,000ish in ticket sales. Only $68,138 to go!
This appears to be pure stubbornness on the part of Disney. Avengers (2012) was in theaters for 22 weeks, and made $348,638 in the week Disney chose to pull it out of theaters. Black Panther only made $13,859 in it's 22nd week, and hasn't been in the $300 thousand range since May, yet Disney is still pushing it.

Disney is pushing it because only two movies have reached $700 million domestically (unadjusted) : Avatar and The Force Awakens.

Well, Disney is going to have to do some more pushing, because the theaters are tired of running Black Panther. It's now down to only 15 theaters in the US, and made about $3,000 this weekend. If it's really that important to Disney to make $700 million now instead of in a couple of years when they can re-release it as a double feature, then it's time for the Mouse House to buy $45,000 worth of movie tickets for the under-privileged of Oakland, CA at a special screening.

M:I came in at about $60 million, which is the largest opening for the franchise if you don't adjust for inflation and the second smallest if you do (ahead of Ghost Protocol, which had a weird IMAX only first weekend).

Judging by the numbers being posted by Black Panther this weekend, it looks as though Disney finally decided to start buying their own tickets to reach $700 million. The film is only in 25 theaters at the moment, yet it is somehow making far more money than it was two weeks ago when playing in 154 theaters. Saturday & Sunday numbers haven't been posted as of the time I'm writing this, but I'd be shocked if the final weekend numbers didn't push Black Panther over the goal line.
It's about bloody time!
Edit: Black Panther is now at $700,004,026 at the domestic box office, with an miraculous sales increase of 1,299%.

Sony did the same with Spectre so it could reach $200 million, surpass Rogue Nation and crack into the top 10 for the year.
