Moana continues to dominate. In three weeks of release, it has grossed $145 million. Office Christmas Party is #2 with $17.5 million. Before Doomsday celebrates, it cost $45 million to make. It'll make a profit in the long run. Opening on Thursday:

Among all the other records Disney has broken this year, including becoming the highest grossing studio of all time (beating out Universal's $6.89 billion from last year), they are now the only studio in history to make over $7 billion in a single year.
Some of the other records Disney holds for 2016: - Fastest to $1 billion domestically - Fastest to $2 billion domestically - Fastest to $3 billion outside of NA - Fastest to $5 billion worldwide
Universal still has the record for fastest to $6 billion worldwide.

Early estimates have Rogue One opening to $155 million. That's a ton of money... but it's almost a hundred million less than The Force Awakens earned on it's opening weekend. In fact this is only the twelfth highest opening of all time, which most movies would be thrilled to have but seems low for something with "Star Wars" in the title. Hell, it's lower than the opening weekend totals of both Civil War and BvS. This suggests that audiences are going to make a clear distinction between main series entries and these spin-offs.

Did anybody actually think Rogue One was going to open to Force Awakens numbers? Expectations were pretty clearly set for a lower number, so are you really trying to imply $155 million in December is a disappointment...?

I mean, look, these days Hollywood is all about branding and "Star Wars" is the ultimate brand. For a Star Wars movie to draw a lower opening weekend number than Hunger Games 2 and Jurassic World suggests that Star Wars isn't the ultimate branding that people think.

But Rogue One is a different beast than a Star Wars saga film. It's not continuing the adventures of characters we already care about, plus, I think the marketing could have done a much better job of making it more obvious to Joe Schmoe at first that it wasn't Episode VIII. I guarantee Episode VIII will open higher than Rogue One next December. When it comes to the Saga films, I think Star Wars IS that big and Episode VIII will reflect that again.
But have we really gotten to the point where a $155 million opening, in any context, is considered disappointing? Remember, tracking for Rogue One had it pegged at $140-$150 million. So it actually opened slightly above expectations.

They're low estimates that studios release to the public so they can "beat expectations" and look like winners no matter what happens. No one is denying that the "saga" films have more clout than these spinoffs No one is denying that the "saga" films have more clout than these spinoffs, in fact that's exactly what I'm pointing out: that just slapping the Star Wars onto something isn't going to lead to it being the next highest grossing movie of all time.

Rogue One made more money on Monday than it did during the weekend. My heart goes out to Fanible and his movie theater family. So far, Rogue One has grossed $318 million domestically. By comparison, The Force Awakens had made $496 million in the same period. The movies aren't as far apart as Dracula had hoped.

It's been chaos at my theater. Thankfully I don't work on Mondays, but it was still pretty crazy today, and likely will be every day until after New Years.

Rogue One is about $50 million away from overtaking Dory as the number one movie of the year domestically. That will probably happen in the next two weeks, meaning that Attack of the Clones will once again be left with the indignity of being the only Star Wars movie to not do so. Whether it becomes number one worldwide is another question. It's currently in seventh place with $789 million and the number one film (Civil War) is at 1.1 billion. The one market it hasn't opened in yet is China, which would seem to be a big enough market to put it over the top but the Chinese aren't as into Star Wars as the rest of the world. The Force Awakens made about 124 million there, which is a lot of money, but to put that in perspective Civil War made about 190 million there.

If Attack of the Clones had grossed more than The Two Towers in 2002, I would've lost all faith in humanity.

The Top Five movies of 2016 are all going to be Disney films. Doctor Strange is at #11, and won't be climbing any higher on the list at this point. Moana is at #18, and will probably manage to get up to #16 before it's run is through.

Too close to call?
Based on weekend estimates, Rogue One grossed $21.9 million and Hidden Figures grossed $21.8 million. Sing is closely behind with $19.5 million. Rogue One has lost steam and will settle at $500+ million domestically. The Force Awakens grossed $936 million domestically.
Opening next weekend are Live by Night, Patriot's Day, The Bye Bye Man, Monster Trucks and Sleepless. Silence has an extended limited release.
