4 movies smashing the $1bn mark and a 5th on the way. Unprecedented.
Has that happened before, taking inflation into account?

That's 4, not 5.
So no, in other words.

Well, the theater I went to tonight did in fact come to their senses and cancel a couple of alternative movies in order to sell more popcorn, coke & candy to people wanting to see Star Wars. They still had some others playing, and none of those theaters had more people in them than could be counted on one hand.

Star Wars made $40.1 million on Monday. It's new domestic total is $288 million. It'll reach $300 million by Christmas and possibly $400 million by the new year.

$40 mil on a Monday. Wow. I mean I know kids are out of school and this is a movie that people will see more than once, but that is really impressive. Whatever kids, I had Lord of the Rings during my winter breaks at their age so there!

James Cameron will release Avatar 2 tomorrow if Star Wars beats him. But will anyone care about Avatar II: The Quest for Cash? The luster has worn off the original (for lack of a better word) movie after so many years. A strong marketing campaign is going to be necessary to make the sequel a success.

Depends on the final product. That's the only thing that determines repeat views.

James Cameron knows the 3D really helped "Avatar" with repeated viewings. I'm pretty sure he realizes people need a good story and action story-line to get people in the seats.

These are rough estimates.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens grossed $153.5 million this holiday weekend. Its domestic total is now $544.5 million. Avatar should definitely be concerned. Worldwide, the film has reached $1 billion. Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom are the overseas territories where the movie is doing the best.
Daddy's Home did pretty well. It made $38.8 million. In 3rd place is Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence, with $17.5 million. The Hateful Eight's 70mm Roadshow is in 11th place with $4.5 million.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens made it's way into the Top Ten All-Time Box Office Worldwide today at #10. Can it conquer Titanic? Probably. Can it dethrone Avatar? Only time will tell.
