THIS WEEK IN BOX OFFICE HISTORY20 years ago, Toy Story opened in theaters. Martin Scorsese's Casino was also released, believe it or not. And Money Train. And Nick of Time. Fun weekend. But of course, Toy Story is the one people will celebrate. It began our love affair with Pixar - sort of. Doomsday and thebtskink may be able to relate to this, but if you were an older kid, Toy Story was kind-of whatever. We definitely understood that it was groundbreaking. The 3D animation was the selling point. I still remember all the TV specials about the behind-the-scenes of the movie. In fact, it might have been the first behind-the-scenes I ever saw of any movie. I do remember Starz had this show where they interviewed the cast and crew of upcoming movies and showed behind-the-scenes clips, but this was the first time I watched programs devoted to one movie. It was interesting and definitely opened the door to me researching the making-of movies. But still, my friends and I never really got caught up in the hype. We were too busy with Ace Ventura and James Bond and I think Batman Forever was getting its VHS release. We were busy with "big kid" stuff. Nonetheless, Toy Story WAS a big deal and we all saw it in theaters. I don't remember if I actually saw it on Thanksgiving weekend - I probably didn't - but I did contribute to its box office success. Toy Story opened at #1 and went on to become the #1 movie of the year with $191.7 million. That is $365.8 million when adjusted for inflation. Roughly 30 years ago, Rocky IV was released and people... loved it. Yeah. That's right. Once upon a time, audiences genuinely enjoyed Rocky IV. I remember throughout my entire childhood, and even into my middle school years, everyone I knew thought this was the best Rocky movie - BY FAR. It wasn't till high school that people turned against it. I'm not sure why. I suspect that geek culture made Rocky IV irrelevant. As I've explained to SnoBorderZero and PG Cooper in the past, Rocky IV is a man's movie. You have Ivan Drago, who's this genetically engineered Russian that murdered Apollo Creed without barely breaking a sweat. Then you have Rocky who's fucking climbing mountains and shit and beats this... beast... in his own backyard. It was... inspiring. Every time this movie was on television, which was A LOT, men would gather around and cheer. As a kid, this phenomenon always blew my mind. Forget Rudy. Rocky IV was THE sports movie and it has the box office to back it up. From November 29, 1985 till January 5, 1986, the #1 movie in America was Rocky IV. This shit was a big deal. Adjusted for inflation, Rocky IV made $295 million. Not even Interstellar, Deexan 's favorite movie, made that much money.

I took my girlfriend to see Rocky IV in theaters last year. Considering how she had never seen a Rocky movie she thought it was the worst movie she'd ever seen.

Rocky IV sucks just slightly less than Rocky V, both of those movies can go to hell.

Rocky IV is a montage for an entire movie, and a ridiculous one at that. Sure, you can try to play it up by arguing that it's paying homage to the Soviet filmmakers that invented montage, but then we'd be assuming that Stallone has any idea what we're talking about.

Rocky IV sucks just slightly less than Rocky V, both of those movies can go to hell. Apples and oranges. Rocky IV embraces the silliness of the series and pushes it to new levels to make for a riduclous and entertaining ride. Rocky V tries to bring the series back to its roots without any brains or heart, resulting in a film that's both mind numbingly dumb and boring. They're both stupid films, the difference is Rocky IV is just trying to be fun, whereas Rocky V is trying to be taken more seriously, which actually makes it feel stupider. Rocky IV is a montage for an entire movie, and a ridiculous one at that. Exactly why it's so much fun. The film literally stops to have a montage recap of the other films and it's great.

We see it that way now, but I don't know, I think Stallone may have quite genuinely thought he was helping bring an end to the Cold War with Rocky IV.

We see it that way now, but I don't know, I think Stallone may have quite genuinely thought he was helping bring an end to the Cold War with Rocky IV. He made Rocky IV the same year as Rambo II. Both are incredibly over-the-top and patriotic. He may have gotten caught up in the Ronald Reagan era, but I don't think he ever lost his sense of entertainment. This is the same man who got an Oscar nomination for Rocky 1. I think he knows the difference between a serious movie and a silly one. And the fact that Rambo II and Rocky IV were the 2nd and 3rd highest grossing movies of 1985 says that it's exactly what audiences wanted back then. They wanted crazy good entertainment but also wanted a reflection of the bizarre Regan-esque world they were living in. In a single year, Stallone went to Vietnam and defeated the enemies single-handily. Then he went to Russia and ended the Cold War through a boxing match. This is like Donald Trump's wet-dream or something. I honestly can't tell if Stallone was making great satire or not.

It is Sunday. Thanksgiving and Black Friday are behind us. So which movies did people watch during these past few days? The answer isn't something that Dracula and IanTheCool will be happy about. The Hunger Games, after two weeks in release, is about to gross $200 million domestically. That may not seem like a lot. We've seen other blockbusters make that much money in 3 days. True. But the market is very different right now. The Martian has grossed $218 million after two months in release and Spectre is a borderline flop with $176 million after nearly a month of release. People just haven't gotten excited this Fall and early winter. Hunger Games is the clear champion during this post-summer and pre-Star Wars period. In second place is The Good Dinosaur with $55.5 million and in third place is Creed with $42.6 million. That's what both movies made from Tuesday night till now. Not bad, I guess. Especially for Creed. Opening on Friday is Krampus. So... The Hunger Games, The Good Dinosaur and Creed have room to make good money.

Spectre is a borderline flop with $176 million after nearly a month of release. It's the second highest grossing Bond movie of all time already?

I don't know about that, I heard that a staggering amount of its budget was already being covered by the copious product placement.... and it's at $750 million worldwide.

All that was taken into account and even the tax rebate in Mexico. MGM, Sony, EON, and even Daniel Craig, who got a producer's credit, split all the profits. I read that Sony, who still hasn't recovered from last year, will barely make $100 million. That's why it's unlikely for Sony to renew its distribution deal with MGM. Tom Rothman, who's now in charge, wants a much bigger piece of the pie.

THIS WEEK IN BOX OFFICE HISTORYI've been slacking off. Let's catch up. 10 years ago, The Chronicles of Narnia was destined to follow in the footsteps of Lord of the Rings. The first movie was a HUGE success. It ended up becoming the 2nd highest grossing film of 2005 - domestically. So what happened that it didn't live up to conquer the second half of the 2000's? PhantomKnight and his buddies hated it. 10 years ago also saw the release of Peter Jackson's King Kong. It too was a box office success but critical and audience response wasn't that great. 15 years ago, The Grinch, Cast Away and What Women Want dominated the end of the year and all three end up in the top 10 for the year. Best of all, Doomsday was a HUGE fan of all three movies. 20 years ago, Jumanji opened in theaters... and so did Michael Mann's Heat. Jumanji was successful enough to land in the top 10 for the year. It was the last big hit of the year. Edward Scissorhands turned 25 this week. Kindergarten Cop and The Godfather Part III, among many others, turn 25 this month. All these movies got overshadowed by Home Alone at the box office. Seriously. 30 years ago, Young Sherlock Holmes, Clue, Out of Africa, The Color Purple, and Brazil, among a few others, were released... and got over-shadowed by Rocky IV at the box office. Sort of. This was a different era when movies were allowed to have legs. The Color Purple, Out of Africa, The Jewel of the Nile, which PG Cooper has never heard of for some reason, and Spies Like Us, eventually found an audience and all ended up in the Top 10 for the year.
