Nolan has taken my expectations too high. It's all downhill from here. Seriously though, I'm struggling to get pumped because I know the story it's based upon and I don't see an "in" that allows Nolan to do his ting... I know he's gonna embarrass me and blow us all away, but right now I am super-underwhelmed. And I'm a Nolanite. How are the sweaty masses gonna react? E.g. Doomsday? The sweatiest of them all!

Kind of thinking this is going to be for Nolan what Curious Case of Benjamin Button was for Fincher, a well made film that kind of feels like an odd tangent in his filmography where he just made a serviceable prestige movie. Hoping for better, but that's what it looks like from here.

That's what it looks like from a few shots? That's what it looked like when I heard the title. I would be overjoyed to be proven wrong.

By sweaty I assume you're referring to the physical act of perspiration or diaphoresis when fluids are secreted via sweat glands that are present in mammals which is a primary method of thermoregulation? Is that what you mean by sweaty? #nolanized

Looks like I was right.

20% feels like a lot. It must have profit clauses built into it as this is by no means a sure thing. Is it...?

According to Warner Bros, Harry Potter never made a profit. That's why you do % of revenue. Jack Nicholson did that on Batman and he got paid $100 million.

Well he's doing $20 mil on top of that, and it's 20% one way or the other, not after the film starts making its money back and then turns it into an actual profit. And does this only apply to box office gross or does it entail DVD/streaming sales, royalties, etc.? I think he'll be fine.

Looks great. I'm very interested to see Nolan tackle the war genre. Plus, it's coming out the same time of year that Saving Private Ryan did back in '98.

Yes, we do have a lot of WWII movies that, especially since Saving Private Ryan, have all followed far too many tropes from stock characters to muted color palettes. But... this is Nolan, so I think it's safe to say that we can expect more than another Saving Private Ryan wannabe. Visually this looks really strong as well.

It looks like a World War II movie... The movie is secretly a dream level from Inception.

I see a lot of people around the Web underwhelmed by the trailer, but I mean...it's a WWII drama. Given what the genre is, you're not gonna get an Inception or The Dark Knight-style "OMG, this is going to be epic!!!" tone in the trailer. Those films, while great, were still typical of summer blockbuster fare on a base level. Dunkirk, and the type of film it is, is not, and the trailer represents that accurately.

No. The trailer doesn't even tell you what Dunkirk is. Are we supposed to pick up a history book after watching the trailer? Dracula is right. It's just random WWII footage. After Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar, you can't blind trust Nolan. We need plot, characters, etc.
