Hi, Hope someone can help me.
I have an Alienware M17x r3 which is supposed to be a high end gaming machine, but I was just trying to play ARK: Survival Evolved and the sound cuts in and out which also lags movement at the same time.
As far as I know I have updated drivers to the most recent levels, but I can't figure out what it is. Perhaps I need something better for a sound card? Or is the sound the problem?

Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

I peered into the vastness and saw nothing. Felt nothing.

It sounds more like a graphics issue.
ARK Survival is still in early access and not completely optimized yet, but even as they continue to make improvements, it is still a very intensive PC game. While that is a decent gaming laptop, it's not really up to snuff for this particular title (sadly, considering it's a fantastic game). Having said that, keep in mind that no laptop can really be considered a "high-end gaming machine". They will always be limited by their small space.
So unfortunately you'll probably need to wait while they continue to optimize the title further and hopefully it will run a wider range of computers, or you'll need to upgrade your laptop or pick up a desktop gaming PC.

Thanks, Yeah it seems to be better if I turn down the graphics so that's probably it. Not looking like I'll get a new computer or upgrade any time soon - so I hope they do that
