It might still be the best videogame film, which says quite a bit about videogame films.

It might still be the best videogame film, which says quite a bit about videogame films. Yeah... that was... the joke. But the upcoming Warcraft movie SHOULD change that. And there's that Assassin's Creed movie with Michael Fassbender.

I'd put the first Resident Evil movie over MK, but I can see the argument.

X-Men: The Last Stand > Fant4stic Yeah, and Gigli is probably better than Battlefield Earth. Saying a movie is better than the new Fantastic Four isn't saying anything.

I'd put the first Resident Evil movie over MK, but I can see the argument. They're both directed by Paul WS Anderson. It's like debating if chocolate milk is better than white milk mixed in with chocolate powder.

Looks like Assassin's Creed won't be bucking the "all video game movies are bad" trend. Currently sits at 21%. I know movies can't capture the same feeling of playing these games because you've gone from active participant to observer, but damn it can't be that hard to churn out a decent screenplay for at least one game.

I struggle to think of any good computer game movies. There are a few passable options.
Resident Evil 1 is okay not really a "Resident Evil" movie from what I understand but maybe that works in its favour. The sequels just get worse as the go. Mortal Kombat, Super Mario Bros. and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are all pretty bad but in that way that if you are drunk they can be good. Sequels to Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider are awful.
How can they make umpteen Batman movies of varying quality and not one single "good" computer game movie? It isn't like there is a small supply for mining ideas. I shouldn't have worded it that way, they'll be making a Minecraft movie next.

How can they make umpteen Batman movies of varying quality and not one single "good" computer game movie? The theory is that video games don't have good stories. It FEELS like they do because you're participating in the story, but really, the story is just there to move the game along. So if you're making a movie based on a video game you have two options: the Mortal Kombat route or the Super Mario route. Mortal Kombat is a video game about people fighting. The movie is about people fighting. It is what it is. The Super Mario movie decided to take some chances and deviate from the video game and that's why fans hate it. But the video game is about an Italian plumber saving a Princess from a giant lizard. What kind of fucking movie are you gonna get from that? It's a lose-lose unless you adapt a video game that's tailor made for the big screen.

It's a lose-lose unless you adapt a video game that's tailor made for the big screen. The only movies about video games that are ever well received are the ones not directly about any game in particular, such as Wreck-It Ralph, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, The Last Starfighter, Wargames or Tron. If filmmakers would just take the time to look at what works (they should probably ignore Tron, despite it's cult status) and what doesn't (every video game adaptation ever) they could make a film that people could actually enjoy. If nothing else, they could always just hire Michael Bay to do it. There's nobody in Hollywood better prepared to take a garbage screenplay full of unlikable characters whose actions don't make the slightest amount of sense and turn it into box office gold. If Bay had made the Need for Speed movie, it would be right up there alongside The Fast and the Furious.
