It was played somewhat for comedy, so think of a movie on the same wavelength as "April Fools".
I want to say it was "3 o'clock high" but I don't think that's right.

Alright this might be a deep pull, a round of brews for whoever gets it.
So around the time when I was a little kid, late 80s/early 90s, my mom used to watch a lot of MTV and VH1 when we were in bed. Sometimes we'd stay up a little later and peek at whatever was playing on these channels we weren't allowed to watch.
One of the things I vividly remember is the opening of a show. It's animated and it shows a man's hand getting cut off with some narration of '(so and so) cut off his hand....' A shot or so later he has a hook and sneaks up behind someone and sinks the hook into someone's shoulder.
That's all I got. It's been in my brain for decades, I've tried doing random Google searches and got nothing. I'm preeeetty sure it was on either MTV or VH1, I can't think of any other channel that would have had weird animated shows in the 80s or 90s. Anyways, not much to go off but I've been impressed with everyone's broad knowledge in this thread.

That's not the real intro to The Maxx. It's a mash-up that somebody threw together. Nobody gets their hand severed on The Maxx that I recall, just their head. I suspect what you're looking for is not really from MTV. I watched all the animated series on MTV back then, and it doesn't sound familiar. If it was on MTV, I also think it would have to have been just a one-off episode of Liquid Television. There weren't very many animated series on MTV back then. Liquid Television (Aeon Flux), Beavis & Butthead, The Head, The Maxx and Daria are about it.

Siiigh, I’m getting old. Normally I’m the guy who people come to when they can’t remember stuff but this one is driving me crazy, I might have been drinking when I watched it. Help me remember what the hell this is.
I can't recall if this was film or tv but it’s recent; there’s a family that owns this diner in the middle of nowhere, the mountains or something. It’s a dad (I believe he's portrayed by a fairly notable actor), son and daughter. Mom died and the dad is keeping the diner open to keep her memory alive. He's bad with money and this is demonstrated when a new stove arrives. The daughter tells him that they can't afford it and sends the stove delivery guy on his way. Daughter is also seeing this other guy who the family doesn't really care for. At one point the brother confronts boyfriend and I think boyfriend kicks his ass.
Sister and brother. Working at dad's diner. Dad is depressed and buys an expensive stove. I didn't finish it which might explain why I don't remember it, I just drove by a diner today and it triggered this random memory. Someone help, it's driving me nuts.

I'm going to take that as a confirmation I found the right movie. I certainly hope so, anyway. I'd hate to think there are two movies with such a tragic ending in them from the same time period. I also think I found the Judith Light movie you were thinking of, since it also ends in fiery death, and is also supposedly based on a true story. |
