So heres my problem, I need some type of portable device to play music. Cell Phone is out of the question being I don't have one. I know they use to make mp3 players and ipods but are these still relevant? I currently have a small 1gb go gear, but I go through so many batteries and I lost my cord to hook up to my computer a long time ago, and I'm really getting tired of listening to the same 100 songs for the past 5 years My wife has a nextbook tablet, that's the only "computer" we have. Are the current ipods/mp3 players compatible with these, and if so how hard would it be to get songs and put it on it?

YES, iPod's are still relevant. AND YES, the Sony Walkman (it's an MP3 player now) kicks ass. Although, I recommend the iPod so you can automatically download music and have a camera and other apps. The cheaper alternative is definitely the Walkman. They cost like $70, probably cheaper if you get it used.

If you just need a good music player, go cheap. Personally, I don't like restrictions of any kind, and don't need constant updates. Give me a cheap MP3 player any day of the week that I can simply drag my music into. You can find ones that work perfectly for less than $40. If you want to go a little extra fancy, get the Walkman.

Reason I asked if they are still relevant I went to Walmart the other day to look at them and they had absolutely nothing in terms of mp3 players, I didn't know if they were being fazed out or not.
Looked up the Walkman and it looks good, the only problem I see me running across is the usb hookup. This nextbook usb spot is about the size of the ps3 controller hookup.

I have a little Sansa Clip Sport by Sandisk. Just drag and drop music, books, has a built in radio tuner as well. 4GB built in memory, expandable to 32GB with a micro SD card. Cost under $40 average, but I got mine for about $15.

Even at Target we pretty much just carry iPods. We do have a couple of super cheap, and I do mean cheap MP3 players, but not many. We used to carry more before we started carrying Apple.

Even though I'm a loyal Target customer, I bought my iPod at Wal-Mart and my Sony Walkman at Best Buy. RedStorm901 , this is a good time to point out that iPod's are NOT MP3 players. Apple uses an Apple specific format. Apple loves Apple. Always remember that. You CAN upload your MP3 files to the iPod, but any song you download from iTunes will only work on Apple products. That's why it's good to have an MP3 player and an Amazon or Google Play account. If you can only afford one, just go with an MP3 player. It'll work on everything. But if you can afford it, an iPod is not a bad investment. MP3 players are definitely better for transferring your CD's and uploading albums, but if you wanna download random songs, the iPod is so much easier and quicker. With a WiFi connection you can own a song within seconds and immediately listen to it on your device. Some people, like @dukeleto , use their phone but you'll always be at risk of using up your storage. Having a device specifically for songs (and maybe photos) will be less of a hassle.

I have lots of songs from iTunes which work on my Sony Walkman. That must be a Canadian thing. I can't play iTunes stuff on a PC without Quicktime. Unless you have a much newer version of the Walkman. Mine is from the 2000's.

Glad you pointed that out about Apple, I always thought it didn't matter about ITunes.

You can't control what you listen to and there's commercials. It's basically radio on the Internet. YouTube playlists are little better but there's always the risk that the videos will be taken down or disabled from mobile viewing. It's better to just download the music.

Well I went to Best Buy and ended up getting a Android Trio. I was going to get the Sony Walkman but I ran across the problem of it not having the right hookup for my tablet. I got some help and they told me I needed a micro to micro usb cable. Well I'm a very impatient person didn't want to have to wait for the cable to come through the mail so I went ahead with the Trio.
Plus side it has wifi so I can just get the songs through my internet at home instead of having to transfer from my nextbook. Not to mention apps and web browser, so I'm going to give it a shot and see how it does.
Thanks everyone for the help and info.

The Android Trio is one of the worst rated MP3 players. =\
Can't speak from experience though.

I realize that after a couple hours of having it. Horrible battery life going to be taking it back tomorrow. I'm just going to go ahead and bite the bullet and get the Walkman. Just have to order the usb offline and wait a few more days.

So I have a question for whoever might know.
The Walkman is awesome does exactly what I need it to do with a great battery life, however I got online the other day and ordered a USB cable that would fit into my Nextbook. The Walkman side is a mini b 2.0 and the Nextbook is just a micro USB. Well I got the cable in the mail today but it doesn't work. It fits perfectly on each end but my tablet isn't picking it up. Do I need some special type of USB or should just a regular cable work?
USB Cable
That's a link to the one I ordered.
