So, are these movies in high-demand from Netflix members? Twice now, I've had the latest Bond movie I need to see at the top of my DVD Queue with a "Long Wait" period attached, and both times, the movie in my #2 slot has been shipped out first, with the Bond film in question then shipping out as a free extra movie a day later from a different shipping facility. Should I expect this of the rest?

Yeah, I really dont give a shit whether spectre is coming out or not, I just wanted to check them out. I'm stalled right now anyways as I can't find spy who loved me. All I want is a spy who will love me!

THE SPY WHO LOVED ME (1977)
At this point on my trek through the Bond franchise, it feels like I'm running out of things to say other than the same compliments/criticisms over and over again. What's abundantly clear by now is that the producers of the franchise at this time mostly wanted to keep to the same general formula, only mixing it up when need be. The Spy Who Loved Me is more of a traditional Bond film, after Guy Hamilton's overall more straightforward last three films, and this is a Bond film that manages to take the traditions/tropes of the series and put them all together into a workable movie. And after the last couple of entries before this one, it's a welcome addition.
The Spy Who Loved Me is well-paced and exciting, and I also think it's Roger Moore's best turn as Bond based on what I've seen from him so far. The plot itself feels pretty typical of what we've come to expect from these films, unsurprisingly, but director Lewis Gilbert injects some much-needed life into the proceedings that helps this movie avoid running the risk of becoming dull. He stages some good action that would rank among the best of what I've seen from the franchise up to this point. But of course, The Spy Who Loved Me marks the introduction of famous Bond henchman Jaws, portrayed by Richard Kiel, and the character indeed lives up to the hype. Any fight scene with him in this film is great, and Jaws certainly makes for an intimidating presence.
Ideally, I'd hope that the energy of The Spy Who Loved Me would be maintained going forward, but I know the next installment is Moonraker, so I'm not holding my breath.

PhantomKnightYou Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker are pretty much the same movie. Lewis Gilbert is the AC/DC of Bond directors.

Well, I certainly didn't like the looks of the space laser fight from Moonraker (wow, that's really a thing) posted a few pages back. Since you're struggling to review these movies, here's a few things you could have pointed out: 1. Stanley Kubrick did the lighting for the underwater lair or whatever you wanna call it. 2. This is the movie that set new standards for the action scenes in the Bond franchise. From now on, you're gonna see at least one crazy stunt in every Bond movie. This is essentially the Fast Five of the Bond series. 3. Nobody Does It Better is the first Bond song about James Bond. 4. This is the first time James Bond appears in the opening credits. (Don't forget to mention the opening credits in For Your Eyes Only) 5. This is the first time in the Roger Moore series that James Bond's dead wife is mentioned. She'll be a big part of For Your Eyes Only. 6. You completely ignored the feminist angle with Agent XXX. 7. James Bond caught having sex becomes a running gag in the remaining Roger Moore movies and in the Pierce Brosnan ones. Jibbs favorite one is , "I thought Christmas only came once a year." But that's 10 movies away. It'll be a few months before you get to that.

MOONRAKER (1979)
Now I come to Moonraker, a.k.a The One Where James Bond Goes To Space. WHY does James Bond have to go to space, you ask? Well, because two years before Moonraker, a little movie called Star Wars (perhaps you've heard of it) was released, and it was a giant success. Clearly, the producers of the James Bond franchise noticed that and figured, "Hey, let's get in on that!" So, rather than going forward immediately with their next-planned Bond film, For Your Eyes Only, they delayed that film to 1981 so they could give us the rushed cash-in that is Moonraker, which may not be the absolute worst Bond film I've seen up to this point, but it's still certainly down there in the Bottom Three.
Going into this movie, I was honestly expecting the worst, and while what I got wasn't anywhere near good, it could've been worse. Basically, whenever Moonraker isn't being surprisingly boring, it's being incredibly silly to the point of distraction. Take out all the space-related stuff and you're left with a very paint-by-the-numbers Bond film that lacks any real energy or entertainment. Even Roger Moore appears uninterested this time around. The attempts at comedy are incredibly lame, with the most egregious offense in that regard being how the Jaws character is turned into a joke, mainly used as a punchline more than anything else. All that seemed to be missing from his scenes was a "Wah-wah-waaaaaaaah!" in the soundtrack. And don't even get me started on the random romantic subplot, if you can call it that, for Jaws that comes out of fucking NOWHERE and just hangs awkwardly in the middle of all the movie's shenanigans. As for the Third Act in space, it indeed sucks and feels like it has no place in a Bond film. Also, the villain is completely unremarkable and I was equally un-invested in his scheme.
As much as I've enjoyed Roger Moore in the role of Bond so far, it's starting to feel like a change is in order for the franchise. So let's see what the 80's has in store for it.

whenever Moonraker isn't being surprisingly boring Yeah, that's my issue with the movie. I really don't care that he goes to outer space. I think that's hilarious. The real issue with Moonraker is that it's a snoozefest. Although the pre-credits sequence kicks ass and Jaws falling in love was amusing. Still... you're right that Moonraker isn't the absolute worst. I think I would still give that honor to Live and Let Die. Don't worry. John Glen is next. He has the honor of being the person who directed the most James Bond movies. He also directed every single James Bond movie from the 1980's. Even though I'm not a fan of 80's Bond, it's definitely the most consistent decade for the franchise and the only time they perfectly balanced the absurdity of the series with the seriousness. Knowing you and your preference for Daniel Craig you're gonna love For Your Eyes Only, The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill. Octopussy is VERY flawed but it has its moments. And people hate A View to a Kill for stupid reasons, but it's a fun exit for Roger Moore. And the music by John Barry kicks ass in that one. So don't take too long with 80's Bond. I think you'll actually enjoy this decade.

You'd call Live and Let Die the worst? The pre-credit scenes are easily the worst. The opening with Roger Moore trying to hide a girl from M is the worst possible way to introduce a new James Bond. The plot was about... drug dealers? Isn't there more important things for 007 to do? Bond rapes a girl. Literally. Sheriff JW Pepper. Do I need to go on?

Yeah... Moonraker is not great. My nostalgia makes it more or less impossible for me to actively dislike a Bond movie that isn't Diamonds are Forever or Quantum of Solace but that one comes close. There are still a few too many classic Bond moments like the opening scene and "attempting re-entry" to allow me to completely dismiss it. You were also a little hard on the space finale, which I think is good cheesy fun.
Anyway For Your Eyes Only was a deliberate attempt to ground the series again after having sent it off the deep end with Moonraker. It's still very much a Roger Moore movie, so don't expect it to be Casino Royale or something, but it's definitely a little less ridiculous.
