Sean Connery is holding out in hopes of seeing Scottish independence some day.

I said out loud on Saturday that all of the Bonds are still alive. I apologize.

Sheriff JW Pepper passed away. No clue he was still alive. Dude was 96. JW Pepper and Roger Moore died weeks apart. I just finished re-watching Live and Let Die. Frustrating movie. I like the characters. I like the humor. I like the action scenes. Paul McCartney! But the plot is the very definition of an Austin Powers joke. Just shoot the guy! The whole movie is the bad guys setting up elaborate death traps for James Bond. Seriously. The whole fucking movie! Shooting the driver. The snake. The double crossing CIA agent. The plane. The alligator/crocodile pit. The sharks at the end. Just shoot the fucking guy!

I enjoy The Man with the Golden Gun. It has its faults but it's generally well done. Roger Moore is a bit more serious but still has charming moments. I like the gags and action scenes. The story has more grit but makes room for the outlandish. One of the better Roger Moore movies.

The Spy Who Loves Me loses its specialness if you're doing a marathon. Live and Let Die and Golden Gun have their flaws but they have their quirks and personality. Spy is just You Only Live Twice with submarines instead of spaceships. But it is nice to see James Bond return to the big leagues after two relatively small-scale films. There's big sets, big action scenes and big stunts. It's a tad mainstream but the silly end-of-world plot and the henchman Jaws give it that James Bond feel. Roger Moore is capable as a blockbuster star. He gets the reputation of being "the funny Bond" but he knows when to be dramatic and a man of action.
It's also interesting how he caters his performance to the needs of each movie. In Live and Let Die he plays up the British charm to contrast with the stereotypical Black American villains. In Golden Gun he balances seriousness and humor for a story about assassins and giant laser beams. In Spy he grounds himself against the spectacle but still winks at the audience from time to time.
Of the three movies I'd say he's best in Golden Gun. There's just more for him to do there. In Spy he's too vanilla and the reason people tend to favor Sean Connery - an actor that defined the badass elegance that audience came to associate with James Bond. He wears a tuxedo but he'll also murder you and then sleep with your wife. Roger Moore never captured that. His essence was the proper British gentleman who could win a bar fight - with a judo chop. That's not necessarily bad, and is what the franchise needed in the 70's, but it doesn't do a movie like Spy any favors.

The pigeon doing a double take , Jibbs favorite scene, is even more ridiculous in HD.

People bitch and moan about the space scenes in Moonraker but that's actually the most interesting part of the movie!
You appreciate The Spy Who Loved Me once you've sat through Moonraker. They saw the box office for Spy and said, "let's do that again but shitty." Then they saw the box office for Star Wars and said, "let's also have a space sequence."
Boring plot. Boring characters. Boring action (although the stunts are impressive). If it weren't for James Bond going into space, which took cojones - not even Fast & Furious has gone into space, this movie would be unwatchable.

People don't give Roger Moore credit for surviving three phases of James Bond. His first two efforts were a bridge between the fantasy adventure of the 60's and trends from the 70's (blaxploitation, Bruce Lee knock off's). His next two films were blockbusters and his last three were 80's action movies. In that 12 year period they could have had three actors with their own distinct style but Roger Moore plowed through it with not too much compromise. He's labeled the funny Bond but he could be serious or an action star when he needed to. What held all these performances together were his charm and sense of humor.
For Your Eyes Only was his biggest attempt to be taken seriously as James Bond. It's grounded in reality and story driven and the action scenes don't rely on gadgets or fantasy. But it's also not immune to the occasional one-liner.
Many consider it the best of the Roger Moore era - or at least second best if pressured to choose The Spy Who Loved Me. Quite frankly, I've never bought into that. For Your Eyes Only can be boring at times. The pre-title sequence is fantastic, it features James Bond disposing of Blofeld. There's two fun action scenes, a car chase and a ski chase. And good gags sprinkled throughout the film. Oh - and Roger Moore kicks a car off a ledge. Badass! The rest doesn't work for the simple fact it's a weak revenge story. James Bond is investigating a Greek crime lord and runs into a woman avenging the death of her parents. That's fine except when the villain is forgettable. It has the opposite problem of Live and Let Die. That movie is littered with great villains and henchmen but the premise is idiotic. Here, you got a decent plot wasted on villains you won't even remember once the end credits start rolling.

One of the criticisms of the James Bond franchise is the wonky plots. Some of them are silly enough to remember: radiating Fort Knox, stealing spaceships, starting wars to sell newspapers. But the majority are forgettable. Either they're generic or just... confusing.
Dr. No is a good start of the series. Sean Connery is awesome. Many of the tropes are there. But the plot makes very little sense. An agent is murdered in Jamaica. His office is trashed. His secretary is killed. James Bond is summoned, and as soon as he steps foot in Jamaica, all the bad guys know who he is and try to kill him. How? Is there a mole or something? I can understand his presence being known once he's interacting with local authorities but the man just got off the damn plane. Then he learns the bad guys scheme is to disrupt American space launches. For what purpose? So Russia could win the space race? They haven't even landed a man on the moon yet. A little soon to worry space weapons or whatever. World War III wasn't gonna break out over whatever shenanigans Dr. No was up to.
Also, this movie must have been bonkers when it came out. We lose sight of that now cause of what came later. "It's about the Cold War ... and space ... and a white man playing a China man." Thank God for Sean Connery. This movie could have been a total flop.

I sat through the 1967 Casino Royale. I've seen bits and pieces over the years but this is the first time I saw it from beginning to end in one sitting. Bit of mess. It's two stories sandwiched together. James Bond, played by David Niven, is brought out of retirement to run MI-6. His nephew, played by Woody Allen (seriousy), is kidnapping gorgeous women and killing attractive men. He suffers from sexual inadequacy. Meanwhile, an agent going by the name James Bond (I guess this is where the multiple 007 theory spawned from) is assigned to play against Le Chiffre in a game of high stakes baccarat. They're played by Peter Sellers and Orson Welles and it's the only part of the movie based on the Ian Fleming novel. It's not terrible. There's lots of good scenes. It's very 60's - very trippy. Music is really good. It just has a very incoherent plot.
