#17 - THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS (1987)Remind me never to go paintballing with James Bond. #16 - LICENSE TO KILL (1989)I can't tell if I'm watching James Bond or Lethal Weapon 2. #15 - DIE ANOTHER DAY (2002)Sorry Jibbs#14 - THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999)Sorry Doomsday#13 - MOONRAKER (1979)The Spy Who Loved Me began the tradition of starting a James Bond movie with a crazy stunt. Moonraker began the tradition of trying to top those stunts. #12 - CASINO ROYALE (2006)Clever. #11 - GOLDENEYE (1995)They took Pierce Brosnan back to the 1980's and erased Timothy Dalton from existence. That's a good or bad thing depending on who you ask.

I'm with Jibbs when it comes to Skyfall and Tomorrow Never Dies. The opening of The Living Daylights is the first scene of any James Bond movie I ever watched.

"Sorry Jibbs?" The DAD opening was decent. Middle ground is fine.
But Goldeneye is way too low.

#10 - QUANTUM OF SOLACE (2008)Like Doomsday pointed out in his review for Spectre, the James Bond films have a very specific layout. The villain is revealed, James Bond has a meeting with M, then he's off to get gadgets from Q and finally he goes off on his mission. That's why the pre-opening credits scene (or sequence) is so important. It's the big action scene before the movie that wets everyone's appetite. But... you can't easily start a movie in the middle of an action scene. You have to set it up first. In the case of Quantum of Solace, however, there's nothing to set up because it picks up exactly where Casino Royale ended. So everything was already set up and it can just... cut to the chase. Get it now, IanTheCool ? #9 - DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER (1971)Sean Connery uses a bikini top to choke a bitch. How can you guys hate this movie? #8 - OCTOPUSSY (1983)"Fill her up, please." Classic. #7 - YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (1967)The Sean Connery movies walked a fine line between seriousness and absurdity and that was never better represented than in the opening sequence to You Only Live Twice. We see a space shuttle get stolen - IN SPACE. We see the most stereotypical Americans and English argue about spy intelligence. And then we see James Bond murdered in the most obvious way possible. How it took 5 movies to even try it is anyone's guess. And in spite of all this silliness, the opening works because, as Deexan would say, it predates irony. #6 - THUNDERBALL (1965)She's a man, baby! James Bond kills a man in drag and then flies off in a jet pack. I miss when these movies were funny. #5 - THE SPY WHO LOVED ME (1977)Take notes, Sam Mendes. Take notes. #4 - FOR YOUR EYES ONLY (1981)Take notes, Sam Mendes. Take notes. #3 - ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE (1969)George Lazenby was at his best when he said very little and just beat the shit out of people. #2 - FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (1963)Take notes, Christopher Nolan. Take notes. #1 - GOLDFINGER (1964)Do I even need to explain this one?

Ian's Bond Education Octopussy
Its interesting how the Moore movies have created their own mold, but I still maintain that they lack the same charm as the Connery flicks. Still, Octopussy is a decent entry into the canon. It feels a lot more linear than something like Moonraker, which was a bloody mess. I like that the locations were limited to really just two. The India location worked well and provided an interesting backdrop. I didn't really get the importance of faking the jewelry, but whatever. Some of the stuff I liked: Bond escaping from the palace in India, the spy feel of the Russian subplot, the character of Octopussy (kind of). Also, the circus train stuff was alright. There's also a scene which is very reminiscent (and by that I mean border-line rip-off) of the Cairo scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark. But... I still kinda liked it. Especially his line with the sword-swallower; "I've better let you put that back in" Things I didn't like: the theme song was brutal, sounded like the theme song of some awful 80s family sitcom. And though I jsut said the circus train stuff was alright, it was also a little long. In fact, one thing I've found with this bond films lately is threat they are all about 20 minutes too long. Most of them could be trimmed considerably. Also... a guy who uses a circular saw as a yoyo? C'mon. Its alright. I can see why Homer watched it twice. 7/10 [/a]

Man, I had a bunch of lists. Here's a good one: (Though clearly I cleaned and completed some of them up when I posted the full list)
Best Line • “Don’t touch that. That’s my lunch.” (Goldeneye) • Bond, James Bond (Dr. No) • “Do you expect me to talk?” “No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die.” (Goldfinger) • “Exceptionally fine shot.” “I didn’t know there was a pool down there.” (DAF) • “He disagreed with something that ate him.” (LTK) • “I never joke about my work, 007” (Goldfinger) • “That gun: it looks more fitting for a woman.” “You know much about guns?” “No, I know a little about women.” (Thunderball) • “Mind if my friend sits this one out? She’s just dead.” (Thunderball) • “I never miss.” (TWINE) • “Don’t worry; we gave her a nice honeymoon.” (LTK) • “I thought I’d wake up dead.” (Goldfinger) • “Choose your next witticism carefully Mr. Bond, it may be your last.” (Goldfinger) • “Shut the door, Alec. There’s a draft.” (Goldeneye) • “Well, here’s to us.” (Moonraker) • “You just killed James Bond!” “Is THAT who that was?” (DAF) • “Now the whole world’s going to know you died scratching my balls.” (Casino Royale) • “I think he’s attempting re-entry, sir.” (Moonraker) • “This will hurt him more than it will hurt me.” (AVTAK) • “Are you looking for shells?,” “No, I’m just looking” (Dr. No) • “We’re working on one right now.” “Oh Q, shut up.” (TMWTGG) • “Shocking. Positively shocking.” (Goldfinger) • “What did he promise you? His heart?” (LTK) • “For England, James?” “No. For me.” (Goldeneye) • “Ah yes, the legendary James Bond wit. Or at least half of it.” (TWINE) • “At least I shall have the pleasure of putting you out of my misery.” (Moonraker) • Bond: Who'd want to put a contract on me? M: Jealous husbands! Outraged chefs! Humiliated tailors! The list is endless! (TMWTGG) • “I’m glad I killed him,” “YOU’RE glad?” (Thunderball) • “What about the money?” “Launder it.” (LTK) • “We are teachers on sabbatical and we’ve just won the lottery.” (QOS) • “When this mission is over, I will kill you” (TSWLM) • “When people say ‘we’ve got people everywhere’.” (QOS) • “But today’s the 13th.” “I’m superstitious” (OHMSS) • “Get your clothes on - and I’ll buy you an ice cream.” (FYEO) • “We’re strictly plutonic. Now.” (TWINE) • “I think we’ve met.” (TND) • “I think he got the point.” (Thunderball) • “They’re for my ice skates,” “Lovely sport!” (Goldfinger)

TOMORROW NEVER DIES (1997)
My thoughts are going to be pretty cut-and-dry/to-the-point on this one, because Tomorrow Never Dies is a very to-the-point film in and of itself, and I appreciated that about it.
GoldenEye is regarded not only as Brosnan's best Bond outing but one of the best Bond films in general. However, I couldn't help but feel underwhelmed by it and feared the same would be true for this movie, but surprisingly, I ended up enjoying Tomorrow Never Dies more than GoldenEye. It's easy for me to pinpoint why, too: not only does Tomorrow Never Dies embrace its silliness and stupidity (and this movie is DEFINITELY both those things), it also doesn't bullshit around with length. For some reason, the producers of Bond think almost every single one of the movies need to be 130 minutes or slightly over, but not all of the movies have needed that length. Tomorrow Never Dies is 119 minutes counting end credits, and it's much better-paced than a typical Bond movie as a result. Nothing's dwelt on for too long a time, and the movie's always fairly exciting to watch in some form or other.
The plot itself is silly -- I mean, a big news network committing terrorism ultimately for global broadcasting rights, who thought that up? -- but the script knows its ridiculous and embraces that. This leads to a lot of fun action sequences and, like I already said, it's a movie that doesn't overstay its welcome. Pierce Brosnan continues to be solid as Bond, plus, I found the Bond girl in this one pretty badass. But most importantly, Jonathan Pryce is a highly enjoyable villain and his performance fits in with the rest of the movie very well.
I really wasn't expecting to prefer Tomorrow Never Dies to GoldenEye, but there you have it.

Good work, PhantomKnight. Did you know this movie was released on the same weekend as Titanic - and survived? Like Dracula once pointed out, it was the equivalent of 2009's Sherlock Holmes. I still remember watching Tomorrow Never Dies in a packed theater and the audience loved it. I've seen every James Bond movie in theaters since GoldenEye, a 20 year tradition that Jibbs and I share, and Tomorrow Never Dies was the most fun people had. I don't know. There was something about 1997 that just clicked with people. Titanic was huge. Men in Black was huge. Liar Liar was huge. The Star Wars Special Edition, which people bitch about now, were huge back then. People just loved cinema that year. Even silly stuff like George of the Jungle had people laughing their ass off.

1997 was a good year. And yeah I agree, Tomorrow Never Dies is just a lot of fun and well executed and Pryce is good as the villain. It's silly but it works overall, and the action is well done also. It's dumb, but not next two Brosnan films dumb.

THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999)
Only three movies in, and Pierce Brosnan's run as James Bond started to run out of steam. It wasn't for lack of trying, though, but rather a lack of any real energy. The World Is Not Enough certainly TRIES to be a good, enjoyable entry in the franchise, and while it has its moments, it just feels kind of flat and arbitrary most of the time.
There's a few things about this movie that I genuinely do like, but quite a few other things that I either didn't or was simply impassive about. Starting with what I liked: this movie has a kick-ass opening sequence that just goes on and on, but in a good way. This opening sequence is so good, and very reminiscent of the sheer energy of Tomorrow Never Dies, that the fact that none of the action afterwards is able to live up to it is definitely a little disappointing. I also like the idea of a villain who can feel no pain, and also the idea of personalizing a mission for Bond. The first half hour or so of the "meat of the story" is good, and there are a few solid scenes sprinkled throughout. One other thing is that I liked how this movie actually took the time to give Q, played for so long by Desmond Llewellyn, an actual send-off while bringing in his replacement, played by John Cleese. It's a nice tough that I really did appreciate.
Now for what I disliked/didn't care for...which is, unfortunately, basically the rest of the movie. Like I said, The World Is Not Enough TRIES to be good, but the execution just...isn't there. In theory, this should work. But Robert Carlyle is actually kind of blah as the villain, the plot feels a little overcomplicated, the Bond girls (two of them this time) are unremarkable, despite one of their names and despite that one is actually the secondary freaking villain, and the action never really lives up the opening. The World Is Not Enough is a Bond movie that has good ideas, but just executes them in underwhelming fashion. It's a movie that's watchable overall, but not one I actively disliked; more like a movie that can be summed up with a resounding "meh."
**1/2 /****
And I've now seen every major Bond film released before Spectre. But I re-watched Skyfall before seeing the new film opening weekend, and I'll post about that as well.

The send off for Q was very fortunate since he had no intention of retiring from that role. Ever. He died shortly after in a car crash.

I've been slowly buying all the movies, which is heartbreaking, because the covers keep getting worse and worse. I have the Sean Connery Collection from 2011. It's the DVD collection. Best Buy was selling it for $9.99 each, it's two collections, on the week of Black Friday. I haven't seen that specific collection since then. Mine came with all the Special Features discs. The newer collections just seem to be the movies with maybe a commentary track thrown in. I have the steelbook edition of On Her Majesty's Secret Service on Blu-Ray which Best Buy is still selling. I think I got it for $7.99. I have The Spy Who Loved Me on Blu-Ray with the REALLY shitty cover. Best Buy is practically giving those away. I got mine for $4.99. I also have A View to a Kill on Blu-Ray which I bought in 2013 or 2014 at Target. They were practically giving it away. I have the 2-disc Special Edition DVD of The Living Daylights, which I got at Sam's Club in 2010. I also bought From Russia With Love and Thunderball, but I gave those away when I bought the Sean Connery Collection. I also had the Goldfinger DVD from WAY back in the 1990's. I think it was the first DVD of Goldfinger. I think my uncle has it now. I have License to Kill on Blu-Ray. I bought it at Target on the same day as A View to a Kill. Both were cheap. I have GoldenEye on Blu-Ray, which I bought at Sam's Club in 2012. It was like $7.99, I think. The cover is awesome. I bought the 2-disc Special Edition DVD of Casino Royale at Border's right before they went out of business in 2010 or 2011. I think I got it for $5. I bought the barebones DVD of Quantum of Solace when a Blockbuster was going out of business in 2009. They were practically giving it away. And I bought Skyfall on Blu-Ray this year at Sam's Club. It was $7.99. So, I'm just missing the majority of the Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan movies, which is like 9 movies, I think.
