A lot of these are R. Were they NC-17 at some point and re-rated later or are they just oversights?

I've seen 13 of these, though I dispute that some on that list are true NC-17 films since those versions were just slapped across as "unrated" DVD releases. "Eyes Wide Shut" is rated R, for example, though I'm sure there's cuts that exist that would make it NC-17, but they aren't released for public viewing, at least that I know of. Most on there are true NC-17 films though, and I still don't understand what the taboo on them is all about. Personally the NC-17 rating intrigues me solely because there's so few of them made.

Also, IMDB lists "Wild at Heart" as NC-17, but I've only seen it in R-rated formats. Really good movie too, full of wild sex and Nicolas Cage in all its David Lynch glory, but even though there's a lot of graphic everything in the movie, it was definitely R. Now movies like the Nymphomaniac films and "Blue is the Warmest Color", yeah those are clearly NC-17.

A lot of these are R. Were they NC-17 at some point and re-rated later or are they just oversights? Some of the older movies like Wild Bunch and Last Tango were X-rated but that rating was eliminated to avoid confusion were porn. So they're now re-classified as NC-17. And other movies like Clerks were given an NC-17 but later demoted to an R when studio representatives bitched at the MPAA. So... yeah... the list uses loopholes. I hope Tropic of Cancer is one of them and you rented it from the public library.

"The Wild Bunch" is rated R now, "Last Tango in Paris" does stand as an actual NC-17. I've wanted to watch "Bad Lieutenant" but stupid ass Netflix (read the reviews for this info) has edited the movie to exclude anything actually NC-17. Who the hell does this that isn't Russia or North Korea? Thank you for saving us Netflix, none of us wanted the true version of the movie we're renting, we'd much rather have an edited version, I feel so much safer now.
I've never even heard of "Tropic of Cancer" (but I can point it out on a map!) so nope, sorry to disappoint. I'd offer to watch it and swap movies with you again, but you still owe me a Criterion review that I'm never going to stop bugging you about.

Have you seen that Swedish movie, They Call Her One Eye? Netflix has two version: the edited and unedited one. It might be the case with Bad Lieutenant. It's coming soon.

Nope, haven't heard of that one either. The "Bad Lieutenant" edit is stupid though, like why would you just omit like 5 minutes of the movie? I'm pretty sure anyone renting an NC-17 film is well aware of what they're getting into.
Yeah, yeah, I've heard that one before. And "Time Bandits" and "RoboCop" don't count, a Criterion you haven't seen.

Haven't heard of that one either. It's a foreign movie from the 1940's. You'll only be semi-disappointed.

Well, that movie didn't look ridiculous at all.
Wow, a foreign 40s film. Impressive.

That movie didn't look ridiculous at all. I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. I was being very sarcastic, it's a girl with an eye patch shooting people and a ridiculous car explosion to top off the trailer. '70s exploitation films at their finest. I'm not saying I wouldn't watch it.

I've seen 12 of them. Hard to believe some of those were NC-17...

I've seen 25 As others have pointed out though, this list is kind of bullshit, a lot of these were appealed down to R or were released unrated, and with that loose criteria I'm kind of surprised that a bunch of other titles weren't on there. The blu-ray is uncut and unrated. You're right that there's never been a version to officially be released with the NC-17 "The Wild Bunch" is rated R now, It was always rated R I've never even heard of "Tropic of Cancer" (but I can point it out on a map!) so nope, sorry to disappoint. I'd offer to watch it and swap movies with you again, but you still owe me a Criterion review that I'm never going to stop bugging you about. It's based on a book by the dude that #8 was about

A woman gets raped by a tree. I could list R-rated movies where people get raped by actual people, but I'd rather not.

Clerks never had any business getting an NC-17 rating from the MPAA. It's all just talk about explicit situations, with nothing explicit actually occurring on screen.

I think "The Evil Dead" is NC-17 actually, it just always carries the NR rating with it. Aside from the tree rape scene, which no doubt is the main reason it nabbed the rating, it's got some pretty intense gore for 1981, and the decomposing flesh as well is pretty nasty. I mean yeah, we've all seen films that push all of this a bit more, but I remember years ago when I first watched the film that it did carry the NC-17 tag. But like people have mentioned, this list seems to consist more of films that were unfairly labeled NC-17 or that were initially before succumbing to cuts.
On a side note, I still need to watch "Showgirls" in all its craptastic glory.
