Why is the "trigger warning" culture so obsessed with the rape scene in episode 10 of season 3? This is a show about prison. Someone was gonna get raped sooner or later. There's no need to set off the alarms. People who get "triggered" easily probably shouldn't be watching this show at all.

It is a little strange that the same activists who go to great pains to express that rape is a wildly common aspect of the human experience also seem to want it to be erased from art and pop culture. You can't really have it both ways.
Also, I wonder how Oz would have been received in today's climate...

Oz's target audience isn't the one that turns every little thing into a federal case on the Internet. But this was back when HBO was Tales of the Crypt and Arli$$. The show would probably be very different today since HBO has a mainstream audience and a prestige reputation, so they may have taken a different route in certain situations. Likewise, Orange is the New Black wouldn't have been so political in the 90's. There would have been no Netflix. It would have been on a different cable environment. Ratings would have mattered. The show would have tried not to alienate middle America.

The show would have tried not to alienate middle America. I heard once that HBO actually encouraged Tom Fontana to make Oz as "out there" and alienating as possible. The idea was that it would be a calling card to every talented show-runner in the business who would think "wow, if they're going to let someone get away with making that I can't imagine them saying no to, say, a show about a gangster who goes to a psychologist."

Yeah, Oz (and Sex and the City to some extent) created HBO. The Sopranos gets the credit cause that's the first show embraced by critics and the Emmys.

I just finished season 3. It's pretty easily the weakest season but, then again I did binge watch it in like three days so it can't be all bad. I would say that it doesn't have as much of a central arc and it's also running into the same problem Lost ran into: running out of characters to focus flashbacks on. There's still plenty of steam in it, but I do worry about future seasons because some cracks are definitely showing.

Season 3 sucked. Not one good story arc and Piper somehow managed to be even worse of a character than ever.
Crazy Eyes turned into a brilliant character in seasons 1 and 2, and this season saw fit to turn her into a .... smut writer?
Nicky disappears mid-season, as does Bennett, the lack of Pornstache was tough, and all the baby mama drama was just annoying. I was pretty disinterested by episode five, but kept watching and waiting for that one redeeming moment - it never came.
