I only frequent one message board besides this one, and they have a topic entitled 'Bands Who Lost Their Way' - referring to artists who went from excellence to mediocrity.
I think it's too easy to find examples in that category, so I want to know who's lasted the distance over at least 15 years.
For me, there's one standout contender: Sigur Ros. Yeah, I'm biased, but they never rest on their laurels and, 20 years since their debut, they are still relevant and still exploring music as if they were new to it. They lost one of their fouding members prior to their last album's release but it didn't seem to have any effect on quality - I'm just wondering who else has lasted for two decades without ever having to "reinvent" themselves or rely on their former glories.
Sigur Ros through the ages:
1997
1999
2002
2005
2008
2012
2013
I'm in awe listening to those. Who else has lasted so long without compromising?

No such band exists. And if they do, they won't for long.

I think Sigur Ros are a complete anomaly and have only managed it because they have never crossed into commercial territory - their output simply prohibits it. Aside from maybe ' Hoppipolla', nothing they've made comes close to being classically "commercial". How could they be, they don't even sing in English. They're under no pressure to stay relevant or "cool". And yet they've appeared in The Simpsons and Game of Thrones. I can't help but think that the majority of viewers of both those shows are completely confused by their inclusion, but the creators of each show insisted on it. I remember seeing that documentary about Metallica when they were falling apart internally and they revealed that Sigur Ros' music saved them from oblivion, so they sent Sigur one of their gold, or platinum, discs as a thank you for keeping them sane. There's a really sweet clip of Sigur being their usual modest selves and talking about how surreal it was to receive that.

No such band exists. And if they do, they won't for long. Some people might say U2. They've been hit-or-miss but that's to be expected from anyone who's been releasing music for 30+ years. Metallica has had a good run too. Napster killed their image and they've had some internal battles but they've kept things interesting.

I enjoyed The Beatles beginning to end. The Beatles lasted for a decade. I don't think that's what Deexan is asking. I think he's asking about bands like The Rolling Stones that never go away. For example, The Foo Fighters have been around for 20 years and they're still somewhat good.

For some reason I thought the Beatles started earlier than they did.

Foo Fighters are a good example. They're almost single handedly keeping a certain type of rock alive.
For that matter I'd add AC/DC, Alice in Chains, and the Deftones. Despite the change in singers on the first two, all three have been pretty consistent in sound since shortly after their creations.

I think "Big Guns" from the Last Action Hero soundtrack is the newest AC/DC song I've heard.

AC/DC only made one song. Over and over. The drummer made the same song over and over, the rest of them have diverged.

U2 don't qualify. I can't comment on the Stones. Generally, a lack of commercialism is helpful.

I really enjoyed Morrissey's last album. Although he's considered a solo artist, he's had pretty much the same back up band since a couple albums after The Smith's broke up, which is at least 20 years now. Despite a couple hiatuses, his music's always been pretty consistent, yet each album has always managed to sound fresh. I stand behind him.

The Dillinger Escape Plan has always impressed me with each album and continue to put on a hell of a live show.

I know a band that has always been great, but you've probably never heard of them. They're very obscure.

Judas Priest. The group were essential in crafting metal's image and sound and put out some absolutely stellar metal albums. Additionally, the band's sound has subtly evolved over time, remaining true to it's core while still changing. They may have had the odd misstep including their first album 1986's "Turbo", and the two albums they did without singer Rob Halford in the late 90s, but outside of those few exceptions, Priest has remained consistently awesome. I suppose they aren't the most famous group, but they've remained a staple of Heavy Metal from the mid-70s until now. They're last album was last year, and it was fucking sweet.
