The Water Diviner
While everyone else was getting their Avengers on I decided I would rather go watch Russell Crowe's directorial debut. Set shortly after the end of World War I, The Water Diviner tells the story of Joshua Connor, an Australian man whose three sons were killed at the battle of Gallipoli. Finding himself recently widowed, he promises his dead wife that he will travel to Gallipoli, find his boys and bury them at home. With the help of a hotel worker and a Turkish Colonel who sympathizes with his plight, he searches the battlefield to find out what happened to his boys and if in fact they're really dead.
Russell Crowe is one of the very few contemporary screen actors that come to mind when I try to think of someone whose talent is equalled by their sense of rugged masculinity, capturing the essence of Cary Grant or Robert Mitchum. He's never been considered a Hollywood boy toy or sex symbol. Rather, he's an actor who will deliver a solid performance in a fine film then drink you under the table. Water Diviner not only highlights his acting chops but also his eye for a good shot. It's a beautiful film to watch and at times captures the essence of the older period pieces.
Now that we're at the time of year where we're going to be bombarded with explosions, CGI and in-theater cosplay, sometimes it's nice to take a moment and see something that has some artistry and passion behind it. The Water Diviner is a film that can help.
