No problem. I'm probably just going to skip it and move on to Chimes. #AspectRatioPurest Chimes is better (hopefully the aspect ratio is correct). Hopefully you do eventually catch up with Othello. It's solid too. Chimes is a later movie so the 16:9 is appropriate for it. I'll definitely catch up with Othello somehow some way.

I'm obsessed with them, never watch anything when it's in the wrong ratio. Been fighting this fight since the days of VHS. Film aficionados have let their guard down too much now that widescreen TVs are the norm. Rule of thumb, anything made before 1955 is almost certainly supposed to be in 1.37:1 99% of the time.

Tomorrow is the last night of TCM's Friday Night Spotlight on Orson Welles. For you Americans, you'll be getting The Third Man at 8:00 PM and Tomorrow is Forever at 10:00 PM, two films Welles did not direct but starred in. For us in Canada, instead of The Third Man we're getting The Tartars, which Welles also merely starred in. These films do sound interesting enough, but I think I'll pass for now. From my perspective, the Welles spotlight will be done when I finish my recordings of The Stranger, The Trial, and F for Fake.

I watched like 30 minutes of that Dr. Who movie with Peter Cushing and that was all I could handle. That's what I get for listening to PG Cooper and his over-praise of TCM.

Monday morning, TCM was highlighting Japanese cinema. I used the time to catch up on some Kurosawa, namely The Bad Sleep Well and Scandal. Scandal was okay. Toshiro Mifune sinks into his role well and it's fun to see Takashi Shimura really chew scenery, but the film is overly sentimental and manipulative. Kurosawa is usually able to achieve an emotional response through honest storytelling and his sheer power as a filmmaker. With Scandal, it's a lot more forcerd. The film had its moments, but the real treat was The Bad Sleep Well, which was really awesome. It's about a young man seeking vengeance on the corporation responsible for his father's death. The film is really well-made, with great performances, a strong story, and some very good scenes. It's also a really interesting social statement on corporate culture in Japan post-World War Two. I'd hesitate recommending this over Kurosawa's major classics, but if you've already seen the Seven Samurais and Rashomons of the world, this is a good place to go next.

Every August, TCM does their "Summer Under The Stars" line-up. Everyday of the month, a classic film star is highlighted as their movies are played for 24 hours, from 6:00 that morning to 6:00 the next morning. So far Gene Tierney, Olivia de Havilland, and Adolphe Menjou have been highlighted. I watched Tierney in Heaven Can Wait (1943). It's kind of interesting that the film be shown on her day and she be top-billed, and yet she gets totally overshadowed by the rest of the cast, particularly Don Ameche and Charles Coburn. Whatever, the movie made me laugh and was very fun so I'll call that a win. For Menjou, I watched Charlie Chaplin's A Woman of Paris which was...pretty fucking boring. Yeah, I was disappointed in this one. It's mostly well made, but the story is dull and the drama is very petty. I did like Menjou though. He plays a shallow rich guy, but he doesn't vilify the role the way a lot of films would. He actually seems like a pretty decent person. Shallow sure, but he isn't hurting anybody. So that was kind of neat I suppose.
Today, the focus is on Teresa Wright. I'll be recording 1941's The Little Foxes at 8:00 PM, but the real treat is the film playing immediately after; Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt. I've already seen the film and won't be rewatching it, but it's a really awesome film from one of cinema's masters. If you haven't seen it yet, you really should.
The rest of the stars this month from tomorrow on are: Fred Astaire, Michael Caine, Katharine Hepburn, Raymond Massey, Robert Walker, Joan Crawford, Rex Ingram, Robert Mitchum, Ann Margaret, Groucho Marx, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Patricia O'Neal, Lee J. Cobb, Vivien Leigh, John Wayne, Mae Clarke, Alan Arkin, Marlene Dietrich, Debbie Reynolds, Warren Oates, Virginia Bruce, Greta Garbo, Monty Wooley, Ingrid Bergman, George C. Scott, Gary Cooper, and Shelley Winters.

Tonight, TCM is playing Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Sweet Smell of Success, and North by Northwest all in a row, starting at eight. I haven't seen Sweet Smell and will be PVRing it, but I can confirm that the others are stone-cold classics. Should be a good night for anyone wanting to catch-up on some great movies.

Haven't seen Virginia Woolf, definitely need to. Sweet Smell of Success is incredible, it's known for the screenplay which is easily one of the best ever in terms of dialogue alone, but the cinematography shouldn't be overlooked either. Great, great movie.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is one of those really solid, highly regarded movies that I'll only watch one time.

I loved watching 31 Days of Oscars back in high school. I don't think I've watched any of it since then.

In a sad turn of events I no longer get TCM. It pained me but I realized I was basically paying for an entire tier of cable just for the one channel and given the multitude of other sources I have for movies I just couldn't justify it. If it was ever made available ala carte I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat.

Every Friday this month TCM has looked at the works of Billy Wilder. Most of the films shown have been major classics I'm already familiar with, but I did take the time to catch up with his first two Hollywood directed features; The Major and the Minor and Five Graves to Cairo. The former is a comedy about a woman who poses as a 12 year old girl for a travel discount and the latter is war-time thriller about a soldier and a French woman revisiting the Nazis in North Africa. Both were pretty solid movies and it's also interesting that Wilder started his directorial career bouncing between comedy and drama, something he would do with remarkable success throughout his career. Anyway, Five Graves to Cairo definitely shows Wilder's visual abilities growing, but I think his voice comes through stronger in The Major and the Minor. In any event, both films were fairly enjoyable and it was interesting to see how Wilder's initial directed efforts (not counting a mostly forgotten French film) panned out.

I think I've only seen three of his movies. Sunset Blvd is one of my favorites. Some Like It Hot is a great screwball comedy. But the Seven Year Itch is a piece of shit. I think that movie soured my Wilder experience and I haven't really sought his other films.

I'm with Dooms in that you should check out Double Indemnity, and I'd also recommend Ace in the Hole, Stalag 17, and The Apartment (my favourite of his work).
