A while ago, Nikki Finke (from Deadline.com), wondered how Facebook got a theatrical movie with top talents behind it while the story of Apple and Microsoft only got a TNT movie with Noah Wyle and Anthony Michael Hall. I have to ask the same question. Pirates of Silicon Valley, released in 1999, has a much better story since Steve Jobs is WAY more fascinating than geeky loser Mark Zuckerberg. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm NOT saying it's a better movie. Obviously, The Social Network is the champ since it has David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin behind it, but it can't be ignored that the story itself is really nothing special. It's pretty standard stuff. Like someone said earlier, you could replace the names with something else and it wouldn't make a difference. And that's the fundamental flaw with The Social Network. It's an interesting story NOW because Facebook is so relevant, but will the movie have an impact 10 years from now? Imagine if 5 years ago they had made a MySpace movie. Wouldn't we be laughing about it right now? Yeah, probably. So as good as The Social Network is, it's not the second-coming of Christ. Like Dracula, I'm gonna give this a 3.5 out of 4. And, guys, do yourself a favor and rent Pirates of Silicon Valley when you get a chance.

It's certainly right up there. I think my favorite Fincher scene is toward the end of Zodiac when Gyllenhaal and Ruffalo are sitting at the diner, and Gyllenhaal just finished outlining all of his research and finally convinces Ruffalo that Ruffalo's favorite suspect for the killings was probably guilty despite being ruled out. Two and a half hours of building toward a pretty big pay-off.
