The more important aspect to look at is it's average rating, which currently sits at 7.4.
Then again it's not really worth paying attention to in general until it gets closer to release. It only has 29 reviews so far. It's going to go back and forth quite a bit.

I think some early folks just like to be the contrarian. It'll be in the 80's by the time it's certified fresh.

He doesn't need to make a stinker in order to reevaluate and check himself as a filmmaker. Do you have Robert Rodriguez's El Rey Network on your cable package? He has a show where he interviews fellow directors and in his episode with Quentin Tarantino, Tarantino said that Death Proof flopping was the best thing that ever happened to him. Before Death Proof, he felt that he could do whatever he want and audiences would accept. He learned that wasn't true and now he's more conscience of the decisions he makes. So if Tarantino, who's arguably the most egotistical person in contemporary Hollywood, learned a major lesson from a flop, then I believe Christopher Nolan could use a flop as well. Like JBond said, I highly doubt that Interstellar will flop at the box office because of all the hype, but he's still a relatively young filmmaker with many more movies on the horizon. So don't worry, SnoBorder, his flop will eventually come. All the great directors have had flops. "Death Proof" or "Grindhouse" as a whole may have flopped commercially, but was met with very positive reviews. I mean that's a different entity anyways; Tarantino has really not toned down any of his trademarks of long-winded dialogue, shocking characters, long running times, etc. It's not like he put out a feature that was panned by critics and bombed commercially. I mean yeah, I'm sure Michael Cimino learned a lot from "Heaven's Gate" but it's not really the same thing here. Nolan will have a film that's not up to par (I think it's "The Prestige" but I'm in the minority there) eventually, but to say that a critically panned movie would progress him as a filmmaker moreso than continuing what he's doing doesn't make sense. So he could learn his lesson? What the hell would Nolan care about what critics or the public think of his movies at this point? What does he have to prove? Nothing, nothing at all. I can't comment on this movie yet because I haven't seen it, but when Nolan makes a stinker we'll know it and I don't think it's going to be this time around with "Interstellar".

"Death Proof" or "Grindhouse" as a whole may have flopped commercially, but was met with very positive reviews. Tarantino considers it a flop. Yeah, but he no longer makes tributes to old movies that no one cares about. Inglourious Basterds had a greater massage to tell than being a "homage" to a specific movie or movies. And Django Unchained, despite the title, was a crowd-pleasing story about a slave fighting back. It's the anti 12 Years a Slave. So he has learned that his movies need to be more than just a simple throwback.

Since when have his movies just been a throwback, I don't think anyone is criticizing "Pulp Fiction" for paying homage to classic cinema, in fact that's one of its many strengths. He's gotten better as a filmmaker but not because he's drastically changed or has seen "Death Proof" as this failed wakeup call. The movies you mentioned are littered with homages to other films, that was Tarantino's classroom and that won't ever change for him. I highly doubt he views his work as just simply throwbacks and tributes; they're multi-layered pieces that draw on conventions of cinema while flipping them inside out. "Death Proof" isn't a feature film, it's really not even fair to himself to criticize what he views are its shortcomings.

I don't think anyone is criticizing "Pulp Fiction" for paying homage to classic cinema But they do about Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, and especially, Death Proof. Pulp Fiction just got lucky because the anthology format made it interesting.

But all of those movies are good so if they're a really good movie that pays clever tribute to cinema what's to criticize?

Some interesting reviews...
- Dramatically awkward and visually ravishing -- often within the same sequence -- Interstellar is director Christopher Nolan's ninth and most ambitious film to date.
- The story is ever-ambitious, sometimes riveting and thought-provoking, but also plodding and hokey and not as visionary.
- A movie I snickered at more than once but never stopped staring at in wonder.

Hopefully once the review thread is created we have some discussions of what worked and what didn't.
Instead of just everyone giving it "Nolan is God" reviews...
