This isn't going to be good. Dre, Cube, and the Eazy-E estate are too involved and they're going to present a very self-serving narrative. I'd be shocked if this thing is going to show America's favorite headphones peddler beating up Dee Barnes. Also I see no reason the F. Gary Gray has the talent to not hit the biopic notes with a thud. It's going to be Notorious all over again.

I know he's a billionaire business man now, but anyone with Google can look up Dr. Dre's shady past. The same way that they can look up Jay-Z and any other rapper with a criminal past.

He wasn't in the same place ten years ago that he is now, also that was in a pre-Ray Rice/pre-internet outraged think piece world. Also there's a difference between oblique lyrical references and a dramatized scene in a movie. Anyway, I don't want to come accorss like I'm dying to see a woman get beat up in a movie, just saying that I have a strong hunch that this thing isn't going to have all the dirt in it.

That was in a pre-Ray Rice/pre-internet outraged think piece world. Guilty Conscience was a very controversial song. Everything Eminem did back then pissed people off. Except for Stan. People "love" Stan. But I understand what you mean. It predated social media, so it was easy to ignore all the outrage. Nowadays, Dr. Dre has to be more careful. There's only three criminal activities involving NWA. Drug dealing as the source to fund the group and Ruthless Records. Dr. Dre beating up Dee Barnes in the aftermath of Ice Cube leaving the group. And Dr. Dre using Suge Knight to get out of his contract and start Death Row Records. Of those three, I suspect it's Suge Knight that will get eliminated or the truth will be twisted. The fact that Suge Knight showed up on the set and killed someone is a good indicator that he's mad about something.

Eh, might make an ok download. You're from Georgia. Ludacris is your guy. I do enjoy Luda but I grew up on NWA, among others. The regular playlist in our bedroom was NWA, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, 2 Live Crew, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, etc etc. I got selective on rap when I got in my late teens. Narrowed my playlist favorites down. Grew out of the "gangsta" stuff. Ludacris was in fact a breath of fresh air to a very stale scene. I remember hearing Ho on the radio and heading straight to the mall and buying Back for the First Time on CD. U Got a Problem was probably my favorite off that, still play it from time to time. Anyway, I grew up in a very ghetto part of town and when NWA hit, Albany was the "Murder Capitol of the U.S." so the music fit in nicely with what was going on in our neighborhoods at the time. As far as the movie goes though, it will not be true to what really went down, just a glamorized version of events that Dre and Cube would like us to believe so they can make a quick buck, movie looks like crap with the exception of Giamatti but after seeing him in Spiderman, I do not have as much faith in his script selection.

The fact that Suge Knight showed up on the set and killed someone is a good indicator that he's mad about something. My guess is that they're going to throw Suge Knight under the bus and make him solely responsible for everything that went wrong while making Dre, Cube, and even Easy out to be naive idiots who got manipulated by him and Jerry Heller. Knight has been something of a patsy for every less than savory thing that happened in hip-hop from 1991 to 1997, perhaps not without reason, but still.

Grew out of the "gangsta" stuff. Gangsta Rap died with Biggie and 2Pac. Ice-T has played a cop on Law & Order for 15 years. The irony is more sad than amusing. Dracula compared this movie to Notorious. He's probably right but the timing for Straight Outta Compton is WAY better. The clip before the trailer, with Dre and Cube driving around Compton, mentioned Ferguson. And the trailer shows clips of the Rodney King beating. I think this movie, with the right marketing campaign, could spark a resurrection of the genre in the mainstream. That Common/John Legend song from Selma is too sappy. People are angry and NWA is the perfect soundtrack for everything that's going on.

Nepotism with Cube's kid. No thanks. We bitch about Will Smith trying to create a dynasty... I see no reason not to complain about Cube and this too.

Dj Jazzy Jeff was at the DJ competition I was at recently as a judge.
I'd like to hear a set from him though, bet he still can get the crowd moving.

If MC Ren wanted people to care about him he should have done more with his solo career.

Were MC Ren and Dj Yella really that important? MC Ren and Ice Cube were the main lyricists in the group. DJ Yella? It's hard to say. There's definitely a different sound between NWA and Dr. Dre's solo career. If MC Ren wanted people to care about him he should have done more with his solo career. Isn't he doing porn now... or is that Yella?

Is there an original song in this movie? We could have gotten the third - or third and a half - rap song to win an Oscar. Dre and Cube don't care about music anymore. Bastards. They did just announce that there's going to be a soundtrack with original music by Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar. Not clear how much (if any) of it will be in the actual movie or if any of it will be eligible for an Oscar. Even if any of it is, I have a hunch that most of it will be lame B-sides from the Detox sessions, and it won't help that it's being attached to a movie that doesn't look very promising. www.rollingstone.com/music/news/dr-dre-to-release-new-album-as-straight-outta-compton-soundtrack-20150729
