I have a suspicion that Jibbs won't do a Nova Award for 2014. Edge of Tomorrow is on HBO, if anyone cares. I know some people, like John , criticized it for being "Groundhog Day: The Video Game" but it's a great action movie and one of the standouts from summer 2014.

I haven't even seen it. I based that criticism on the commercial spots and trailers.

You closed the book on 2014 too quickly.

Why wouldn't I do the Novas? Expect it within the next couple weeks.

Edge of Tomorrow markets itself as an action/sci-fi/war/mystery suspense movie rolled into one. Usually movies that sound this muddled turn out to be duds however this blends all factors into one naturally.
Tom Cruise is Will Cage, a Major who finds himself on the front lines of an alien war after being demoted. After getting some alien blood on him he finds himself in a time loop reliving the same day again and again, however each day brings a new opportunity to find a way to win the war. Unlike some, I enjoy Tom Cruise movies. They’re fun, exciting, and it’s tough for the guy to make a really bad film. Even in movies like Eyes Wide Shut which on paper seem to be out of his wheelhouse he delivers the goods. Even though his role in Edge of Tomorrow didn’t require the skills of a classically trained thespian he still made it his own. Granted, the movie does have some missteps and holes, like Major Cage stating how thousands of soldiers enlisted thanks to him yet nobody recognizes him once demoted and sent to training, but these don’t hamper the solid action that makes up much of the film.
Edge of Tomorrow is a solid, entertaining movie that keeps things moving right along up until the climax. It was disappointing to see the movie end in such a forced Hollywood rose petal ending that it didn’t really warrant, however the suspense and ideas behind it, albeit not wholly original, were fun to watch throughout.
B+ so says Doomsday

The ending is certainly the worst part of the movie, but it doesn't completely detract from the whole.

This was probably the best scifi film of last year as far as I'm concerned.

I made it embarrassingly far into Oblivion (we watched it on DVD with bf's family) before I finally realized that I was watching a different movie. I kept wondering when the "groundhog day in space" part was supposed to start happening.
Oblivion was pretty good.
That's my contribution to this discussion. Sorry

Yeah, didn't the title at the beginning of Oblivion give it away? Or did you not see that part?

Yeah, didn't the title at the beginning of Oblivion give it away? Or did you not see that part? The title didn't really mean much to me. I'm sure if I hadn't watched one of the movies and you asked me which plot belonged to which title I wouldn't be able to tell you the difference. Hell, even after watching I still think of the plot for After Earth when I hear the title for Oblivion. I'm old and easily confused, I guess.
